PEACEMAKERS
I can hear the pinprick, I can hear the razor blade
I can hear the sound of a life laid down like a prayer
I can feel the rumble of war pressing up against all of our hearts
And I share the fear that somehow all of this will be taken away

Blessed be the journalists who pen the truth no matter what the cost
Blessed are the ones who stand up to those who take a stick to the flock
Blessed be the firemen that put out the flames that around us roar
And blessed be the peacemakers in a time of endless war

here is an excerpt from my first show using a two-track tape machine as an in-line distortion/delay/modulation effect. It was recorded on a handheld recorder at Studio Z in Lowertown, so you can hear the dry instruments in the room as well.

Thanks to my roommate/bandmate Derek Rohlf for playing violin on it.

they arrested the dawn and are interrogating the day (for whom they say) hope is almost gone
morning wanders lost in the wastelands of south lebanon
evening is in hiding, afternoon's corspe lies on the ground still warm
meanwhile night prepares to hunt down and kill your firstborn

land of the shadow
nation of the valley wall
teaching all that can't be killed
the tendency to crawl

ra'id walks the path of shame and discontent
expecting no relief from his cia-trained puppet government
he told me how he cried the last time he visited his father and his mother
when asked the reason for his generation's paralysis by his youngest brother

They're arresting the panthers, the eagles and the hawks
they're marching out at gunpoint all those that can walk
those that can't are left behind to face the brightness in her eyes
a glow they've toiled and strived for fifty years to hide

sometimes it feels like it's all just skimming stones on the water
peoples colliding and colliding with reality before sinking without trace
and should the children ever dare to ask the man the question
the answer for their searching eyes is federal laboratories mace

hold it down, hold it down, make sure you tie it well
'cause you wouldn't want what's inside to disturb you in your hell
do your eyes everywhere really not tell you what they see?

i can't take my eyes away from the sky.
it started one dawn in pipestone,
i was walking in the milky light when two birds flew by.
i knew who they were supposed to be
i was waiting for the 'why?'
when the spirit knelt and whispered,
"see how both of you will fly."
some say when two walk side by side 
they lock themselves in a cage tied to the ground
but these two birds - alive - 
possessed a burning joy that silenced all such sound.
and they wheeled and danced and soared
making gravity a lie.
in the car crash of this world 
decided that despair must die.
see how both of you will fly.

i've come to understand that a symbol's power
can keep you alive when it's darkest night.
i've stood in crowds, on mountaintops
seen them set on fire by light
but mostly kind of whispered 
like leather on a knife
gifts of hope to wait on
and watch play out into life
such as:
see how both of you will fly.

sometimes when you think a symbol's time has come
two birds fly past again.
it's the same word, perhaps a different verb
given a new spin.
and one day when you're wondering 
if the sentence ever ends
you see/hear/feel the click 
and it blossoms like the smile of a friend.
see how both of you will fly.

will you believe as i believe
that magic need never end?
that everything that's broken
one day we will see mend?
as the unseen brings new life each morning
and the river makes the desert sigh
I heard the spirit whisper,
