This reading is all about how Socrates is on trial for acting like an ass and proceeds to act like an ass and so is convicted. Big surprise. On this our inaugural discussion, Mark, Seth, and Wes talk about how philosophers are arrogant bastards who neglect their children, how people of all political stripes don’t usually examine their fundamental beliefs (but probably should), why it might be better to know you know nothing than to only think that you know nothing, and how Plato was a super genius all of whose texts you should worship uncritically. The Unexamined Life pt 1 - Partially Examined Life

Mother Me is the first studio single by Welsh-English musician Nina Jones. Addressed to her two young girls, the song is an emotionally raw expression of the protective, hopeful love a mother has for her children. 

Sometimes my heart feels like a bow, 
Stretched to its limits, 
I guess that makes my love like an arrow that flies 
You won’t ever really know 
How it feels to love you 
Imagine all your organs  
On the outside… 

Nina says “the song is my attempt to capture the contradictions of loving your children. You want to hold them, to keep them as they are – but also to let them grow. 
“I feel like this kind of love is not well represented in music, historically or in the present day, and I want to give a voice to these intense feelings that mothers everywhere have.” 
The song has had excellent reception at live shows in Liverpool, Lancaster, and online at International Women’s Day events during lockdown. It was produced by Garvan Cosgrove in Liverpool.  
The single is from the Mother Me EP a selection of joyful, honest and emotive songs about the experiences of womanhood and maturity, due out in May. This will be the sequel to her self-released album Maiden, which was about Nina’s experience of urban life in her 20s.  
Formally a lead singer with Liverpool band The Grand Architects, Nina has performed and recorded with China Crisis, Edgar Jones and John Smith. In 2016, Nina survived brain surgery and lost her hearing in one ear. This later work reveals a more mature, emotionally complex persona, with songs themed around later life, survival and resilience. Nina was born in Warrington, and lives in Lancaster.
