Over 60 blistering minutes he takes in all the beats, breaks, samples and spoken word nuggets that made this seminal Bomb Squad production such an explosive release. This is an amalgam of two mixes I did for Solid Steel at the end of November, 2013. Both were 30 minutes and with a similar downbeat, electronic nature. It's the sort of thing I like to listen to late at night when I'm working on designs or writing. Both appeared on separate shows but were done around the same time so I wanted to present them in one piece like this.

A Little Night Music...

2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's.

Your favourite Coldcut mix was the 'Journeys by DJ Special' from 20th May 2002. The original '70 minutes of Madness' was released in 1995 and often considered "the best DJ mix album of all time" and this mix coincided with it's reissue in 2002. It features extra tracks that didn't appear on the original CD including the Coldcut rework of 'People hold on'

Unsurprisingly, the most popular mix for DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot and DJ Food was their epic version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album from 31st August 2012 made entirely from the original sample sources titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ . Each of them took a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

Finally it was the Hexstatic mix from 28th January 2011 which was your favourite, with the classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. SBTRKT's remix of Modeselektors 'Art&Cash' leads perfectly into material from Robin Hexstatic's project, plus music from  Magnetic Man, Andreya Triana and Dave Angel.

Congratulations to Daniel Westlake from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, who was the winner picked at random in the competition and will receive prizes from Novation, AIAIA, Serato and Solid Steel.

This week DK returns with a trawl through the digital inbox and catches up on some recent and upcoming releases. We kick off once again with the excellent Warrior One remix of 'Eyesdown' by Bonobo and continue in a leftfield uptempo groove with Martyn, Joy Orbison and Octa Push, before dropping the huge bomb that is the Nero mix of 'Sincere'. More bass heavy beats follow before dropping down with new material from the great Gil Scott-Heron, Jay Electronica and the original from Billy Stewart. It's a west London shuffle with 2000 black on the remix for Ty and Seiji mixing it with Jern Eye. Solid Steel (13th July) With festival season in full swing, we look ahead to the excellent Outlook festival in Croatia with 2 artists that are appearing.

In Hour 1 we welcome back DJ Marky, following 2 appearances on Solid Steel a decade ago. With more than 20 years as a true international professional, DJ Marky directed the art of djing and producing music to another level. Now, after years of incessant touring, DJ Marky is still one of the most respected and in demand djs in the club scene and festivals. He has been featured for 9 consecutive years at the biggest open air festival of Brazil, ‘skolbeats’. His productions have been part of many compilations and are played by some of the biggest names in the drum and bass scene. His label, Innerground records has been a dominating force in the drum and bass scene for many years.

Solid Steel Radio Show 13/7/2018 Hour 1 - DJ Marky

Solid Steel in association with Serato (31st August) 3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way. 

Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.
