TThis program offers a rare musical portrait of Somalia’s formative, pre-civil war years (1960-90). In a rising mood of patriotism and hope, Somalis sought to forge a culturally authentic, but also modern, national identity. Poetry, theatrical plays, and gorgeous, lyrical songs with influences from Arab art music, Hindi film songs and rich local traditions were central to this movement. Historian Lidwien Kapteijns, author of Women’s Voices in a Man’s World, is our guide as we hear rare archival recordings and get inside the social debates and gender negotiations contained in their lyrics. From the poetry of the rural hinterlands, to the recording studios of Mogadishu, and the nostalgia of Somali rapper K’Naan, this program reveals the rich culture behind the grim headlines of recent years. Banning Eyre presents songs and stories from Somalia's fertile independence era, and up to the present. This podcast is a supplement to Afropop's Hip Deep program "Reconstructiong Somalia, Love Songs at the Birth of a Nation." Somali scholar and former broadcaster Ahmed Ismail Samatar introduces Somali oud virtuoso Hodeidi. Historian Lidwien Kapteijns continues her brilliant and amiable commentary on the love songs in which gender debates played out in the '60s and '70s, and brings the story right up to the present with fascinating reflections on the early career of the rapper/songwriter K'Naan.

In STEALTH by Sonallah Ibrahim, the narrator, a boy living in Cairo sneaks around the city spying on its citzens. By taking in its sights, sounds, and smells, the boy creates a portraint of 1950s Cairo. In a previous post, we explored those sights with an animation by Nathaniel Whitcomb who created a motion collage from the mid-century Cairo photographs of Don Church. Now, we present to you a mix of popular 1950s Egytian music compiled by Brian Shimkovitz of Awesome Tapes From Africa.
