A Journey in Disco and Funk - February 2022

Episode 80 sees me husky voiced and bringing the vibes as best I can, with a selection of mid tempo rollers, sexy slow mo numbers and banging promos. There’s my new one on And Friends Records in there, plus new bits from Andy Buchan, Moodena, Ezirk and more.

In hour 2 it’s my great pleasure to introduce a DJ whose sets I’ve really been digging over the last 6 months or so. She’s called Sbeen Around, and is from Reykjavik in Iceland. She’s got an exceptional talent for mixing up the smoothest, deepest vibes and I’m pleased to say she’s delivered in style for this mix. She brings us 63 minutes of beautiful deep and soulful house. The whole mix is lovely, but there are a couple of tracks right in the middle that just raise the roof.

Jezebel Diaries is an ode to the spirit of Jezebel, blending jazzy, R&B, percussive, and Hip-Hop sounds. The sultry and vibrant spirit demonized throughout history that blesses all the dungeon masters, night walkers, and fantasy curators. She is the spirit who holds those forgotten and cast away by their mothers, fathers, families, and exploited by those in power. This EP was my chance to explore my vulnerabilities while also having fun with sound and showcasing my vocal abilities as a singer and songwriter. This is an entirely different sound from my other projects, but it was a beautiful process for me to grow as an artist. Primarily produced by Amada of closegood and me, this project transports you to a different world, culminating in a self-composed, piano-led track that leaves you pleading, begging to be seen as whole.

This lyric reframes the pawn not as a disposable piece, but as the rhythmic backbone of the system—a symbol of unseen labour, coded resistance, and soulful defiance. It blends cipher rap with groove, turning grief into motion and marginalization into melody. The pawn moves first, yet never chooses—its agency denied, but its impact undeniable.
The verses expose how the pawn is counted but not heard, used but not valued, yet it carries the beat of the streets and the pulse of the queue. The hook flips the narrative: though treated like a number, the pawn moves like gold—precious, powerful, and foundational.
