Solid Steel Radio Show 8/11/2013 Part 1 + 2 - Mr Armtone - Time Machine II

Solid Steel (27th December) 2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year in style, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's, with huge prizes up for grabs.

The guest mix you chose as your favourite from the last 25 years was Bonobo with his 'Directors Cut mix' of his Solid Steel Mix CD release "It came from the Sea", which was first broadcast on the 9th December 2005. It's his 2 hour version of the mix featuring tracks that didn't make the final cut including his own edit of Gang of Four and the brilliant Four Tet edit of Black Unity by Pharoah Saunders.

Up next it's your favourite mix from DK which was his 'Cymatic Frequencies' mix from the 21st January 2011. This was also his first solo AV mix and was packed full of musical highlights from 2010 and can be viewed here http://vimeo.com/19005861 Joy Orbison, Ramadanman and Maddslinky remixed by Toddla T all feature, alongside a Ninja Trio and a Big Dada double, plus James Blake, Caribou and Bassnectar.

Solid Steel Radio Show 27/12/2013 Part 1 + 2 - Bonobo + DK

DJ Food & DK with the audio part of their "Now, Look & Listen" video mix, that they perform live on 4 decks and 3 mixers. Check out the <a href="http://www.solidsteel.net">Solid Steel</a> website or the 'Track video' button above, for the full video mix. 
Using Serato's Video-SL plug-in for Scratch Live, they mix, scratch and blend the sound AND vision for each track they play. Months were spent creating videos for each piece of music, either using the original source material or, in most cases sampling footage to create a new video entirely. Described as 'Video Turntablism', it has become a way for Food & DK to visualize their already legendary DJ sets. 
As usual, it's the diverse mix of music that they love and are known for, taking in current faves from Foreign Beggars & Noisia, Joy Orbison and Dorian Concept, but also plenty of classics that have kept dancefloors rocking from TTC, Pendulum, Luke Vibert, Think Tank and Z-Trip. Plus, Grace Jones, Archie Bell and sections from their two highly successful mix CD's that have Rakim rapping alongside the Human League and the Beat battling the drum and bass of Mask, and all in glorious video at the <a href="http://www.solidsteel.net">Solid Steel</a> website.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (20th November) It's another epic Video Mix from Armtone in Hr 1. More bespoke visuals alongside original videos for a 90 minute AV mixtape. This time it's titled 'RΣmotions' and starts with Paul White's outing on R & S Records and into the excellent 'Cirrus' video by Cyriak for Bonobo. Then it's African flavours from Nigerian synth pioneer William Onyeabor, Owiny Sigoma Band and Clap! 'This is a Journey into Beats 'n' Frames' famously riffs off of two classic Coldcut trademarks and checks the render setting to 'highest'. St. Petersburg's Mr Armtone becomes only the second person to have a guest AV mix on Solid Steel, supplying a packed hour with his trademark tight mixes and equally syncopated imagery . Each video has undergone his own edits, remixes and tweaks and the quality is top notch throughout. It features music and visuals from the Ninja Tune stable with Daedelus, Hexstatic, Diplo, DJ Kentaro and Coldcut all making an appearance, plus more from Tipper, Ian Brown and the Pixies remixed by Bassnectar.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (12th October) Mr Armtone returns with his latest AV mix titled 'Time Machine' which expertly travels through a quality selection of visuals and audio. As usual with Solid Steel video mixes, it's not just a collection of music videos, it's also about selecting exciting visuals to match the audio and to edit into a well crafted video mixtape. We open with hip hop and beats from The Chemical Brothers, Haiku D'Etat, Jay Z and Tipper, moving on to our own Coldcut and The Herbaliser and up into TC and Cyantific. Then it's a brief old skool trip with Sir Mix-A-Lot and back again with Dizzie Rascal, Benga, Silkie and an appearance from Wiley. We close with Hexstatic, the excellent Breakage remix for Roots Manuva and a sublime ending with 'Time Machine' by Chocolate Milk.
