For the 119th entry in the Honcho Podcast Series, we welcome @boxofbox!  I think many would agree that Jonathon is one of the sweetest and most supportive people in the scene. On top of being a wonderful human being, he's always an extremely talented DJ. 

Before our scheduled programing, @boxofbox has a few words to say about his mix and some lost Honcho tea:

'Fresh off the 10th Anniversary of Honcho @ Hot Mass, we are finally beyond the statute of limitations and can share with you the real story. Honcho’s origins actually harken back 20 years ago, when a then fresh-faced Michael Moraine assembled a specialized crew of ne’er do wells to execute a simultaneously coordinated heist of 7 distinct gambling venues across the US. The Honch, as they were known back then, have been on the run for the past 20 years, but now are able to tell their story. Michael, a.k.a. Don Sweetums, led the operation, running point from his swank Pittsburgh riverside cabana. The primary team included, Aaron “The Disaster” Clark, the munitions expert, George “Fun Cooker” d’Adhemar, the reputable bag man, and Clark “Sugar Caddy” Price, the wheels. The boys hired a novice hacker, known only as boxofbox to run comms. The mix you are listening to was the operation-coordinating soundtrack box played during the heist. A number of additional accomplices have asked to remain anonymous, but you can likely find them on the Hot Mass dancefloor as part of their mandated community service.

This mix is dedicated to the long lost 5th member of the Honcho crew, who during reconnaissance at the Orleans casino, fell into the alligator tank. RIP Jo Crystal.'

On Sunday (27 Aug 2023), climate activists blocked the road to Burning Man, demanding that the festival—which was founded on principles of decommodification, radical self-reliance, and civic responsibility—ban single-use plastics and private jets. While the protest delayed a relatively small amount of physical traffic for less than an hour, it seized  swathes of the online space for days given the action's adjacency to so many memetic themes, incl.: #climate, #collapse, #decarbonization, #privilege, #indigenous (land), #police and ofc the punching bag that is #burningman. 

Much of the initial drama played out on the Instagram and X accounts of gonzo journalist Michelle Lhooq (Rave New World) who broke the story while on assignment for The Guardian. On Monday, Michelle joined New Models from Reno to discuss what she witnessed as well as the changing nature of activism’s stage both online and off.

approaching this mix i wanted to grapple with the ineffable emotions i experienced playing and being part of the dancefloor. as the seasons evolve this collection of songs have been my expression of where i have been and where i am going. i channel a magnitude of emotions that are impossible to explain with words. the tracks included are laced with memory, reflecting on love, time spent in nature and with friends, travels overseas, all stitched together amalgamating into an ode to the fading summer sun.

Recording number three comes from back in early June, when resident DJ Physical Therapy got things going before DJ Lag and Total Freedom turned the place upside down and inside out.

The importance of the opening slot in the arc of a good party is often overlooked but like the pro that he is, the Allergy Season boss veered toward the outer edges of his record collection for tempos, textures and grooves that would set the stage for what was coming afterward.

The result is a warm, thoughtfully strung together mix of soupy digi-dub, street-wise downtempo dnb and sprightly, colorful dancehall. Big love to Daniel for being down with us putting this out and to everyone who comes down early and stays late.
