We are joined by UC Davis professor of literature and critical theory, JOSHUA CLOVER, who is also a communist and the author of several books including RIOT STRIKE RIOT: THE NEW ERA OF UPRISINGS (Verso, 2016). 

This conversation begins with the street protests that have erupted across the US in response to the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and so many other black Americans at the hands of the police. It then expands to encompass digital platforms, definitions of violence and property, the promise of communes, and the caveats of UBI, giving a trans-historical view of revolutionary resistance at the hinge points of political transformation.

Clarification: At 21:55, Clover refers to the Civil Rights Act (re the 1968 MLK Jr. riots). This is technically accurate, and it was officially known as the Civil Rights Act of 1968. But that risks confusing it with the far more well-known Civil Rights Act of 1964, which is why the 1968 act is more popularly know as the Fair Housing Act.

Il sottosuolo non è scuro non è sabbia bagnata che goccia creando torri. Il sotto suolo è un terreno d’oro coperto da trasparenti cristallini involucri. Delle energie forano il pensiero e le radici strette lo conservano nel corso dei secoli. Non pensate di sbarazzarvi di lei. Vecu vive dietro gli occhi di colui che non sa di esserlo. Sta già cambiando il fuoco col suo sguardo. Nessun vampirismo. Solo un sorriso che non fa ridere ma che annuisce allo sguardo di Dio. Oltre le ciglia del tempo è la personificazione del destino celeste.

Edited Arts is launching My Promises by My Cruelty.

The St. Petersburg artist, producer and DJ Lyudmila Severtseva aka My Cruelty comes through with an uplifting and emotional EP of acid-tinged dance explorations. Synthetic digi-pop, with ‘pop’ referring more so to the light explosive sound rather than the area of music itself. 5 tracks of hopeful sour candy.

My Promises is a logical continuation and development of recent albums on Genot Centre and #internetghetto. Her music has previously been described as “Imagine Mark Fell crossed with “Avril 14th” and you’re not far off. But in spite of the generative feel of the composition, it never feels academic or stuffy, instead lilting, inviting and a bit mischievous.”

In this EP, My Cruelty continues to interpret the real. With connections between people becoming more and more invisible, the promised can be more difficult to fulfil. This love, strength, perseverance, patience. The most beautiful thing is to illuminate the life of the person you love, and those who need this light.
