TED Talk: 10 ways to have a better conversation

Trust. It certainly makes life easier when it exists. Instead of having to craft complicated contracts for a business deal, a simple handshake will do. Instead of surveilling your spouse like the NSA, you take them at their word.

But trust, it seems, is in short supply these days. We’re afraid of trusting people and we have a hard time getting people to trust us. How can you establish trust in even the most toxic environments?

My guest today thinks he has the answer to that question. His name is Robin Dreeke, and he's spent his career working in a field where trust is hard to get but important to have — doing counterintelligence for the FBI. Robin’s recently published a book sharing how he has been able to gain the trust of people who aren’t very keen on trusting others. It’s called "The Code of Trust."

Today on the show, Robin shares the five rules of building trust with anyone — no matter how suspicious they are of you. While these rules may seem like they’re an invitation to become a human doormat, Robin explains why that’s not the case, and how they actually make you more influential.

Whether you’re working with spies, like Robin, or just want to build more trust in your office or relationships, you’re going to find plenty of interesting and actionable advice in this podcast.

Sky Sky's Lesson 2:

Gravitational waves are ‘ripples’ in spacetime that are created by some of the most violent events in the Universe. Gravitational waves were only a prediction made by Einstein in 1916 and were not directly proven until 2015 when LIGO detected distortions in spacetime caused by a collision of two black holes that happened roughly 1.3 billion light years away. This discovery is truly one of humanity’s most proud accomplishments.

This track features the legendary and my favorite English theoretical physicist & cosmologist Stephen Hawking. The sample was taken from his BBC interview about LIGO's discovery of gravitational waves. He says that this discovery is incredibly significant because it provides a completely new channel to observe and study the universe we live in. The observed properties of this black hole binary system were consistent with predictions about black holes (black hole area theorem)that he made in 1970. His famous Bekenstein-Hawking formula describes the entropy of a black hole. It helps us understand black holes by connecting thermodynamical quantities (entropy) to physical properties of the black hole (area). Hawking also developed his own theory with the Hawking radiation that leads to describe the Holographic Principle. 

I wish Stephen Hawking was still around to further interpret our discoveries and to help us get closer to finding the 'Theory of Everything'. He was the Einstein of our modern era, but he will always continue to inspire me. I wish I was smart enough to help contribute to figuring out this bizarre Universe we live in; however, I lack knowledge. But what I can do to help is by sparking interest in Astrophysics and Cosmology through the music I create to the people of our future. I can only hope that all the heart and passion I put into my music will inspire everyone to look up and out into deep space and someday figure this all out for us.

Gravitational Waves - SKY SKY

Antibiotics are a pillar of modern medicine. They have saved millions of lives. But as the use of antibiotics has increased, so has the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant microbes that have adapted to survive most, or all, of today’s antibiotics. The CDC reports that two million people are infected with drug-resistant bacteria every year in the United States, and the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance estimated that, around the world, 700,000 people die of such infections annually. That number stands to increase: the Review predicts that, by 2050, drug resistance could be responsible for 10 million deaths a year. And while these numbers are dominated by bacterial infections, fungal infections like Candida auris are also a threat, especially to vulnerable patients in hospitals and nursing homes. 

Despite drug resistance growing, the development of new antibiotics has slowed. How can policymakers help accelerate the pace of new drug development, and how can all of us—doctors, hospitals, and patients, as well as the agricultural sector—be better stewards of existing drugs? Forum panelists examined the scope of this looming crisis and look at how changes in policy and practice can help us stay one step ahead of these superbugs.

Drug-Resistant Infections: Confronting an Escalating Crisis

It’s not often that you get to celebrate a sesquicentennial, but that’s just what the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency did this fall at its Springfield, Virginia, campus. For 150 years, the Notice to Mariners has kept navigators and shipmasters informed with the most current navigational information. The average observer would be forgiven for not knowing the notice even exists. Vessels navigating safely rarely make headlines. Notice to Mariners have neither dramatic moments nor hair-raising adventures. Yet for 150 years, every American ship officer, reflecting on a safely completed voyage, owes a piece of that to the men and women behind the Notice to Mariners. Today, NGA’s Maritime Safety Office has the responsibility to provide accurate charts and publications, including the Notice to Mariners, to support safety of navigation.
