Composed by Nicanor Abelardo, "UP Naming Mahal" is the school hymn of the University of the Philippines. I was asked by the UP-PCCA to arrange a choral version and the above version was performed by the UP Concert Chorus.

I took some time away to write a short collection of piano and string pieces named 'Of Sleep and Time'. This is the opening piece.

"U.P. Naming Mahal" is the university hymn of the University of the Philippines. The melody for the song was written by Nicanor Abelardo, an alumnus and former faculty member of the U.P. College of Music. Abelardo is considered to be one of the Philippines' greatest musicians. The original English lyrics (entitled as "U.P. Beloved") were taken from a poem by Teogenes Velez, a Liberal Arts student. The translation to Filipino was a composite from seven entries in a contest held by the University. The judges did not find any of the seven translations as fully satisfactory.

Naotaro Moriyama rose to popularity in Japan thanks to his composition entitled “Sakura”, a pop song that portrays the persona longing to meet his friend in the afterlife. The cherry blossoms in this song possibly portray two things: the first one being his friend that was once in full bloom yet destined to fall, and the other one being the imagery of the place in the afterlife: a road lined with cherry blossoms.

This arrangement incorporates an excerpt of the Japanese traditional folk song, incidentally of the same name, as a depiction of the spring season where cherry blossoms are in full bloom. These excerpts are found in the beginning of the piece to exemplify the imagery of cherry blossoms in full bloom that springboards to the heart of the song, and are found at the end to signify the “moment of rebirth” the songwriter believed in.

Performed by the Boscorale under the baton of Mr. Alvin B. Paulin last August 5, 2018, during the Special Concert of the 34th Takarazuka International Chamber Chorus Contest at Vega Hall, Takarazuka, Japan.
