"For this mix, I wanted to try something a little bit out of my comfort zone. Instead of a dance mix I went with the downtempo & trip hop sounds I've been inspired by as of late."

Spring has arrived. And with it, so many perky little asparagus. I provide local foods to the Seattle community alongside my recipe co-creator and colleague Casey Gillum. We crafted our Creamy Vegan Asparagus & Potato Soup with Charred Asparagus Tips to heal, soothe, and transition us all out of the darkness of Winter into the bright, unfolding beauty of Spring. Put the mix on during the preparations and merging of the ingredients and  flow through ambient, meditative, and downtempo rhythms. Then, reflect as you taste spoonful after spoonful, becoming aware of the transformations inside yourself and the emerging growth outside. This mix showcases some local producers, highlighting the breadth and possibilities of sourcing locally, whether on the table or on your speakers. I hope you enjoy the recipe and mix!

Creamy Vegan Asparagus & Potato Soup with Charred Asparagus Tips

Salt, enough to cover a shallow baking pan
3-4 potatoes--white or yellow
1 bunch asparagus, trim woody ends and save; trim tips and save one cup and set aside, coarsely chop the remaining asparagus
3 stalks celery; Trim ends and set aside; chop remaining celery
1 onion, Peel and save skin; Mince remaining Onion
4 cloves garlic, Peel and save skin; Mince remaining garlic
2 green/spring onions, trim ends and save; Slice remaining thinly
1 bunch parsley, Trim stems and set aside; Chop Parsley leaves
1 Tablespoon olive oil
 White pepper and salt to taste


1. Fill a pan with a shallow layer of salt, place potatoes on salt and roast at 375 degrees until skins wrinkle

2. Put asparagus ends into 1 quart of water. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes.

3. Add celery, onion and garlic peel along with green onion ends to the stock of asparagus ends. Continue to simmer for 10 minutes

4. Strain Stock

5. Add chopped asparagus to stock and simmer until soft, 7 minutes.  

6. Pour asparagus and stock into a blender.  

7. Remove potato from the oven and let cool. 

8. Heat a pan with a generous amount of oil and add onion/celery/garlic, saute until bottom of pan dries and onions are translucent.  

9. Toss spring onions through and add to the blender.  

10. Peel potatoes and add peeled potato to the blender

11. Add parsley and season with white pepper and salt 

12. Blend until smooth, add the tablespoon of oil slowly until soup is glossy.

13. Heat pan with a small amount of oil and add asparagus tips and slightly char each side   

Serve cold or hot.

Garnish ideas: red chili flakes, green onions, swirl of cream, dollop of sour cream or yogurt

Secret Sauce 09 - MxWix

This Spring, we had our inaugural New Palm campout in the high desert of Johnson Valley for two days and two nights of seasoned raging. After several years of delays, it was quite the feeling to have this come to fruition.

 We revisit our seasonal mix series with an approximation of a set from that weekend by New Palm regular Kevin Lipman, aka @under_current, who closed out our first night. Sure-footed, stoic, and moody, Kevin brought out the desert bleak with patient selections and sprinklings of his original work.
 
The campout was a veritable group effort, so thanks to everyone who came and did it right, and as always, big thanks to core enablers Carter & Leah for the brains and sound, Robbie & Mark for the muscles, Saba for the hot car, John for the tasteful shade, Michael, Tim & Sabrina for the libations, Alka, Josiah, Cha Cha (+ others) for the sustenance, and Phil for the wonderful eye.

For the summer installment of our mix series, we’re thrilled to share a special live recording from our Gradient campout with PrintShop this April by DJ and friend Kaleb Marshall  . 

Kaleb soundtracked the early afternoon hours in the high desert with a superb blend of atmospheric downtempo and psychedellic, trip-hop leaning electronica. We rarely, if ever, get to hear sets like this out on a big system ~ it was an absolute delight and standout memory.

Kaleb Marshall  - @ergot88 - is a Los Angeles based DJ & artist with an atmospheric, eclectic & percussive sound that we were excited to get in the fold. You can catch him play out on occasion at Homage, Tuff Shed, PrintShop, and other local favorite happenings. 

  We'll be releasing info later this year about our 2024 plans for Gradient campout with PrintShop, follow @gradientcampout on IG for more.

For the tenth installment of New Palm’s seasonal mix series, we’re honored to invite @diskonnected - one of our favorite selectors, our recent guest in LA, resident at Hong Kong’s famed 宀 club, and the mastermind behind Taiwan’s Smoke Machine @smokemachinetaipei series. 

We have long been fans of Diskonnected since locking in to his extended sets on the shores of Hualien at Smoke Machine’s flagship Organik festival a decade ago. Hearing his sound both hone in and expand out over the years since has been a continual source of inspiration for us and a big influence on the kinds of sounds we gravitate towards. 

We’re pleased to present Diskonnected’s mix of left-field ambient, experimental, and downtempo, recorded live at a chill-out night at Taipei’s Pawnshop @pawnshoptaipei in 2021. Thank you for sharing this with us 🙏

We trust it will hold up to repeat listens, and hope the moods within will be a fitting soundtrack for the changing season 🤲 Enjoy ~

For the eleventh installment of New Palm’s semi-seasonal mix series, we gladly welcome back our resident agraybé with a distinctly memorable live recording from our collaborative Gradient Campout in the high desert with our homies eternal, PrintShop

Ariana has consistently proven to step up to every occasion exceedingly well, meeting the moment with an astute sense for what needs to happen next. We’ve loved hearing her define and diversify this ability further over the years, showing equal mastery over the moments of holding back, and the moments of letting it rip.

This time it was the latter, playing to the desert moonrise at the ramp up hours of a marathon  weekend, Ariana lit the fire so it’d burn all night. We loved every second of her psychedelically gripping lunar joyride, and we’re thrilled to share it here. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do 🌑
