Every clique needs a secret weapon.

Scottish label LuckyMe might officially be a big deal these days, with Cashmere Cat and Baaeur infiltrating pop music, Hudson Mohawke going from bedroom Just Blaze disciple to one of Kanye's right hand men, and Lunice and Eclair Fifi becoming two of electronic music's favourite live acts and DJs, respectively, but S-Type is as good as anyone on the roster.

After a couple of under-the-radar records (the first released on his older brother Tommy's label in 2005), S-Type made his first real impact with Billboard, a six-track EP of widescreen hip-hop beats, oversexed funk and, in 'You Da Best', a closer that's about as sweet as instrumental hip-hop gets when it's 150bpm with a hundred snares a minute.

Two more records on LuckyMe followed: Rosario combined more undeniable melodies with guest spots from Roc Marciano, YC the Cynic and Rustie, while SV8 saw him team up with Lunice, Inkke and Yung Gud for no frills club music. S-Type's biggest collaboration, however, came with Hud Mo on The Rap Monument, a 36-minute rap song featuring Young Thug, Pusha T, Raekwon and a whole lot more. It took the idea of a posse cut to whole new levels, proved that branded content doesn't need to suck and was generally pretty damn impressive.

We've been badgering S-Type for a mix for a good couple of years now, and it's pure coincidence that it's ended up number 500 - but it also feels kinda fitting. There's few people working at his level, but S-Type doesn't always get the props he deserves - the sort of artist we've tried to champion since the start.

Hudson Mohawke Mix

Ensemble Entendu is the collaborative project of Astro Nautico co-founder and co-owner Sam O.B. (f.k.a. Obey City) and label artist Photay. 

Since July 2014, inspired by back-to-back deejay sets at Astro Nautico parties and around New York, O.B. and Photay have been linking their individual production styles between Brooklyn studios in order to create a form dance music that centralizes the timeless power of the drum. 

With a track entitled ‘Cause ‘N’ Effect,’ the oldest (c. 2014) collected on the Ensemble’s debut release Selected Rhythm Works, Vol. 1, the duo raises the question: who in this collaboration is causing what effect on whom? There are rhythmic and melodic idiosyncrasies of both artists present on each track. Footprints stepping in footprints. And beyond or behind the artists are the sound signatures of house music, new jack, African polyrhythm, dub reggae, ‘80s prog (roto toms!), P-funk, dancehall, and much more. This flurry of styles stitches a Trans-Atlantic tapestry of drumming across generations and seas, with a center nowhere but the dance floor. 

Ensemble Entendu’s debut is sampling notions of library music and rhythm tracks. The duo’s name refers to deju entendu, the psychic phenomenon that occurs when you hear something you think you’ve heard before, even though the sound may be being heard for the first time. Selected Rhythm Works, Vol. 1 (a nominal reference to Aphex Twin) loosens the threads of connection between then and now and tomorrow, allowing listeners to weave their own journeys in historical time through body movement.
