All About :: The Art of Collage & Rhetorical Velocity

I am specifically interested in situations where composers anticipate and strategize future third-party remixing of their compositions as part of a larger and complex rhetorical strategy that plays out across physical and digital spaces. We find this type of thinking—the asking of “how might the text be rewritten?” and “why, where, and for whom might this text be rewritten?”—an increasingly important set of questions in a digital age characterized, for instance, by swift, easy, and deep web searching and by copying and pasting practices. 

COLLAGE ::  Artistic compositions of materials and objects pasted and/or sewn/woven over and through surfaces, often with unifying and/or juxtaposing structures, lines, colors, themes in order to create textured, alive, amplified spaces. 

SYNTHESIS (AKA Mashup): Creating Compelling Texts comprised of borrowed, reconstituted, and original material.

Piazza Media is an entertainment business agency, running a group of independent labels, the promotion/marketing division DIGITAL MINDS (Online-Markting/Social Media /Influencer Marketing / Blog Promotion / radio promotion / playlist pitching), the merchandising division MERCHPLUS, the management division TALENTS FIRST and is beside this active in the field of international music licensing & exploitation.

Nili Fossae is a group of large, concentric trenches on Mars, located at approximately 22°N, 75°E. It is also the collaboration between UK-based multi-instrumentalists and composers Pete Sené and Martin Roberts.

Sené and Roberts met while touring with different bands in 2017, sharing an inherent interest in each others live setup. With Sené's work for Everything Everything, and solo project Lessening; and Roberts' career with German electronic act Schiller, and band Aelius, it was clear they had similar styles in composition and sound design. When the world stood still in May 2020, the two decided to use the time to collaborate on an EP inspired by artists they loved; Jon Hopkins, Nils Frahm, and Olafur Arnalds to name a few.

‘Into The Blue’, Nili Fossae's first complete body of work, is an exploration of Ambient Electronica, Post-Classical, and everything in between; focussing on tone and texture over traditional musical structure. The EP was written remotely, with Sené and Roberts composing and drafting arrangements in their respective home studios, before building upon the bare-bone ideas with additional synths and production.

With their collective careers in live music spanning over two decades, it is only a matter of time before Nili Fossae make their debut live appearance; where their synth-heavy aesthetic will forge the landscape of their Martian namesake.
