This is an amalgam of two mixes I did for Solid Steel at the end of November, 2013. Both were 30 minutes and with a similar downbeat, electronic nature. It's the sort of thing I like to listen to late at night when I'm working on designs or writing. In hour 2 we welcome one of Detroit's finest, Scott Grooves to Solid Steel. He was part of Kevin Saunderson's Inner City project, released his debut album for Soma and collaborated with many legendary figures, and here he delivers his latest concept 'Overdubs' featuring live percussion, Keyboards & mixed together by Scott along with Ian Finklestien (keyboards & engineer). This is what he had to say;
 "The name is fitting because it simply explains the function with just 2 words Over..Dub. Also I would like to add a few more elements to the Overdubapproach in addition to my djing and venture out later this year to a ear near U. I would like to further acknowledge the original composers for providing some true inspiration & musical direction"

"A lot of unreleased stuff all over the place, mixed on the fly in a crude energetic manner on my old 80s Inkel mixer with built in analog delay recorded on a reel tape deck on slow speed. The music is a bit melancholic, a bit romantic, for grim overcast days of snow and rain with some sun rays coming in occasionally…. a prelude to the spring. Slowly mixing towards a happier vibe. Solid Steel in association with Serato (10th July) We're delighted to welcome Prefuse 73 to the show, an artist who has been a firm fixture in the track lists on Solid Steel for many years under his different guises. His EP 'Every Colour of Darkness' is released today on Temporary Residence Ltd (following an album and EP earlier this year) and his mix delves into some choice 90's hip hop. He told us;
"This Solid Steel mix is more of an 'ode' in terms of inspiration. Despite being engaged in a wide scope of music, the majority of these songs reflect what I was listening to in high school & beyond. All of these songs have maintained relevance in terms of important moments in my life. Whether it’s a reminder of where I grew up geographically or straight up youthful nostalgia.
Either way, I’ve explored many avenues as an artist but hip hop ‘is' and always be at the forefront of all my work. 
There probably isn’t a better platform than 'Solid Steel' to put together a mix of some very recognizable & not so recognizable “CLASSICS” - so to speak. 
For the record; Not all_ but many of these songs carry a language of violence among other foul things. Even though I’ve cleaned up some offensive moments, I’d highly suggest putting a NSFW sticker over this mix and not playing it for your kids."

Stolid Seal Mix (album pre-release taster)

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I'm Strictly Kev aka DJ Food, I've been DJing for over 30 years now and collecting vinyl for longer. I've no idea how many records I have but it's probably in the region of 10,000 7", 12" and LPs plus lots of other odd formats that I collect as well as just the music. It's housed in my studio in custom built shelves that include drawers for 45s, cassettes and CDs. 2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I like that the songs are short and sweet, there's no chaff so the track says what it needs to and then it's done, which is essentially what a DJ needs in today's ADD society. I like the size and weight of them compared to 12"s and LPs because I've used digital means to DJ for 8 years now and, when I do go back and play vinyl, I don't want to break my back like I used to lugging a 30 kilo record box around. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

There's a lot of guitars, fuzz and distortion in this one, lots of solid drums too, I'm really digging a lot of the funkier side of rock and psyche in my 45 sets and this comes out here.  Some of it is where rock and electronica cross over though so you'll have DJ Shadow remixing John Spencer Blues Explosion, Brendan Lynch's dub mixes of Paul Weller or Graham Massey's Toolshed project. There's also straight up rock by The Zutons, The Go! Team or Primal Scream and more diggers delights like The Protein Bros, Chaps and Alan Copeland. I try and have a good mix of contemporary stuff in there too, the 45 format shouldn't always be about old, hard to find stuff from the 60s and 70s, there's plenty of great new music around, just as hard to find too.
