2020 saw Reel People Music release many a soulful gem but none more so than Sebb Junior’s stunning collaboration ‘Special’ featuring US R&B singer/songwriter Muhsinah.

2023 now sees a wonderful new interpretation of Special courtesy of one of the UK’s most talented musicians & producers, Kaidi Tatham.

Special was part of Sebb’s ‘Together Alone’ EP and alongside Muhsinah saw Sebb team up with some prestigious talent including Eric Roberson, Paula, Karmina Dai and Reel People’s very own Mike Patto. 

Originally from France but now very happily settled in Spain, Sebb Junior is one of house music’s modern day heroes. DJ, producer & all round good guy, Sebb’s quality and consistency is undeniable thanks to releases on hugely respected labels like Large Music, Madhouse Records, Papa Records, Sub Urban Music, Nervous Records, Milk & Sugar, Quantize Records, Let There Be House and his own label  La Vie D’Artiste Music. 

Hailing from Washington DC, Muhsinah continues to push the boundaries of soul and electronic fusion. Her previous boundary-breaking output has, impressively, earned the attention of luminaries ranging from Common to Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and makes Muhsinah one of the most exciting and unique talents.

Kaidi Tatham is a legendary multi-instrumentalist born in the Midlands and based in Belfast. Established as one of the original creators of the Broken Beat sound, he is a virtuoso on the keys and a true innovator in sound production. 
A deeply prolific artist, Kaidi has just released his beautiful 5th solo album ‘The Only Way’, following on First Word Records.

Back when I had a label, I used to spend ages searching for music that I liked, but no-one else had done anything with in the UK. Not the most commercial way to run a business (and possibly one of the reasons I no longer have a label...) but it kept me happy. 
One of the labels I talked to often was Le Maquis from France - they put out some amazing tunes, hardly any of which ever caught the UK's imagination. Still can't work out why,  not least because anyone I played their stuff to loved it almost as much as I did...
ANYWAY I've just rediscovered a compilation CD they gave me, and I've decided to stick this tune up for people to check -  it's called "Chicken Song" (even though it starts with howler monkey noises) and it's a great piece of chilled broken beat jazz lounge. Big atmospheric washy pads, cool organ riffs,  cool as fuck guitar, sexy bassline, great syncopated drums and perc, and random film dialogue vocal samples, but as far as I can tell, no chicken; I ask you - what's not to love? 

I have no idea if Soundcloud will let this stay up (especially as I've made it public and downloadable) but if they do, I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you search out Le Maquis old releases (I think they're mostly rock now)  there's some great stuff out there somewhere!

Sometime promoter, rigger, crew member, stage manager, compère, photographer, so-so designer and, increasingly more often these days, DJ - which has come as a most welcome surprise. Play a very wide range of music, all with touches of funk and genuine soul, although I include Pink Martini in that! Absolutely love playing dirty ghetto funk AND the slower groovier end of the dance spectrum. Play an average of 2 1/2 gigs a weekend. Have a weekly Sunday gig  8pm - 1am at Brighton's hippest new hotel, playing everything from 40's swing (sometimes) via Eastern European dance, to the deepest house (always), seldom getting above 123 bpm. Love finding and playing new music; addicted to Soundcloud. Not re-mixing at the moment, though have in the past, including for (believe it or not) Freddie Mercury and Motorhead :-) Have a permanent pain syndrome, which means I've always got lots of kick-ass painkillers...
