At the beginning of the 90s a new music wave was emerging in Italy. Influenced by stylistic elements and sound expressions arriving from abroad - in particular from those english and american labels – it has created the bases for an innovative sound destined to leave its mark for generations to come. It was a sound close to the Deep House atmospheres coming from Chicago, Detroit and New York. A sound made of powerful basslines, punching drum machines, dreamy melodies and incredibly sensuous vibrations.
Dream House, Italo House, Piano House are names often used to identify this new scene, but it could be simply summed up in one word: "Underground". 
Inspired by an innate sense of freedom and experimentation, a generation of Italian DJs and producers envision the sound of the future. The music becomes a muse, enchanting and unifying. The movement fires up  in the clubs. The record shops act as a sounding board. And the alignment of all the planets generates an invasion of celestial bodies.

"Ciao Italia” wants to be a tribute to the artists that wrote this story. Artists that were forced to use many different aliases that often even themselves have forgotten and certainly less celebrated than their colleagues today.

(Heartbeat Records), passing through the productions of Alex Neri and Marco Baroni (formerly Kamasutra, Green Baize, Agua Re up to becoming Planet Funk) for Palmares, up to Don Carlos and Stefano Tirone (together Montego Bay Experience) Francesco Montefiori (aka Key Tronics Ensemble and Soft House Company) and Claudio “Moz-Art Rispoli (Jestofunk and Omniverse) on Irma and Antima Records, Leo Mas, Rago and Farina, MBG, Paolino Bova, Gianni Bini and Paolo Martini, up to names that have remained more in the shadows but have given great lymph and depth to music Made in Italy such as Leo Anibaldi , Andrea Benedetti and Eugenio Vatta (Frame), Leandro Papa (Last Rhythm e Stonehenge), Cesare Cerulli and Toni Verde (Blue Zone), Graziano Ragni (High Tide), Massimo Berardi (Underground Nation Undertour Sensation and Cosmic Galaxy) and Massimo Zennaro and all those producers that we were not able to include in this collection because of the lack of space.

A rhythmic journey to rediscover what has been, what continues to be and what will be, “Ciao Italia” tells a story that still sounds incredibly current, whose reverberations continue to be the object of veneration among DJs, clubbers and music lovers of new generations. As confirmed by the new productions ideally inspired by the iconic sound of the time, testimony of an Italian avant-garde alive and vivid not only in memories but more than ever in the here and now.
Not only a "musical style", but also a way of approaching reality characterized by enthusiasm, a global vision and a spirit suited to the most eclectic and boundless creativity. 

Born from an idea of Daniele "Shield" Contrini, with the art direction of Stupefacente Studio, the project took shape in a double vinyl format with an insert, signed by the journalist Elia Zupelli, which reconstructs an era through the voices of the protagonists, photographs, interviews, rarities and dazzles from the 
dancefloors. So, while the vinyl slides under the needle, the hope is to be able to grasp the atmosphere and live it again for a few moments, clinging to the indomitable charm of  the "underground" grooves: a mnemonic flow from the past and a driving force for a new course projected into the future.

Kruder & Dorfmeister - DISTRIKT - Burning Man 2023

Brooklynite Elizabeth Harper’s first musical offerings appeared in the form of personal singer/songwriter fareher airy vocals paired only with quiet strums of acoustic guitar. But having a long-held desire to make electronic music, Harper recruited producers Mark Richardson and Scott Rosenthal to assist in achieving her desired sound, and electro-pop outfit Class Actress was born. The trio wasted no time in assembling their Journal of Ardency EP, which Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor released on his Terrible Records imprint in early 2010. The five songs circulated widely, garnering acclaim and comparisons to Human League, Depeche Mode, and early Madonna at each music journal stop.

Now settled in with the folks at Carpark, Harper and co. put forth their debut long-player, Rapprocher. The album sees her playing a similar part to Journal’s playful lovelorn diva, but it pushes the EP’s proto-electro revisionism into new directions. Tracks like "Love Me Like You Used To" and "Hanging On" swaddle the record’s heavy disco beats in diaphanous sheets of delay, and the bouncing bass of "Weekend" make it a prime candidate for a feel-good summer hit.

Harper remains the force that binds the songs into a cohesive statement, her winking coo darting about in the deep drums and lofty arpeggios, and her passion – backed mostly with electronics– summons thoughts of Yaz’s Alison Moyet. In concurrence with the title ("rapprocher"is French for "bring closer"), the candid, sincere lyrics meld with the atmosphere, enveloping the listener into Class Actress’s world of 21st century romanticism.

Just now Dunkelbunt has come out with  the first ever official remix of Yali, Yali/ Çayelinden Öteye – a Black Sea love song by Turkish arabesk queen Neşe Karaböcek. Deeply groovy mood, veers off from Karaböcek’s trusted arabesk and Türk Sanat territory, entering the twilight zone of Anatolian psyche. Dunkelbunt puts his own dazzling spin to this deeply atmospheric track. Two decades. Twenty years. Twenty compilations. Over 400 tracks. Over two days of total playing time and countless coloured dots. If someone would have told us in 1999, when we put together TOTAL 1 that this would turn into one of the longest standing compilation series in techno world we would have laughed out loud. But here we are – in the year 2020 which will probably go down in history as the most difficult period ever for club culture. But we won’t stop doing what we’re doing. Music is our oxygen. We’ll dance together soon again.

The TOTAL series has always been like KOMPAKT’s yearbook and to say it with the late Frank Sinatra: It was a very good year. Our family of artists delivered a strong heterogeneous mix of uplifting sounds, from the lush reveries of ROBAG WRUHME and SOELA to the stark primetime bangers of MARC ROMBOY or ANNA & KITTIN and everything in between. Notable new entries to our crew are the Londoner KIWI with his wonderfully careless “Hello Echo” that picks up the camp disco vibes Justus Köhncke made a staple in our repertoire.
