Jonas Schilling is a musician from Germany and currently lives in Berlin.
As a multi-instrumentalist and sound explorer he likes to work with everything that sounds. The urge to be surprised is one of his main motivations. That’s why every Jonas Schilling track starts with experimentation and improvisation.

As a part-time German teacher he regards music as a language and rhythm as its grammar. Is it more important what you say or how you say it? Does right or wrong exist in music? Is it “der”, “die” or “das” Kick Drum?

His compositions are often born out of deep melancholy being rescued by optimistic warmth. After spending some years in Berlin's electronic scene, his music is also reminiscent of countless Sunday afternoons on sunlit dance floors.
Besides writing music as a solo artist, he is also composing for theatre and contemporary dance projects.

5778 was planned and composed in the classic sense of emotional song writing. Last winter i looked out of my window in Berlin and thought to write something that would cheer me up. I needed something full of light and energy, something heroic that would be opposed to how i felt.

Brass was the most logical instrument to compose this hymn. What you hear is like a Fanfare that was only blown after 7 days of loop tweaking. 
All went automatically from there. What really drove me was the spiritual urge to go upwards, to grow towards the sun. 
This feeling is what ultimately led to the title of the track. 
5778 Kelvin is the average temperature of the Sun’s surface. 

After several revisions of the track I was very lucky to be on my balcony when some kids were playing in front of my house on an early spring day.
If you listen carefully you can hear them proclaim „Wir sind die Größten!“ („We are the greatest!“)

Some tracks grow spontaneously and organically, flowing from a small seed of inspiration into a forest of rhythm. Higher ground was one of those tracks, born from a serendipitous collab between Oedipa Maas and Jonas Schilling. 

Jonas’s initial idea sparked the fire already, leading us to build upon it with a complex interplay of polyrhythmic sounds and textures, all hooked together with a steady kick drum. The densely layered motifs, ebbing and flowing over the constant beat like in a trance.

Dark Days seeks strength in a world of darkness. It has a pulsating beat but still it’s easy to stumble from time to time. Music cannot be happy all the time but it should always give us strength and a new connection to the world even if it’s through disconnection. The song reminds me of moments on the dance floor when I was able to completely forget the others and myself, pride and insecurities and just dance.

„Lichtamendedestunnels“ was written around an extremely simple electric baseline I recorded when I was looking for some analogue material to work on. 
The idea was to create something powerful. A feeling of marching through a dark night with flashes of light on a starry sky. 
Asteroids, supernovas, deep blue and green colors. 
Moments of resting while admiring the beauty of darkness and light, before we march on. 
Darkness can be scary but it can also give us strength when we realize that’s it’s made for us to admire and to find the light hidden within or beyond it.

The idea to write a dance song that feels like a lullaby was interesting to me because usually the time we enjoy dance music is when we are wide awake, dancing trough the night and not lying in bed. But sometimes we dare closing our eyes on a full dance floor and it’s only ourselves and the music. We know that the others are around us but they feel more like a safe, warm blanket. We start sleepwalking or „sleepdancing“ and we can see flashes of colors. 
When I was younger I used to experiment a lot with lucid dreaming, which can be disturbing. Sometimes it can be difficult to differentiate what’s a dream and what’s not. But it can also show you how endless our brains capacities and creativity are. That lucid dreaming can free our mind.  That dreaming and being awake should not be seen as antipodes but rather two qualities of our mind that we can learn to connect and combine. To dream our lives as a way to live our dreams.
