DRUM KITS & SAMPLE PACKS

Arturia’s Drumbrute Impact is a quirky little drum machine that has been a strong seller since its inception in 2018. The little brother to the full-sized Drumbrute, the Impact slims down the form factor and number of available sounds while swapping the original’s filter for color and distortion effects. A good value for its low price point, the Drumbrute Impact has robust sequencing flexibility and a very hands-on workflow. Its synthetic sound, which leans towards the lo-fi side of the spectrum, puts it in its own lane away from other machines everyone knows and loves like the TR-808, 909, DMX and LinnDrum.

For the first time ever, I am making many of the sounds from the Drumbrute Impact available online for free to use in your own projects. Included here are AIFF files of each of the 10 sounds, plus the mentronome click, dialed in at numerous parameter combinations. For example, the kick includes 11 different decays with 11 different pitch permutations, leading to 121 samples. Or in the most extreme case, 1330 different permutations of the FM drum.

Oh yeah, I also recorded all the permutations of every instrument minus the FM drum in each of the distortion modes: with no color or distortion, with color and no distortion, with no color and distortion, and with color and distortion. Because there’s over a thousand different permutations of the FM drum, I was only able to do the no color/distortion version otherwise people would think I was clinically insane or something ;)

XX = denotes if color or distortion are applied; XX has neither, XD just
distortion, CX just color, CD has both
Tone 01 = refers to the specific parameter with 01 to 11 settings; many
sounds have multiple parameters

While these sounds paint a good picture of what’s possible on the Drumbrute Impact, it’s still no replacement for the real thing! If you dig using these samples, I highly recommend picking one up and taking it out for a test drive. It’s a powerful, intuitive little machine.

Well its been a while since Amen Vol 4 (3 yearsish), and thought it was time to play some of the the tunes that have been gathering dust in my collection. Music has taken a back seat for me the past year or so, as have been focusing on work, friends, exercise and mountains more.

Jungle right across the board represented here I must say, starting off in the low 160s bpm and ending up at 200bpm.

In honor of 7/07, I'm sharing with you guys some one-shots from the TR-707 expansion module from my TR8 drum machine. But as TR-707 samples are already quite ubiquitous, I decided to make these ones unique by running them through my Akai S950 sampler. 

The S950 was a fixture in early 90s hip hop, jungle and house music. Because it's a 12-bit sampler, it adds a bit of unique grit to the sound that no software has ever quite been able to emulate as of yet.

I recorded every sound from the 707 (kicks, snares, toms, claps, hats, rimshot & crash) with around 25 different combinations of tune and decay settings for each. The streamable file above can be downloaded as-is, but be sure to grab the link below as well. This includes a ZIP file with all the individual hits in folders, as well as a collected Ableton project with all the hits converted to drum racks.

I'm going to be making more S950-processed packs on 7/27, 8/08, and 9/09 honoring those respective drum machines as well so watch this space!

Roland TR-707 Meets Akai S950: Free Sample Pack

Following in the footsteps of the 7/07 pack I uploaded earlier this month, I'm sharing with you more one-shots from my Roland TR8. This time it's the TR-727 expansion pack, just in time for 7/27! Like the last time, I've run every hit through my Akai S950 to add some gritty textures to the formula.

The TR-727 is sort of the lost dog of the Roland classic drum machine series. Released in conjunction with the TR-707 in 1985, the TR-727 had the same functionality as its brother yet focused entirely on Latin percussion. 

Included in this pack are the majority of the sounds from the 727, including bongos, congas, agogos, cabasas, quijadas, whistles, and the star chime. There are around 25 different combinations of tune and decay settings for each. The streamable file above can be downloaded as-is, but be sure to grab the link below as well. This includes a ZIP file with all the individual hits in folders, as well as a collected Ableton project with all the hits converted to drum racks.

Be on the lookout for 8/08 and 9/09...I shouldn't have to explain things much further!

Roland TR-727 Meets Akai S950: Free Sample Pack

Last month I released sample packs on 7/07 and 7/27 honoring Roland's legendary mid-80s drum machines. I ran all the samples through Akai's S950 sampler for added gritty texture and am posting them here for mass consumption.

Now it's 8/08, so it's only obvious what the next step is for this series. Roland's TR-808 needs very little introduction; it's likely the most used (and abused) old school drum machine in history.

I managed to get a clean recording of every sound from his original TR-808. This includes a very large variety of tone, decay, and tune settings for the kick, snare, conga, tom, cymbal, and open hat. Similar to the other packs from last month, I then ran everything through the S950, then saved all the hits in separate folders.

Another free sample pack for you guys, this time courtesy of my Korg Volca Beats drum machine. 

Similar to my Roland TR-808, 707 and 727 packs, I recorded each drum sound from the Volca Beats with multiple combinations of pitch and decay settings. While the audio I uploaded to Soundcloud has been limited and compressed a bit to make it easy to preview, the downloadable ZIP file below is unprocessed and includes plenty of headroom to work with.

There are over 200 individual samples here which include kicks, snares, open and closed hats, hi and low toms, claps, crashes, claves and agogos. 

As long as you all keep digging these packs I'll keep uploading samples from more drum machines I buy!

Back in 2015 I uploaded 3 sample packs on 7/07, 7/27 and 8/08 to celebrate each respective classic drum machine made by Roland. To differentiate these packs against the thousands of other TR-707, 727 and 808 ones on the internet, I ran all of the sounds through my Akai S950 sampler to give each hit a grittier, harder-driving lo-fi sound. Each pack was well received and they continue to be downloaded and enjoyed two years later.

Unfortunately life got in the way and was never able to get around to making a TR-909 pack for 9/09….UNTIL NOW.

Over the past week I finally managed to record 1350 different hits from my TR-909, and run each of them through my S950. In each one’s lo-fi, 12-bit gritty glory I am happy to finally share these with you guys.

WHAT’S INCLUDED HERE:

BASS DRUM/KICK: 5 different pitches, each with 11 differnet length attacks and 5 different decay settings per attack (275 samples)
SNARE: 11 different pitches (B2 to A3), each with 11 different decay settings and 5 different snappy settings per decay (590 samples)
LOW TOM: 12 different pitches (C#2 to C3), each with 11 different decay settings (132 samples)
MID TOM: 12 different pitches (F#2 to F3), each with 11 different decay settings (132 samples)
HI TOM: 11 different pitches (G2 to F#3), each with 11 different decay settings (121 samples)
RIM SHOT: 1 sample
CLAP: 1 sample
CLOSED HAT: 11 different decays (11 samples)
OPEN HAT: 11 different decays (11 samples)
CRASH: 24 different tunings, plus 12 different weird tweaks (36 samples)
RIDE: 24 different tunings, plus 13 weird tweaks (37 samples)

Not all the samples are perfect, some may be slightly out of tune, some aren’t chopped exactly on the waveform, etc, but they can easily be adjusted in your sampler. And sometimes, imperfect is better in the lo-fi realm!
