'Assemblage' - a study of reconstructing analog formats in the digital realm. The track is composed of 36 individual 1/4" tape loops created on an Akai reel-to-reel. The video is animated from 1000 frames of 35mm film, shot using a Lomography 'Lomokino' camera. Physical editing was applied to both formats before digital reassembly. Sonic and visual artifacts have been preserved to highlight the process.

Assemblage

Reflects on the increased distance between individuals due to social distancing and travel restrictions. Includes field recordings from my parents’ home in Sydney & fragments from the essays ‘On going a journey’ and ‘Why distant objects please’ from William Hazlitt’s Table-Talk.

The Assignment: Use probability to remove material from a track.

I made a 3 track piece specifically for this idea instead of using something I already had because I figured it should be done with tracks that always have something happening so the silence is more noticeable/dramatic.  I think the moments where everything cuts out are the most dramatic.  Silence is sort of the 4th track in that sense (or what ever is going on around you when listening).  The piece itself used a fair bit of aleatory.  "Dr Chaos" is a max for live instrument I used with the drum kit.  It plays random samples at a regular beat division (1/8th, 1/16th, etc.). The 2 other tracks are just moving through different interval cycles (minor 3rds and perfect 4ths) at different paces so they create different unpredictable harmonies.  I used Random.org to decide where to cut and how long the cut should be (1-8 beats).  I figured cutting on beats instead of seconds would give the breaks a rhythmic quality.

My linux won't boot so I'm presently forced to use Windows, and because of the bug in Soundcloud's system my account is all messed up when I don't use a VPN to connect which I am unable to do now... trying to get help from my VPN provider.  Because of this, and because I started working very long days I will be less present here.  Sorry, I'm trying.

Ever since the closing of this account by error by SC two or three months ago, this problem has remained unfixed.  Soundcloud and their AI are apparently still working on solving this and other problems with this account, and with my other account ; )

What I wrote below was heart felt but presumptuous and pretentious.  I would have to not be stupid myself to be allowed to claim such a thing.  More importantly though, I don't believe it is correct or accurate.  These people are probably not stupid but just don't care.  Justice is a collective thing and many if not most people seem to live in bubbles.  It is perhaps economic oppression which is responsible, they just don't have the resources, the time, the energy to be concerned about what lies behond that bubble.  It used to be fine but there's this thing they call globalization which makes this increasingly impractical or impossible.

mid January 2024:
Justice and vengeance are not the same.  Apparently most people are too stupid to see the difference.  Unfortunately it is not something unique to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and not unique to group conflicts.

What happened to intelligence?  Aren't we supposed to be the "intelligent" specie.
