Producer/DJ Andreas. is a record collector and employee of the Sydney based Something Else Records store. Being surrounded by endless crates of hazy house and subtle techno has provided him with a wealth of influences that he wields with precision. Leaning often towards the deep and dubby but always remaining forward and functional, Andrea's Djing is well rounded. For this podcast, he has delved into his record collection to deliver a special wax-only mix for your ears!

"I've always dug podcasts that you can put on and just forget that it's on. These usually end up being live recordings, but there are definitely dj's who can select music at home, and make it flow in the same way it would with a breathing audience in front of you. People like Carsten Jost and Yone-Ko consistently put out selections of music that could easily soundtrack a long drive, a rainy Sunday, or a club night, and that's essentially what I've gone for here."

Nightime Drama Podcast 019 - Andreas.

After a lengthy hiatus, we have released the 20th edition of our podcast series, featuring Nightime Drama’s, Trinity!

This one-hour mix encapsulates Trinity’s style of deep, hypnotic, hard techno, from a selection of both new and unreleased material.

Trinity is a DJ, live performer and producer based in Eora/Sydney.  Now celebrating her 20th year in the music industry, Trinity has earned the respect and love of fans, dancers and peers from Sydney to Berlin — and many destinations in between. Her abundant and diverse talents, her famous work ethic, and her uncompromising musical vision have made her a force to be reckoned with in the world of techno.

Trinity was billed alongside Richie Hawtin at the Vivid Sydney festival at Sydney Opera House; headlined Sydney’s world-famous Mardi Gras celebration; and has played at Tresor, Tomorrowland and many other clubs and festivals across Europe. Other stops on her musical travels have included New Zealand, India and Amsterdam’s famed Red Light Radio.

Each of Trinity’s live shows is marked by her unique versatility: from deep dub-techno, acid and electro to peak-time techno — all combining for a distinct and moving soundscape. Trinity is also one-half of boundary-breaking live act Phax Machine (along with partner Analogue Resistance), with the duo focusing especially on tougher breakbeat and classic rave sounds. 

Trinity’s recorded output includes collaborations with Luke Hess, Eric Cloutier, Headless Horseman and XDB, with her releases making their way into some of the best record shops in the world including Berlin’s Hard Wax. Trinity also runs A&R for the Australian techno label Nightime Drama.

After taking a break from DJing and performing during the pandemic to focus on running her business and parenting, Trinity is back — with a focus on quality over quantity and the same dedication and musical integrity as ever.

The roots of this musical odyssey trace back 23 years to a high school moment when the legendary Jeff Mills' 'I Love Techno 1999' set resonated through a Walkman, introducing a sound that felt both alien and captivating.

Delving deep into the realms of house and techno, Surgeon's groundbreaking 'Force + Form' album and the eclectic sets by Dylan Drazen played a pivotal role in shaping Stroef's musical identity. However, it was the underrated brilliance of Claude Young, showcased in tracks like 'Rise,' 'Mara,' and 'Samba,' that left an indelible mark on his production style.

Versatility is the heartbeat of Stroef's mixes and productions—whether crafting Detroit-styled mixes, dub excursions, or acid-infused journeys. Yet, at the core, Detroit techno remains the heartbeat of his artistic expression.

As the helmsman of Boomstraat 1818, Stroef enjoys the liberty of curating releases from artists he admires. From the immersive sounds of Kuba Sojka to the soulful depths of Taho, each release on the label echoes the warm vibes of Detroit techno.

Stefan Vincent, a musical mentor and longtime friend of Stroef, guided him to Nightime Drama through a podcast for the label. Vincent's technical prowess and collaborative efforts have left an indelible mark on Stroef.

This mix is a captivating fusion of early '90s gems, unreleased productions by Stroef on Diffuse Reality, an acid journey with the Devoran alter ego, and timeless classics from UR.

Since the mid 90’s, Owen Jay has been one of the main contributors to the development of underground music culture in Malta; as a DJ, producer, event promoter & label owner.

His attraction to electronic music blossomed in the early 90's, leading him to the Detroit sounds of UR, Metroplex & Peacefrog Records. Unavoidably, his dj sets feature a blend of Detroit, NY & Chicago house and techno.

During the last decade Owen Jay’s sound has gradually evolved, however, it is the alternative and distinct sound which sets him apart from the mainstream, earning himself appearances at renowned events and venues including Panorama Bar & Tresor, as well as many others.

Owen Jay has released many records under Underground Quality, Deep Explorer, Minuendo, Moods & Grooves (Detroit), Contrast Wax, Housewax and his own Batti Batti Label. Owen also releases under the moniker Gauss, a project in collaboration with Natan H (LA).

Read on for some insights from Owen Jay in this exclusive interview;

1) Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I am an early bird, normally waking up around 6.30am unless I was out the previous night. For Gauss, a  project together with Natan H, I used to work on tracks at night between 3 to 6 am, since it is more peaceful for me and it works best for Natan due to time difference as it is evening in L.A..  

2) What is your home city and what makes it special?

My home town is Mosta in Malta, located in the centre of the island and the main attraction is a church with the third largest unsupported dome in the world. I am not into churches but its really an amazing building and it was all built by hand.

3) The term DJ's DJ gets thrown around a lot these days, who is your DJ's DJ?

In that respect, my fav DJ's are Jay Daniel (Detroit), XDB (Metrolux), Dam Funk (Stones Throw), Lawrence (Dial) and Matt Pond (Deepsystems.

4) What first comes to mind when you think of electronic music in Australia?

Australia to me is :

Marcellus, a good friend of mine and a Dj based in Melbourne. I am sure he is doing a good thing when it comes to disco and related music.

Ewan Jansen since we both have releases on Moods & Grooves and Inner Shift Music, plus I followed his label Red Ember from the start.

In recent years Albrecht La'Brooy since I love their peaceful atmospheres, deep house and dub injected productions 

Nightime Drama Label since they release quality club tracks and bring together many artists which I love; Luke Hess, Eric Cloutier, Trinity & Steve Tang.

5) What has been the stand out track that you've playing this month?

I will mention a few tracks actually.

If I had to choose one it has to be the electro track from Kiddmisha - Healing taken from  Palette EP (BBR15) which I also included on my mix. I might be biased since it my own label but i really like it and its the first electro track on the label.

A deep techno track from Fluxion titled 'The Meeting' from the album Ripple Effect.  I love this album, I feel it is outstanding with it's cinematic feel and depth. It was actually released earlier this year but only discovered it recently. Love playing it since it gives a sense of mystery and suspense but needs to be done with attention depending on the venue and atmosphere. 

A forthcoming compilation on Verdant Recordings. It includes Stojche, Life Recorder, Subsequent, Bluetrain, Gauss , XDB and more, its an outstanding compilation for sure.

DemoDc would be best described as a story-teller. Channelling energy from the unknown, he mould's his stories into electronic music with a conscious effort to stabilise earth's imbalance.

For our 18th Nightime Drama podcast, we are proud to present Sydney based DJ/Producer and NTD resident Oscar.Mike

Oscar.Mike has been steadily carving out a name for himself over the last few years, having performed under a number of aliases drawing inspiration from a diverse range of sounds and genres. Oscar is an avid record collector with an expansive collection of techno, house, breaks and dub, who can always maintain an accessibility that ensures he is able to connect with the dance floor.

This versatility has seen him become a trusted choice for promoters to support acts like Shlomo, Deadbeat, Batu and Pearson Sound in years past. Having also turned his hand to production, we released Oscar’s first digital EP where it gained the attention of Claude Young, Luigi Tozzi, Benjamin Damage, and many others.
