Earlier this year we brought you the news of an innovative new collaboration which pairs two producers with unique perspectives on sound design and music.

Prequel Tapes is best known for his noisy, disjointed approach to techno and the rougher drone inspired fringes of electronica and IDM. He has released music on the likes of Mannequin and R'COUP'D. 

Meanwhile, dBridge remains one of the most innovative figures in UK bass music culture having released cutting edge downtempo, jungle and drum 'n' bass over many decades for the likes of Creative Source, Exit Records and Metalheadz. 

Now the two have collaborated on a new EP for Midnight Shift, a record label which continues to connect generations of well versed music heads through its consistent release of high quality techno, bass and the weirder, heavier fringes of dance music. This new EP pairs two unique, creative minds. The result is a mutant hybrid showcasing the importance of collaboration and innovation. 

Following the release we asked kindly whether the pair might be up for recording a mix together, an alternative insight into their own collections and musical tapestry. The result is an old school mixtape, reel to reel vibes with integrity at its core.

Great back to back to back DJ session on the @dubsmugglers soundsystem at this year's @dimensionsfestival in Croatia, alongside @floatingpoints, Tom Smith from the ace Cosmic Slop night in Leeds, ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/211633616863/ ) all held together by the mighty MC Kwasi. Solid Steel (14th November)  Catching Flies opens the show this week with a lush mix to ease you into the weekend. The London producer already has a few acclaimed EP's and remixes under his belt and supported Bonobo on his European tour this year. His mix opens with Chick Corea, Kazi on Stones Throw, Jon Hopkins and the Moods remix of his track 'Sunrays' from The Stars EP. Then it's into Letherette, Dirg Gerner, Caribou and his beautiful collaboration with Ifan Daffyd, before closing with recent guests Werkha and Maribou State. Solid Steel in association with Serato (13th November) In Hour 2 we welcome Prequel Tapes celebrating the release of his album 'Inner Systems' on the R'COUP'D label run by Fin Greenall from Fink. We hear a track from the album alongside music from the Robert Logan, Shed, Autechre, Clock DVA and SCNTST. He told us;
"I think all music leads us back to our first influences, unwittingly or not. Early experiences are deeply connected with certain moods and feelings - I can’t help feeling that they deepen as we age. Reflections are important. Mirorring the past with the present and being curious of the result when they are put together in a mix. To me it is not important the when, what, how a piece of music was created or released. I am interested in the strength of a composition. How long can it last, how often can it grab your attention. Thank you."

Here is a recording of my set at Far Away in Los Angeles that happened recently. I was the only DJ that night and I played from doors till close. Unfortunately the recording cut out during the night and we are missing the last 90 minutes. There are still the first 4.5 hours here for you to enjoy though.

"Walking around and seeing turtles, flamingos, and just enjoying the tropical climate of Mexico...there's something special about that because I'm from Norway and we just had snow two weeks ago.

This is a mix of my own material, most of the songs are rearranged or edited a little bit to work better in a live set context. I usually select some old songs, some new ones, and some unreleased material, then try different things in the live mix. I don't usually share my live sets because they don't feel as exciting to me after the fact, though they do feel really great when playing live."

@prequeltapes is Marco Freivogel — a producer, DJ, and live performer who shared his story in the “Sound Mind” issue of Borshch published in 2019. On the 3rd of July, Marco’s latest album Ruin came out on Mannequin Records. In Prequel Tapes’ long-held view, “art should challenge, jar, and provoke. Offering the balance of what’s dark and disturbing to appreciate the beauty and the light.”
 
Prequel Tapes recorded his Borshch mix from his vinyl collection, with the magazine in mind all the time. For Marco, it’s connected to the feeling of the “Intrinsic” track from the new album. The mix is intense and gentle at the same time, it’s to listen to and fall into, repeat again, and discover new refinements each time.
