Hysteria is a two piece (guitar and drums) that is presently located at the birth of it's two man band form in North Salt Lake, UT...Daron Nelson (Drums) and I, Adam Gardell (Grundvig) (guitar/vocals) live together in a house with another roommate and an older couple, just a few miles north of Salt Lake City...I am on disability and have struggled with homelessness as well...I played college basketball at Wichita State University from 2000-2001, during which time I received an acoustic guitar for Christmas (2000)...over the next year (2001) I began teaching myself how to play rather slowly, but as I began to fall in love with it, I eventually decided it was my passion in life during that summer...I then took one class on guitar, where I learned a few chords, but afterwards went my own direction and learned for myself how to play while at the same time trying to play like my hero, Kurt Cobain...Federation X (Bellingham, WA & now in Oregon I believe) was the first band I ever really saw play live and they blew me away...just watching them play, at Kirby's Beer Store during their visit in 2002 when I had moved into a house just off the University Campus and just a few houses from Kirby's, left me awestruck and completely inspired...visiting Kirby's for the next year and a half was the source of much inspiration to me and eventually where I played my first ever acoustic set and a few more after that...I left Wichita in 2004 just after I stopped playing my acoustic set, because I believed I was ready to play in a band...Not feeling like I had the experience to gain approval from other bands in the Wichita music scene, I set out to legitify myself for the next four years or so...It all ended after suffering from poor decisions I made and realizing that I was okay how I was when I started my musical quest...I;m just different than other people...so I struggled with having a place to stay from 2004 until 2009, when I was accepted back into my family and given a bedroom to stay in...this is the only reason why I've been able to form the band as it now is, as Daron moved in around December of 2010 and we began playing together over the following six months, until we eventually established a better routine of things and started to work harder to play our music better...we've recorded our original material on our own and you can check it out at http://hysteriaslc.bandcamp.com/ ...it's not as great as I'd like and I'm hoping to in the not so distant future re-record it...we are also working on new material that is very exciting...as for the band name, during the beginning of 2004 I was tripping out on cough and cold medicine and speaking with the spirits of Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain...Jim, was my first musical influence and Kurt, my second...I was sitting in a fairly cold loft that had a big bedroom and an adjacent open area, one might call another room, but which had a glass closet on oneside of it and emptiness on the other side of it...I was sitting against the wall on the emptyside, occasionally gazing into the mirror doors of the closet on the otherside and sitting on the floor...Kurt was sitting to my left and Jim was sitting to my right...they were being very encouraging of me playing my music and as we were caught up in what we were doing, things came to a head, point, or climax of which I was inspired by Kurt to write a name on a piece of my art paper...I had no forethought as to what I was going to write, but the word came to me as I put the pencil to the paper and Kurt suggested I not take the pencil off the paper as I wrote out the word "hysteria" in all lower caps with a signature scribble like 's' in the middle of the word...this was Kurt's gift to me and has been the name by which I was intending to call my band since that experience...
