We caught up with @sleeperhold-publications head honcho Ward Heirwegh to discuss the makings of @patriciaaa brand new 'Autotomy' EP. We also discuss the publication's raison d'être, creative cross-pollination and further plans for the future.

I made this music way back in 1995 when i was finishing high school .
My good friend Dean Henning . AKA = Captain Asthma  helped me with programming some of the beats as Dean was our main drummer in Both our high school bands "Incurable" and "Fingerhead" .
I had at this stage in my life a KORG X3 Workstation Keyboard ( Thanks to my dear parents and Babs Naidoo Music in Pietermaritzburg )

At this stage in my life i was obsessed with early 80s electro music ............. bands such as Grauzone , No more , D.A.F , Joachim whitt , O.M.D , Front 242 , Kraftwerk .................... this type thing .
Of course at this point in time in South Africa ( One year into our new Democracy ) Most people where not listening to this type music .
Dean and I attempted to Record a Second Unit album in Pietermaritzburg , in a studio with our friend Gavin .
The music was recorded straight from my Korg onto DAT tape and the vocals and bass guitar where recorded separately.
Unfortunately our DAT tape was corrupt and the recording was a disaster .
Somehow Dean came into possession of a recording made onto cassette tape ................... and this is the only recording of Second Unit in existence .
This music was very personal to me when i made it

The 17th release on microCastle sees the always on form duo of Monaque with their first EP for the label. This follows a strong run of releases for the Russian pair which included the Jack Rose EP on Renaissance and their remixes of Lank's 'Run On Fumes' and Tonnsaied & Mario Kahn's 'Voided' . The Dos3000 EP contains 2 original tracks; 'Dos3000' and 'Resolutions' which have been receiving heavy play from many of the world's top DJs in recent months with Hernan Cattaneo leading the charge.  Spooky and Quivver who  are two of electronic music's most legendary and storied artists have been called upon to remix the EP. The Dos3000 original mix is driven by a tough techno groove which is complimented by some devastatingly dark electronics and a simple yet extremely effective lead which all makes for a peak time main room bomb. Fresh off his Yeah Yeah EP for Bedrock Quivver reworks Dos3000 into a dark and twisted dancefloor killer. The unmistakeable trademark Quivver groove is certainly evident and the overall heads down vibe and spirit of the original is maintained. Added vocal elements, seriously fresh sounds and a keen dancefloor sensibility make for another outstanding production from Quivver.

On the Resolutions original Monaque have really come up with a timeless classic. This piece has an undeniable positive vibe and great club energy about it. With with one of the most unique and memorable melodic leads of the year  Resolutions is awe inspiring and unquestionably  profound. There are very few artists who can claim to be true pioneers of electronic music; with Spooky however the claim is absolutely legitimate.  Their debut album ‘Gargantuan' on William Orbit's Guerilla Records will forever be regarded as one of the defining albums in the history of modern dance music. That along with remixing Depeche Mode and producing the ‘Involver' projects alongside Sasha;  Duncan Forbes and Charlie May have been at the forefront of electronic music their entire careers. On Resolutions Spooky have delivered a stunning interpretation, the foundation is built on a grinding techy groove that will shred up even the most discerning of dancefloors.  As more elements are added into the mix there is a constant building tension as the droning leads and panning electronics escalate in potency. The end result is nothing short of remarkable and should make for some of the most memorable dancefloor moments of the year. Forthcoming Charlie May productions to lookout for include a collaboration with Barry Jamieson which will be released this summer with remixes from Dimitri Nakov and Sasha. Also on the gig front Spooky and Charlie May will be playing at Glastonbury this year and Spooky will be playing alongside Booka Shade at Space Ibiza for 15 years of DJ Mag Ibiza

Though well respected and accomplished producers in their own right, together Danny 'Legowelt' Wolfers and Brian 'Orgue Electronique' Schijf really make the girls go wild. Their Chicago Shags project is one that has released on Creme Organization, Bunker and Strange Life Records, forever mining increasingly exciting house depths since 2005. Now they return with The Family Album on the ever-excellent MOS Recordings.

The four track EP starts with 'Ponderosa'; a forward looking, cosmic surfing house cut wired with plenty of smooth electronics and pure jacking energy, before 'Pancake Breakfast' glistens and glints just as much with its firefly synth lines, gurgling baseline and sweet, pixelated melodies. 

‘Firetruck Sunday’ is more dense and edgy, never resting in one place for more than a single beat, with chattery drums and claps offset by a rounded, smoothed but acidy bassline. Finally, ‘To The Westfield’ surges and soars through more sci-fi universes as a house groove busies itself below. 

Four tracks of heavily analogue house for the most knowing of dancefloors, then, as is always the case with this pair!

A collaboration between acclaimed techno producer/DJ Oliver Ho (aka. Raudive) and vocalist/artist Zizi Kanaan, The Eyes in The Heat are set to release their electrifying debut album, ‘Program Me’, on Paris-based independent label Kill The DJ on the 1st October.

A lithe, magnificent beast of an album, ‘Program Me’ features twelve stunning tracks that range from rapturous, space-age euphoria to a sound that hints at something much more melancholy, dark and fragmented. The album also includes the title track from their previous EP, the sleazily hypnotic ‘Amateur’, which was released earlier this year to glowing reviews.

Produced by Ho, ‘Program Me’ – or, alternatively, ‘Programme’, as the deliberately ambiguous title can also be read – explores the borders between the avant-garde pop of Laurie Anderson and the electronic experimentalism of Brian Eno. Standout tracks include the electro-Western balladry of ‘Stare’, the Fever Rey-esque ‘The Upper Limits’, and the woozy tropicalia of forthcoming single ‘Florida’, the band’s most personal track, where Zizi explores her Lebanese and American childhood, the psychological blend of memory and imagination. Indeed, the main themes of the album are those to do with human psychology, artifice, and fantasy. This is not a band to shy away from incorporating big ideas or artistic concepts – from the band’s name, a reference to a Jackson Pollock painting, to a song such as literature- referencing ‘Good Morning, Midnight’. But there are also plenty of hot-blooded danceable moments - from the lush alt-disco of ‘Think in Loops’, to ‘The Perfect Gun’, the band’s techno-psychedelic deconstruction of  ‘Dali’s Handgun’, originally written by cult rapper MC 900 ft Jesus, which caused stupendous reactions when played recently on Ivan Smagghe’s renowned ‘Beats in Space’ radioshow.

Based in London, The Eyes in The Heat formed in 2010 as a duo, playing gigs in London, Paris, and Berlin. The line-up now consists of Zizi Kanaan (vocals, synths), Oliver Ho (guitar, machines, programming), and Jerome Tcherneyan (drums).

‘Program Me’ features new artwork from celebrated British artist Tom Dale: a series of esoteric photo collages that responds to the album’s sense of fragmented, psychological reverie.


The Eyes in The Heat will play London’s Hysteria Bar in Dalston on the 4th October.

Sawlin's debut EP on Delsin off shoot Ann Aimee went down so well it only made sense to have him craft another. 'Eviment' is that EP, made up of three more deep and subterranean techno cuts that play with plenty of textures.

Title track 'Eviment' is a tortured and paranoid offering that has a nagging vocal stretched out over splashy claps and a foreboding bottom end thud. It's vast and dark, spare and haunting where 'Kretze' is a bigger and bolder track. The analogue percussion and serrated lines all sound old and aged as they mark out a scraping, dystopian vision of a world well away from here.

'Sour Tear' has a more syncopated, techno-funk groove but is still padded out with plenty of dubby undercurrents. Sawlin's percussion sounds are wholly non standard, from clanking metal to twanging strings, everything sounds like a real world sound, which makes his music as arresting as anyone's, despite being made firmly for the techno backroom.
