Solid Steel Radio Show 2/8/2013 Part 1 + 2 - DJ Moneyshot

Solid Steel (27th December) 2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year in style, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's, with huge prizes up for grabs.

The guest mix you chose as your favourite from the last 25 years was Bonobo with his 'Directors Cut mix' of his Solid Steel Mix CD release "It came from the Sea", which was first broadcast on the 9th December 2005. It's his 2 hour version of the mix featuring tracks that didn't make the final cut including his own edit of Gang of Four and the brilliant Four Tet edit of Black Unity by Pharoah Saunders.

Up next it's your favourite mix from DK which was his 'Cymatic Frequencies' mix from the 21st January 2011. This was also his first solo AV mix and was packed full of musical highlights from 2010 and can be viewed here http://vimeo.com/19005861 Joy Orbison, Ramadanman and Maddslinky remixed by Toddla T all feature, alongside a Ninja Trio and a Big Dada double, plus James Blake, Caribou and Bassnectar.

In Hour 2, DJ Food continues with the same decade, but takes proceedings overground and compiles an hour of unofficial remixes, re-edits and versions of classic pop songs from the 80's, remodelled by fans or studio engineers with access to the separate track stems. What emerges is a collection of pop classics seen through a distorted looking glass, culled from the darkest corners of Soundcloud or the hard drives of engineers with access to audio they shouldn't have and time on their hands.
Depeche Mode remixed by a Hip Hop engineer, Tears For Fears cut to ribbons by a tape edit king, Bow Wow Wow and The Human League streamlined into a steady disco groove. Grace Jones' 'Slave To The Rhythm' gets three radically different make overs and then she covers Tubeway Army!

"Seconds out, round two. Here come the hotstepper...
You know how the Social story goes. The Chemical Brothers took things to the 'next level', spending thirteen weeks blowing minds & rocking floors in a dank pub basement, mashing up breakbeats, old skool hip hop, acid house & wigged out rock 'n' roll to a crowd of 25 hour party people. The Albany days passed on into Heavenly history, as much a part of the equation as "Nothing Can Stop Us" or "Weekender" & moves were made onwards & upwards. Enter Jon Carter.
Jon Carter entered Social lore at The Albany, not behind the decks, but on the floor (in every sense). Jon was introduced to the club by regular face Mark Jones (the top boy in charge of the excellent Wall Of Sound label, becoming a full time bar fly at The Albany, moving from fresh faced to totally fucked every week. At the time, Jon was a studio engineer, working exclusively on jungle & dance hall tracks. Like so many of us, he got sucked into the whole Social thing - the weekend ends at 6 o'clock on Monday morning, two little birdies down & the biggest headache on the way. The week of the last Albany session, it was all back to someone's had been booted out. Since then, he's been one of the family. He'd made an odd little record for Wall Of Sound ("The Dollar", as Artery) which had the sound of a Social anthem in the making & he'd done a few DJing sessions back at people's houses after the club, blowing up ragga & bogle gear alongside Public Enemy, ZZ Top & The Jam. What was to come next was anyone's guess, which is probably why Heavenly got him on the pay roll.
At this point, Monkey Mafia was born. First came the rock 'n' roll freakbeat fest of "Blow The Whole Joint Up". Secondly, borrowing heavily from dance hall queen Patra, "Work Mi Body" arrived, seeing Jon settle into a groove previously untapped by man or woman. The 'Mafia wildstyle is radically different from the Chemicals (and, in turn, totally different to Mr. Fearless', but that's another compilation all together). The sound is best likened to that of a car full of Ganja'd up yardies driving into a brick wall at 5 o'clock on a Sunday morning while listening to Funkmaster Flex, The Who, The Bassbin Twins & Gregory Isaacs. It's a big summer sound that gets the sun shining, if only in your mind. It's Monday at Notting Hill Carnival, It's party music & it's a party that everyone's welcome to, the "all back to mine, let's wake up the neighbours" kind. It's a sound we've grown to love, like some mad kid you've adopted as one of your own. Much like Jon himself...

Recorded on DAT by Robin Turner.

The jump into Boops at 27.52 is because the DAT was removed in order for Tom and Ed to play music they'd made in the studio that week (instrumental of Life is Sweet often got played around this time). Any record jumps were caused by people banging into the decks, or pogoing! (I'm guilty as charged in Voodoo People). Last record cuts off due to the DAT running out.

Solid Steel (24th May) Following on from last year's treatment of 'Paul's Boutique' (by DJ Food, Cheeba and Moneyshot), United States of Audio does the same with De la Soul's groundbreaking album 3 Feet High and Rising. It's not just a mix, but more like an audio documentary about an album that is also about to celebrate it's 25th anniversary. In his own words;
'Several years in the making and including around 100 tracks, this is my personal tribute to De La Soul's '3 Feet High and Rising'. Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, 'How High's The Water Mama' tells the story of one of hip hop's most influential albums.
When De La Soul's debut album dropped in 1989 I was ten years old. Yet, by some stroke of amazing good fortune a cassette copy of '3 Feet High and Rising' found its way into my hands thanks to my best mate's older brother (though I'm pretty sure said brother had no idea of this fact!). The music was a revelation and had a significant influence in shaping my musical tastes - in fact I can't think of any other album that has had such a profound effect on me as this one. Thus '3 Feet High and Rising' holds a special place in my musical affections. Now, some twenty-five years after its original release, it's time to pay my respect to Pos, Dove, Mase, and Prince Paul...'
