The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

We stretch out in hour 2 with a mix from Leftside Wobble. We usually shy away from mixes of one genre and one record label, but when we're talking about the legendary Trax Records who are celebrating 25 years, we make an exception. Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton have put together a selection of classic house from Trax Records that are lovingly remixed, including music from Mr Fingers, Frankie Knuckles and Jack Frost.

DK continues with future styles of what started 25 years ago as house music. Keeping it deep with J Alexander, Midland, Ph0t0machine and Carl Craig doing his own edit on a bootleg of his classic 'The Climax', plus more from the Jamie XX reworks of Gil Scott-Heron and early material from the man himself to close the show.

This is probably my favourite of the Acid Soul series so far. Featuring a selection of deep, dirty groovers from recent months, with a smattering of classics for good measure too. Thanks must go out to the fine folks of the DJ History forum for prompting me to dig out Maurice Fulton's mix of Alice Smith - forgot just how good that record is.

Acid Soul 8

Over the last couple of years a number of producers have emerged that have captured the spirit of that original Chicago House sound from back in the day; a time when house music wore it's disco influences firmly on it's sleeve. Producers such as Neville Watson, Kink, Hard Ton, Snuff Crew &amp; Shiny Objekts (to name a few) manage to create music that's deep and raw yet still oozes funk and soul.

The 'Acid Soul' series of mixes celebrate this sound and this latest instalment features a bunch of stuff I've been playing in my peak time sets in recent months (including the Carnival after party a few weeks back). It wouldn't be a Leftside Wobble set though without a smattering of edits too, and this features some killer versions of Marvin Gaye and Steve Winwood classics as well as my own recent spin on 'Could Heaven Ever Be Like This'.
