The Tantrum Desire brand is most associated with the kind of epic  productions that have seen drum and bass become a mainstay of the mainstream. True heads, though, will know that there’s always been an undercurrent of genre-twisting experimentalism present, which came to the fore on last year’s huge album Diversified. So, which corners are explored on this EP?

Nationwide Rocker opens in a dark and techy landscape. Reverberating stabs underpinned by the insistent buzz of low end strikes suggest we’re building into a display of neurofunk technique. And then we’re dropped into something that isn’t quite categorisable. It’s hard, dancefloor music, built from a stripped-back rhythm sequence and a succession of expertly-twisted basses. This is the collision of raw, visceral energy with that trademark Tantrum Desire slick production science.

Then Airhead takes us somewhere different. With a funky techstep call and response pattern, this is an instant dancefloor bubbler. And there’s an eighties electro sensibility woven into the stabs and synth-effects which makes this feel like it could be a 2016 rework of a forgotten crate-dug classic. It’s minimal and focussed but, as you’d expect from Tantrum Desire, it refuses to let the temperature drop, with precision-crafted builds to keep attention gripped on the bass-and-mid interplay right to the finish.

You won’t be prepared for what Think About You has to offer. A bleeps-and-pads hands-in-the-air hardcore intro drops into some triplet-time rave workout material. We’re treated to mid-range grind resolving into luxuriant sweeping tones over a skippy 6/8 time-signature. But ravers and MCs better not get too comfortable, as a “Switch it up” sample signals a slam into 4/4 time. Then the breakdown cools things off ready to go back in with the madness once again.If you didn’t know about Tantrum Desire’s versatility then you should have been paying closer attention. Don’t worry, though, because this EP is a perfect representation of the serpentine rule-bending contained within the sound. It’s all dancefloor music, but beyond that, anything’s possible

Next up, Anarchist appropriates the tropes of nineties hip-hop-influenced jump-up to give the sound a modernist renaissance. Rather than using a rap sample, Rhymestar is enlisted to provide the lyrical punch. His bars roll out over the half-time intro, and then peppered throughout as vocoded motifs to confirm that old skool vibe. There’s nothing old skool about the production levels, though, as the icicle-sharp drums and honey-and-lemon bassline drive the rave onwards.

Jaded - Bomba

With the huge success of their All or Nothing LP laying in the backdrop, Calyx & Teebee are about to take the title place yet again and with the full throttle forces of pounding basslines and meticulously constructed mechanics. But what else could you expect from two revered veterans of the genre, whose joint muscle has telescoped the competition in comparison. 

However, it’s not just their duteous workmanship and forty years of experience that makes their forthcoming ‘1x1’ album so undeniably huge. In tracks like ‘Nothing Left’ Larry Cons’ vocals lead you by the hand into all-out anarchy. Revving between each break, your picked up and dropped by verbal crescendos. Angry, yet innovative and impressively intricate, Calyx & Teebee have raised expectations even higher. 

And then comes ‘Stray Bullet’, a minefield of drum patterns and wavering note arpeggios. A steppy riddim, which completely envelops the senses, each segment explodes on impact. Sliced and diced by invasive samples, you’re unable to resist; plunging you deep into the mix, the slowly building drop pushes you into a freefall of plucky subs and jittering percussion. 

‘Ghetto’ rolls out as another new number, again featuring the vocal talents of Doctor; it’s a gritty, sharp and pumping with shaking subs; a conundrum of hi-hats and aggressive drum patterns. Pounding pads take you towards a colossal break, juxtaposing perfectly against the LPs softer touches. 

Having already hit the number one spot on the Beatport drum & bass chart with both singles ‘A Day That Never Comes’, ‘Long Gone’ and ‘Cloud 9’, it’s quite clear to see why the anticipation is almost unbearable. Also including the infamous collaboration with Doctor on ‘Where We Go’, brand new, female-lead vocal ‘track ‘The Fall’, half-time switch up ‘False Alarm’ as well as even more material to be unleashed, this LP will catapult you head first into their greatest output yet.

Playing some of the world’s biggest stages, including EDC, London’s SW4, Ram’s seminal NYE event and UKF’s Sea Dance Festival, expect another one of music’s most prominent seasons filled with new music from Calyx & Teebee. ‘1X1’ is set to make history, which isn’t surprising after hitting millions of streams with their previous singles and detonating dancefloors globally.

TECH 143 – Tantrum Desire – Repeat feat. Coppa (Document One Remix)

Tantrum Desire's 2015 debut album “Diversified” demonstrated the sheer range and depth of music that the TD studio was capable of delivering. With tunes as varied as the gigantic “I Need You Here”, the aggressively percussive “Pump” and the classically lo-fi “Back for Love”, this LP reflected almost every flavour that D&B has to offer.

The project isn't over yet, though. Now, we're being treated to a series of remixes to offer even more twists to the formula. For this instalment, the Document One boys have dissected and reconfigured the Coppa-laced “Repeat”.

The elements of this tune suit Document One's jazzfunk-hip-hop approach to D&B perfectly. A darkly atmospheric intro drops into Coppa's vocals backed by a subtle half-speed beat. We get a moment to get used to nodding our heads to this before things are twisted into hyper-rave-mode with synth-stabs signalling it's time to get set.

Then the grimy warp of the bassline hits, with Document One's signature popping drums and funk energy. Coppa's bars ride over the top, providing extra boosts of percussive energy to keep the dancefloor bubbling. And the old skool breakdown and big build into the second drop means that this is more than just a simple roller, it's got the weight and power to do serious damage in the rave.

This is only round two of the “Diversified” remix series, and already it's clear that there's way more to explore in the Tantrum Desire sound. And with the kind of talent that Technique have on the roster for relick duties, we should expect nothing but fireworks.

As we draw closer to the release of one of the most eagerly anticipated debut albums of the year, Viper Recordings’ own InsideInfo gears up to drop second single, ‘Glimpse’ from his upcoming self-titled ‘InsideInfo LP’.

The ‘InsideInfo LP’ shares an insight in to the musical history of the renowned artist, delving in to his melodic influences and highlighting some of the key turning points which helped define his own production style. Through his love of electronic duo Orbital, InsideInfo discovered an incredible English vocalist, Fable to collaborate with, who is known for her stellar work with Archive and Orbital’s own Paul Hartnoll.

The combination worked like a dream with Fable’s vocals elevating ‘Glimpse’ – which is otherworldly in its composition – into a powerful journey through some of the ethereal soundscapes and driving electronic force which are paramount to the musical roots of both artists alike.

The release then went full circle with Paul Hartnoll hearing the track and exclusively remixing it classic Orbital fashion.

With the release of the ‘InsideInfo LP’ imminent, ‘Glimpse (feat. Fable)’ is another taste of an album demonstrating a vast range of musical complexity and diversity.  Fans can expect features from all ends of the musical spectrum, including the UK metal band Bleed Within’s Scott Kennedy, electronic vocalist Tasha Baxter, renowned MC’s Jakes and Miss Trouble, right through to one of the world’s most celebrated tabla players, Aref Durvesh. Pulling out all the stops, InsideInfo’s first album shares a glimpse into a whole new world of sound in such a way that only his creative genius can imagine.
