sometimes a man sets out to compose something but then time, as it fucking does, passes and he runs out of it and realizes at the last minute oh shit that was supposed to be for today. initially there was going to be one section for each johnba but unfortunately i was the man (shocker) and ran out of time so i shoved the johnbas for whom i had not composed a part into one section and it was sad and tragic but i also didn't want to miss the date because of its significance and i don't know how i feel about the fact that symbolism is more important to me than quality but hey!! that's life baybee

is it conceited of me to write about the johnba almost entirely in terms of myself? on some level, probably, yes. i'd prefer to think of it as more scientific like that, kind of a case study. and as i am, obviously, not any of you, i'm kind of the only case available. is it also conceited to expect everyone to read this absolute wall of text? also almost definitely yes. tl;dr: support systems. damn :pensive:

i've gone over the sentimental bullshit so many times, but it bears repeating. when i first came into johnba, it was a "just for kicks" kind of thing. albeit with an undertone of my usual hyper-paranoid fomo, but, as cold as it sounds, i didn't really care about any of you or your opinions of me. usually i wouldn't have gone into something so recklessly, but apathy is freeing in that way, i guess. i fully expected the server to die out within a few weeks as people stopped talking to each other and left, and you all proved me wrong - only one of many occasions in which the sheer quantity of inane bullshit you spout on a regular basis would astound me. not everyone was active, but enough people talked that i found myself engaged as well.

as people became closer, i doubted that i would have the same degree of intimacy with everyone because of my own social troubles and contemplated leaving to avoid the trouble. yet again, i was proven wrong. i felt like i had some semblance of that intuitive understanding of others that is supposed to be inherent in relationships, even if it was less than what other people described, and given that it was with such a large group of people, it caught me off-guard. not in a wholly ungratifying way, though. more people were added over time, and i had some degree of distress, but i didn't feel overwhelmed or violated by these new faces (profile pictures?) like i had in the past. to steal a page out of lee's book: johnba, in reference to both the server itself and the people, was enough of a home for me that i didn't feel like i could be uprooted easily.

for real-life humans, there is no end of a character arc, duh, and they aren't even really arcs so much as big blobs of change that just keep happening and happening. but i think i've changed significantly enough to call this...i dunno. something definitive. a particular part of my blob of change that lets me, on occasion, do shit without questioning it. so thanks for proving me wrong.

my brain is still a dumbass little ball of anxiety sometimes. that's how it's always going to be, probably, and it's a problem i have to manage on my own. but there's something to be said for exposure therapy, isn't there? i didn't do it on purpose, but putting myself out of my comfort zone, even if it was for perhaps less benevolent reasons than i'd like, expanded the boundary of what kind of love and care i was willing to accept. i obtained it largely through coincidence - that i joined a server on a whim, that i put in the effort to talk, that i stayed, that you all somehow miraculously decided to put up with me and read tone and inflection through a screen and that we had anything in common at all that let us mesh together in such a perfectly serendipitous way - but, if only for my own sake, i'll still count it as a win. thanks, fate and coincidence, for putting us together, and thanks to all of you for putting in the work to love each other.
