Music for Frequencies of Tradition film screenings at The Roxie

Wednesday, May 18, 6:15 - 6:45 pm (preceding 6:45pm screenings)
 Location: Little Roxie Theatre, 3117 16th Street, San Francisco, CA 94103
Each monthly screening of Frequencies of Tradition is preceded by original music and a sound mix curated by Topazu (Infinite Beat – San Francisco), with the participation of Annie Chen (Teaphile, Zhuang B – Oakland), Nihar (Left Hand Path, TVOD – San Francisco), and Aaron J (Sure Thing – Boston). The sonic environment anticipates five films, in conjunction with the exhibition Frequencies of Tradition, on view at KADIST San Francisco (April 2 - July 16, 2022).

Nihar Bhatt is a South-Asian American experimentalist, musician and sound designer based in San Francisco, CA. His work contributes to the modern re-invention of the "industrial music" category within a non-eurocentric and consistently anti-capitalist framework. Utilizing a combination of generative, interactive and linear sequencing methods executed through a hybrid digital-analogue setup with modular hardware at its center, Nihar often mixes the sounds and rhythms of the 21st century global supply chain with textures that evoke the dissociative, isolating and depressive effects of neo-liberal culture. The music also lingers on the romance and ecstasy of intimate connection, the virtue of rejecting professionalization and work, as well as the possibility of collective confrontation with power, forming counterpoints to a fundamentally bleak vision of our times.

Nihar has been a beloved figure in the Bay Area Music Scene for over a decade. He was a founder & DJ at the now legendary Surface Tension events which helped to solidify cold wave & dark industrial techno as a defining sound in San Francisco club culture. Left Hand Path, the label he started with Chris Zaldua in 2015 have released some of the most interesting & diverse projects to come out of the city, from the likes of Cube, C.L.A.W.S., Nackt, Russell E.L. Butler & Forests. 
Squirrels On Film is delighted & honored to unleash this collection of angular cybergoth soundscapes that showcase Nihar's acuity as an artist. Five-dimensional geometric rhythms & nocturnal panoramas evoking brutalist structures & primeval geology present an alternative reality for industrial techno. This collection has been mastered by San Francisco industrial O.G. Mark Pistal & presented with original art by Squirrel On Film resident artist Bert Bergen.

Helena Hauff et Umwelt se connaissent bien. La hambourgeoise est en effet l’une des signatures du label Rave or Die dont le fondateur n’est autre que…  Umwelt. Il faut dire que les deux producteurs ont tout pour s’entendre. Ils partagent en effet un goût prononcé pour une techno brute, sombre et glaciale.

Autre point commun, Helena Hauff et Umwelt sont chacun à la tête d’un ou plusieurs labels : Return to Disorder pour elle, New Flesh, Shelter, Fundata et donc Rave or Die pour lui. Une manière pour ces deux jusqu’au-boutistes d’éviter les concessions, d’évoluer au rythme de leurs envies dans les méandres de l’underground. Entre noirceur et complicité, ce versus franco-allemand s’annonce donc sous les meilleurs auspices !

How would you describe your music policy?

Mutual Dreaming has always been about obsessions of mine, the weirder music, and outlier artists. Its been all over the place from PPU boogie parties, DJ Stingray's NYC debut, Dr Rubinstein, etc, always with a similar spirit of playfulness. I'm never wanting anything standard or genre-abiding.  I saw the fliers and artist choices as a bat signal for people open to that.  Besides the guests, one of its goals has been giving local artists a proper stage, proper sound, and seeing that talent really flex & develop.

What makes a great party? 

A great party is a very elusive thing, only possible when all the details come together and form a collective unconscious that's bigger than any one element.  You can just feel it in the air, everything's churning deeper and feels unstoppable, and that's when personal transformation is possible. You can't always predict when it will happen. As an organizer I think you can help get it there by setting some things in motion, but after that it just unfolds on its own.

What does your party stand for, and how do you express that? 

I have a few half-joking mottos. 'Strictly for the freaks' is something my friend Max D said years ago. Coming from a very conformist city, DC, that has meant the music lovers & friends that you really had to work to find. In my dream world it would be full of people in crazy outfits, but to me freak means something more like a believer in underground culture, and that doesn't necessarily look cool.  The other motto is 'DIY the only way to fly.' Meaning: no sponsorship, nobody else producing it, no need for commercial success, all my projects are meant as a transmission from my imagination. This is really important to me.

 What’s the greatest problem facing club culture in your city? 

Dancing is technically illegal except for a few commercial clubs, so the nightlife I've been interested in has mostly been underground  in lofts and random spaces. There's always a risk of getting shut down, losing tons of money, and the safety and exits can be sketchy.  In recent years especially since the Oakland fire, I have been extra cautious and turned to more legal places, but I'm going back to the underground spots again.  Has to be that way if your tying to catch that feeling of a special space for one night only. Another problem is bros and finance people ruining the vibe, groping girls, etc. Occasionally I'll get discouraged, worrying it will never be the same, but you just have to keep pushing further into your zone and outrunning them.

What’s your favorite memory of the night?

After 7 years its difficult to pick a favorite but I guess I can think of a turning point. 2013, before Sustain-Release started, I had stepped back after a few unsuccessful nights and wondered the way forward if I would continue. I found an incredible loft with lots of strange rooms, and organized a party with new label at the time, White Material vs Vereker. The owner of the space was a weirdo, but as the hours got closer, it became apparent that he was never going to turn on the electricity. I googled him and realized he was an actual scam artist. The truck showed up with the soundsystem and it was now or never, so I called my old space 285 Kent which had ended its 4 year run the night before, so it was open and available for one last party. We roll up to find the toilets had exploded, and there's disgusting chunky brown water covering the entire floor.. we're mopping, and frantically setting up a huge parachute installation on the ceiling, and then the fog machine breaks. But after all that chaos, the result was absolutely pulsing with life force energy. It looked and sounded the best it ever had so far, the music felt new, and I glimpsed the power and potential of our scene, and since then the parties seemed more potent, focused and magic.

The opening of the 27th Chapter sees the revelation of Scottish artist Kieran Apter’s sophomore ‘All I Want’ EP, featuring Editions from Aera (Innervisions, Hivern Discs) and Manuel Tur (Innervisions, Freerange).

Newcomer Kieran is hotly tipped for success, having come to the attention of some of the best artists in the scene as head honcho and resident DJ for Edinburgh house and techno party ‘Tweak_’.

Opener ‘All I Want’ is a standout composition, featuring the vocals of singer/producer and Nicolas Jaar collaborator Leon Power. It is followed up by the instrumental ‘Elle’ which, more arpeggio-driven, shares the same spiritual feel and electronic soul as the title track.

The Editions on the EP are worthy of the original material. Between them, Aera and Manuel Tur have amassed classic releases on labels as seminal and worthy of reference as Innervisions, Hivern Discs, Freerange and Running Back.

Aera’s Edition blends afro techno, chopped vocals and a beguiling synth sequence to winning effect, in a version heavy on dark drama.

Meanwhile, Manuel Tur turns in two versions, both equally stunning. The first is driving and twisted; the most dancefloor-oriented track on the EP. Meanwhile the second makes the very most of the original’s vocals, placing the focus on live instrumentation and a disco groove.

A stunning and versatile package, we are proud to be a part of launching Kieran Apter's artist career and are excited for what's to come.

Two club focused tracks from the archives of the San Francisco based artist, writer, and community organizer. Nihar has been instrumental in carving out space for parties that tow the line of function and experimentation on the west coast of the United States as co-founder of the SURFACE TENSION party series. Along with Chris Zaldua, Nihar also runs the Left Hand Path label, highlighting electronic anomalies and documenting challenging work in his locale. Nihar has performed worldwide in Shanghai, Osaka, and Mexico City and has been programmed into the Recombinant and Mutek festivals.

On this single sided 12", "Rumble" centers Tabla rhythms amidst syncopated and undulating drum and synth work for an uptempo club affect. "Vermillion Garden" slows things down with a more throbbing groove that uses vocal synthesis to oscillate in and out of sweaty-wall atmospherics. The record is accompanied by a text titled "Against Having a Music Industry; For a Renegade Future", an essay at once taking inventory, and leaving room for hope, amidst the perplexing times for electronic music that this record presents itself inside of.

Visions: A Benefit Compilation for Artsakh is a compilation album with music from a wide range of electronic and dance music artists from the West Coast, East Coast, and beyond.

The album is produced by a community of artists with the intention to raise funds for the recent displacement and violence towards 100,000+ Armenians from the Republic of Artsakh (also known as Nagorno-Karabakh) - a de facto self-governed autonomous region with an Armenian population indigenous to Artsakh. The displaced families and those who have no other option but to return to their war-torn towns are in need of housing, medical, psychiatric support, food, and basic essentials.

*This is an indigenous struggle, and as ethnic-supremacist ideologies are on the rise across the world, we wanted to have a project that stands in solidarity with indigenous people’s right to self-determination and existence, and help from here in a small way.

On September 27, 2020, a large-scale military offensive was unprovokedly launched against the Republic of Artsakh and Armenia by the authoritarian regime of Azerbaijan, backed by Turkey. Armenian civilians, settlements, and civilian infrastructures including schools and churches were continuously bombarded for 45 days with drones, aerial attacks, internationally outlawed cluster bombs and white phosphorus munitions. Several thousands of lives were lost, hundreds still in captivity, and over a hundred thousand Armenians displaced after 70% of Artsakh’s territories were taken away. Currently, ancient Armenian historical, religious, and cultural sites in Artsakh are being destroyed, contributing to the years of cultural genocide by Azerbaijan’s petro-oligarchic regime. This is an indigenous struggle, and as ethnic-supremacist ideologies are on the rise across the world, we stand in solidarity with indigenous people’s right to self-determination and existence.
