كانت قاعة الامتحان في مدرسة تومويكو الإعدادية مليئة بتوتر مختلف قليلاً عن المعتاد. وليس من المستغرب—ففي هذه المدرسة، يخضع الطلاب للامتحانات في أزواج، وتكون النتيجة، نجاحاً أو رسوباً، مشتركة بينهم. هذا النظام الفريد خلق روابط وضغوطاً أقوى من أي وقت مضى بين الممتحَنين.

ومن بينهم، لفت زوج من التوائم الانتباه بشكل خاص. كان هاروتو وكانون متشابهين في البنية، لكن تعابيرهما وأجواؤهما كانت متناقضة تماماً.

هاروتو عقد ذراعيه بابتسامة واثقة وقال:
«امتحان ثنائي؟ هذا سهل بالنسبة لنا. حتى لو أخطأتِ، سأغطي عنك.»

كانون عبست بقلق وهمست نحو مكتبها:
«…ماذا لو سببت لك الفشل؟ أنت لست مثالياً أيضاً يا هاروتو.»

ابتسم المراقب عند سماع حديثهما وقال:
«كونكما توأمين لا يعني أنكما دائماً في انسجام كامل. المهم هو الثقة المتبادلة.»

بدأ الامتحان. كان الموضوع مشكلة نقاش ثنائي: على الاثنين أن يتحدثا معاً ويستنتجا إجابة للمهمة المعطاة. وكانت المهمة: «إذا أردتما إنشاء ملعب جديد، فما هو أفضل مفهوم؟»

بدأ هاروتو بحماس:
«منطقة رياضية ستكون رائعة! أريد أن أبني ملعب كرة سلة يمكن للجميع اللعب فيه.»

ترددت كانون لحظة، ثم قالت بعزم:
«لكن الأطفال الصغار أو الذين لا يجيدون الرياضة يحتاجون أيضاً إلى مكان، أليس كذلك؟ زاوية للرسم أو قراءة الكتب ستكون جميلة…»

«هذا يبدو بسيطاً جداً! إنه ملعب!» رفع هاروتو صوته.

«…إذن فلنفكر معاً. ملعب يمكن أن تكون فيه نشيطاً، وأيضاً مكان تقضي فيه وقتاً بهدوء—كيف يمكننا تصميم ذلك؟» قالت كانون بجدية.

صمت هاروتو للحظة، ثم تمتم:
«تعلمين… مكان كهذا قد يكون جيداً. ربما أذهب إليه أحياناً أيضاً.»

جادل التوأمان حتى اللحظة الأخيرة، وأخيراً قدما هذا الاقتراح:
«‘ملعب الحركة والسكون’—مكان يمكنك فيه تحريك جسدك باستخدام المعدات والملعب، بينما في منطقة أخرى يمكنك الاستمتاع بالفن والموسيقى. تفصل الجدران الشفافة بين المناطق، بحيث يمكنكم مشاهدة بعضكم البعض واكتشاف اهتمامات جديدة.»

بعد الامتحان، قال هاروتو بهدوء لكانون:
«فكرتك لم تكن سيئة على الإطلاق.»

ابتسمت كانون وأجابت:
«استطعت أن أقول ما أردت لأنك كنت معي.»

في يوم إعلان النتائج، فتح الاثنان الظرف معاً. بداخله كانت كلمة «ناجح».

«نحن حقاً أقوى ثنائي!» ضحك هاروتو.
وأومأت كانون بابتسامة لطيفة وقالت:
«نعم، من الآن فصاعداً أيضاً.»
