DJ Food takes us down a dark, synthetic future route full of esoteric pieces more at home in sci-fi soundtracks and public information films. This is an amalgam of two mixes I did for Solid Steel at the end of November, 2013. Both were 30 minutes and with a similar downbeat, electronic nature. It's the sort of thing I like to listen to late at night when I'm working on designs or writing. Both appeared on separate shows but were done around the same time so I wanted to present them in one piece like this.

A Little Night Music...

Solid Steel (7th February) In Hour 1 we welcome The Gaslamp Killer to start off the show. It's a mix of some of GLK's favourite current alternative groups specialising in the dark psychedelic side of rock and the harder edged beat music that he loves so much. Plus a couple of world psych classics in the middle, from fast to slow around we go, always a narrative journey with GLK.
DK continues with the beautiful collaboration between Debruit & Alsarah and onto the new Mount Kimbie remix for Kelis on Ninja Tune and the current single by Falty DL. Then it's a track from the Actress album Ghettoville and into the dub mix of classic 80's Boogie from Barbara Fowler, before ending with Cottam and Instra:mental from the last few years.

Since the late 70s breakbeats have been sampled and repurposed across an ever-evolving global continuum of electronic music. Over time, this method of beatmaking has become highly intricate and nuanced with some of the more technically demanding examples found in hip-hop and others sub-genres such as trip-hop, downtempo and break breakbeats. This mix is a collection of rare & obscure breakbeats or well-known classics. Some gems found on Asian compilations of bands in Cambodia (1977) and Malaysia !

Solid Steel in association with Serato (17th July) Funkstorung return to Solid Steel this week, having been guests back in 2001 (you can hear that mix in the 'Featured' section at SolidSteel.net ). After releases on Studio K7, Compost and Chocolate Industries and remixes for Bjork, Wu Tang and Jean Michel Jarre, they took a break for 10 years. Now they are back and their latest self titled album is out now on Monkeytown. A remixes EP follows in August that features a remix by Mouse on Mars that's included in their mix. They had this to say;
"This mix has everything Funkstörung is about.  Poppy vocals vs. weird beats, nice melodies vs complex sounds… all in a funky suit.
To us the mix feels like a journey… it's stuff from the past, yet unreleased tracks and 'classics' (in our eyes).
It has been a big honour to do another Solid Steel Mix… over 10 years after we did the last one.  It definitely feels really good to be back."

I had the idea several years ago and the more I dug, the more I found, the amount of material out there is mind boggling. Not so strange for such an influential band who rarely release new material I suppose, fans have to fill the gap somehow. 
I'll be uploading the previous 4 volumes in 2012, Volume 6 is already on here and I have vol.7 planned out and waiting for a gap in the schedule to put together

Kraftwerk Kover Kollection Vol.7

Recorded on the anniversary of JFK's assassination and 21 years after their historic '92 New Year mix on Kiss 100 FM, Coldcut meets The Orb inna Uptown Youth House for the Return Trip. Matt Black and Jonathan More alongside studio accomplice Dor Wand got suitably enhanced with Dr LX Paterson and Youth for a multi-player late night jam session lasting over 3 hours. They then entrusted the multitracks of the set to DJ Food who heroically edited, condensed and massaged the sprawling swamp of sound into a tight - but also loose - 2 hour Solid Steel session.

Swimming through the mix are Lee Perry, Killing Joke, Sun Ra, William Burroughs, Teebs, Ry Cooder, Actress, Prince Jammy, Iggy Pop, Monty Python, Hank Williams and Hal 9000. Alongside unreleased dubs from the players themselves, remixes and versions of tunes old and new, the complete track listing for this marathon set may never be fullly disclosed. It's 2 hours, 10 minutes of sonic secrets to melt your mind, probably best listened to in headphones late at night with all suitable facilities for the full effect. Enjoy this trip.

Solid Steel Radio Show 11/1/2013 Part 3 + 4 - Coldcut meets The Orb

In Hour 2 DJ Food takes up the 25th Anniversary slot with volume 8 of his Kraftwerk Kover Kollections in time to celebrate the band playing 8 nights at the Tate Modern in London. These mixes have become a regular feature on the show over the years, unearthing incredible and bizarre cover versions of Kraftwerk tracks. A Bollywood version of The Man Machine, The Model played on church bells, sung by a choir and covered by comedian Adrian Edmondson are just some of the treats along with jazz, piano and acoustic versions of their classics and a couple of comedy skits commenting on the ticket meltdowns surrounding the band's shows.
