Rooted in those rare moments of tranquility throughout a parent’s life, Early Color is the auditory memoir of Griff through his time as a stay-at-home dad to a growing toddler making sense of the world. Conceptually, the album is laid out as a natural progression starting with the beautiful field recordings of ‘Zoom Deck’ and warm melody of ‘Hemmed’, both evoking visions of a hazy, forest morning, slowly waking up after night’s embrace. Shaking off the slumber, ‘Steel Wool’ provides an energetic start to the day as most children tend to do, to the dismay of some parents. Followed by the understated grooves of ‘Bubby & the Submersible’.

Approaching the second half of the album, ‘Trace Fossil’ and ‘Atoll’ kick things into gear with ear-worm-like melodies that build and build throughout into an emotional trip, while ‘FGH’ brings a more melancholic take. Capping off the string of four on the floor tracks is the growling ‘Why Yellow’, a more serious number that would fit well in many a dj set. Alighting from the burst of energy, we have the breakish beats of ‘Resnooze’, whose warm bass-lines and wide ranging synths envelop the listener. Finally arriving at the last track, the aptly named ‘Sitting Quietly Looking at Things’ is a musical combination of all that was prior. Emotive, textured, impactful, as the spoken word sampled lends such an air to the track.

Early Color’s artwork was also created by Griff, through a series of layered scans and is evocative of both his music, and the visual direction of Never Late. As a collection of personal moments, sounds, experiences will be key to future releases, as we strive to find the best expression of each artist that we work with.

@caldera-caldera is an artist whose productions have had me in awe for ages. German but living in Brighton, UK, he runs a monthly radioshow on 1BTN. Caldera's sense of rhythms, texture & the overall hypnotic & dubby sides of techno is something I’ve always been super inspired by. His Leafs EP released back in 2020 is a must-listen (bokharirecords.bandcamp.com/album/leafs). @adam-stromstedt is a Swedish producer, growing up in Stockholm, but currently residing in Sydney, Australia. He runs a label called @lyssna-records alongside fellow Swedish producer Flord King (lyssnarecords.bandcamp.com). They have such an awesome catalog of really tasteful & insanely groovy house on the deeper side. Adam has been running a regular radioshow in Sydney throughout the entire pandemic called @always-sometimes. He was nice enough to have me on the show twice for guestmixes & the show became my regular evening cooking / wind down soundtrack during the week for the last year or so. They just had their 50th & final Orbital Radio episode earlier this month (all episodes can be found here: soundcloud.com/always-sometimes). His music is incredibly meditative & groovy with so much thought & care put into sound choice, rhythm, witty vocal samples, etc. He has these extremely punchy, clean & crisp mixdowns that I've envied since first hearing his Redfern EP back in 2019. Icelandic producer @jonbjorn is the cofounder of Reykjavík-based record label, @lagaffe-tales. I met Jónbjörn in Berlin a few years back & we've stayed in touch since. He & his label-mate Viktor Birgliss have done an amazing job curating a fantastic catalog of music that to me has always true to the roots of electronic music while also having a uniquely Icelandic tone which is accompanied by Jónbjörn's own, otherworldly artwork designs. Jónbjörn's music to me sounds like the geologic activity in his backyard - techno & electro that is raw & full of tension, crafted for those early morning hours in a sweaty warehouse party or a HÖR livestream. You’ll get the idea rigth away when you hear his latest BROT 4 EP: jonbjorn.bandcamp.com/album/brot-04. His label has releases from him as well as many other artists from Iceland & around the world spanning all the way back to 2012 & you can really hear how their tastes changed & developed over the last 10 years: lagaffetales.bandcamp.com

Argentinian producer @forestonstasys is a prolific artist in the techno scene with releases on labels including Harmony Records & Lowless. He also runs his own label with two fellow Argentinians called @danza-nativa (danzanativa.bandcamp.com) which focuses on showcasing a unique style of mesmerizing ambient techno. Forest On Stasys’ music is deep, hypnotic & sonically sublime. A lot of his tracks have a very tribal feel to them with tight rhythms made up of toms & bongos, field recordings & enchanting vocals. His music puts you into a trance & takes you to some outdoor dancefloor in the middle of the jungle. I highly recommend diving into his Mantrum EP on Harmony: harmonyrec.bandcamp.com/album/mantrum

Close your eyes, take a deep breath & allow your mind to bring you on a journey to a far away land. When your eyes open, you appear inside of a lush yet strangely digital landscape, billions of years into the past where the planet is overflowing with a myriad of the most unusual plants & animals. You find yourself comforted by the natural serenity of it all, the lack of human influence on the world around you. Submerged in the depths of cool, dense, mysterious jungles, interrupted only by the occasional river snaking through the trees. You trek across the most vivid of green mountains & through deep valleys that are peppered with crystal clear blue waters from the melted glaciers of a past ice age. It’s just the slightest bit familiar yet there is not a human in sight. A delicate shimmering coats the surface of everything you see. It’s as if you are in a dreamlike, artificial state of consciousness. This is the world of Tensen Park’s ‘Jurassimo’.

The Amsterdam-based producer takes you on an introspective ride through 4 dubby, ambient & IDM-adjacent tracks, each with a cool wash of crispy effervescence & crystalline ear candy. The music is full of so much beautiful detail which sounds as if it was performed in an improvisational manner. There is a meticulousness & attention to detail that is heard throughout yet everything somehow sounds unpretentious & flows naturally. The EP closes with a 5th track which is a wonderfully crunchy & upbeat rework from friend & occasional collaborator lmnop.
