Rosh Hashanah Melodies 2019

Grateful am I / are we, to awaken and arise each and every day. To start anew. To be present to this day. This song list (loosely) follows a morning prayer service, which some additions and splashes of delight, to start the morning with gratitude on the heart and tongue. Sing it out! Offer love to the land and water and body and sky, all our neighbors and friends and beloveds. Love you big. Love each other big. Welcome to this new day!

Morning Blessings

Shabbat singing

Adon Olam is one of the most ancient Piyutim that is still widely known and sung throughout the communities of Israel. Some attribute this Piyut to R. Shlomo Ibn Gabirol (The Rashbag), although there is no proof that he is the author. It is customary to sing this Piyut before morning prayers. Medieval rabbis regarded this poem with high esteem. Rabbi Yehudah the Pious of Germany wrote: “I guarantee that the prayers of one who says Adon Olam with attention are heard, and that Satan shall not act against his prayers... some say that even the evil inclination within him will reside and not entice him” (Sha’arei Tﬁlah 308:10b). The reason for this reverence can be attributed to the rare combination of the most important principles of faith with a sense of natural, emotional closeness to the Divine.

Beginning my day with gratitude, even when I feel so very far from grateful, is for sure a practice. And each time I feel this chant move through me, I am reminded yet again of how precious it is to be given a chance to start again, to breathe in breath. That the same impulse that creates and is twilight and moss, that is ocean tides and lavender is also creating me and you and all of us, all the millions of tiny cells that make us who we are, in the very same moment. How amazing!

For most of the COVID quarantine, I have been sick. It has been physically and emotionally challenging to attend now-virtual class as usual, do my various jobs as usual, take care of my one and a half year old full time (not as usual), and all the while wondering what I am sick with, and whether it has unknown affects on the 16 week old baby-to-be in my womb.

One morning I woke up and even though I could barely speak, this tune came out of me. So I composed a new Modah/Modeh Ani for the voiceless, for the solitude of quarantine, for those of us struggling to insert a bit of hoda’ah, gratitude, into a difficult situation. Because we know that naming the blessings that we have in our life, while it may not change what is around us, brings light and hope into our inner world. 

Join me in beginning each day with Modah/Modeh Ani, to whatever tune you know. And if this tune moves you, download this track and sing along with me in the mornings. 

Together we can give thanks to all the little pieces that make life worth loving.

Modah Ani For The Voiceless

Modah/Modeh Ani is a prayer said upon waking up in amazement that the spirit has returned from the dream world to the body! There are so many beautiful and joyful melodies for this prayer, but sometimes waking up and discovering oneself alive, while beautiful, is also kind of eerie and bizarre. Here's my slightly emo Modah Ani for you to try out when the right moment hits <3 

I thank you, vital and present Ruler/Spirit of the Universe, for you returned my spirit to me with compassion. Your faithfulness is abundant.
