Day Light Dusk

This started as usual with an acoustic riff and then ended up here (comments appreciated), recorded this through a Warm Audio Tone Beast TB12 (get one), best bit of kit I ever bought. I also used an upgraded Rode NT 2 microphone, upgraded by Lover Man Audio Mods who you can find on eBay, he makes your microphone sound like a 2 grand microphone. Acoustic guitars, bass, drums and vocals yours truly, electric guitars by James Mahmoud. Words and music written by me.

The Journey

This soundtrack was for the final sequence of the film 'Beatrix Potter - The Early Years,' produced & filmed by Martin Patmore at the dawn of his highly distinguished filming career at the BBC.
I conducted - but not very well :) Had to abandon using a chopstick as a baton because I kept hitting the microphone with it!
Incidentally, I composed & notated this piece on the morning of my wedding. The sound track was recorded the next day. I fulfilled this commission only just in the nick of time!

Again and again I have to painfully observe that women who want to live their own potentials, their autonomy, their creativity or other strengths, are discriminated against in a concealed or sometimes blatant way. In spite of the important feminist-emancipatory movements, especially in the last 50 years, in many areas of life the classical division of roles - men make the rational, women the emotional labor - still exists. Women who want to free themselves from these rigid role attributions are no longer burned at the stake, as they were in the Middle Age (and some women into the late 19th century!). However, they are often “removed” verbally or physically in other, more perfidious ways. 
This song is a blazing plea for a really profound change in social conditions, which not only offer a few exceptions, but basically women the possibility to find their own autonomous strength.     
And it is also a song for my wife, who is a very strong woman and who is repeatedly attacked for her courage, clarity, inventiveness and assertiveness. 
And it is my deep musical bow to Hypatia of Alexandria, Hildegard von Bingen, Émilie du Châtelet, Mary Wollstonecraft, Simone Weil, Harriet Taylor Mill, Hannah Arendt, Simone de Beauvoir, Donna Haraway, Judith Butler and other great thinkers for achieving the goal of "equality and dignity for all people".

More and more people are complaining about sleep disorders. Perhaps it is because the world is becoming more and more complex and confusing; that continuous support and security in loving relationships or in safe places is becoming increasingly rare. 
This lullaby is an attempt to create a trance-like, devotional atmosphere, which is a prerequisite for slipping into a deep, restful sleep. In all steps - from composing to mixing - I have always imagined holding a fearful, troubled child in my arms and carefully lulling it until it falls asleep again.
And it is a now almost universally accepted knowledge of sleep psychology that deep, restful sleep is based on trusting inner bonding: An inner loving parent accompanies the inner child so empathetically that it can devote itself completely to a pleasant sleep.
For me, French is the language that is best suited to lead someone who lies awake at night to sleep (again) with appropriate tender words.

No Secrets - Take 5

Started more seriously in music composition in the mid-1960s with a couple of commissions for documentary film music (one shown on BBC TV), but got married and chickened out of the scene to buy food occasionally. After this, I composed away while 9 to 5 took me to lots of interesting non-musical places. Nowadays I just do spots, write, & facilitate at a small Writers' Group. (My handbook, "New Authors Start Here," uses my Pen Name Godffrey Greatorex.) Musically, I went for tunes that, hopefully, stay in the mind. Some say my 'unmannered' vocals appeal rather more than my playing. They must be right, for my playing is very underwhelming. But I do like that it seems I have some sort of melodic flair which has brought original works to share from time to time.
