This week’s mixtape guest is Bristol-based Daisy Moon. She has a background in contemporary performance, leading her to be the curator of the mix series ‘Off-Kilter’ and has released music on Rhythm Section International and Control Freak Recordings. But you know we had to chat to her first to hear more about the mix & what she’s been up to recently…

It’s been a really busy time recently! I spent some time in Copenhagen running workshops with theatre maker Rachael Clerke as part of the Live Art Danmark festival – we worked with teenage girls and formed punk bands in just a day. They performed as part of the festival, it was tiring but very empowering and super fun! I played at Macadam in Nantes recently which is a club I’ve always wanted to play… and have just got back from doing an all-night Off-Kilter show in Berlin. My time in Bristol has been spent in my studio finalising an EP which will come out next year. I’ve been doing a lot of mentoring for aspiring producers/DJs, we launched a Mix Nights intermediate DJ course and I’ve also been working on Mix Nights takeovers for next year.

The mix was recorded in my living room on my little but trusty XDJ700s and an Allen and Heath Xone 23 mixer straight into Ableton using my soundcard. I didn’t play any records in this one, most of the music is new stuff I’ve been playing recently.

I wanted to do a driving techno mix that represents the kind of stuff I like to play late at night. I’ve had a few peak and closing club shows recently and this energetic, trippy, fast techy sound is something that I’m enjoying getting stuck into atm. The kind of stuff that suits the season.

And up next?

Got some Housework parties coming up which should be fun. First one is this weekend with Josh Caffe at Strange Brew. I’ve just about finished up an EP due to come out next year, and am halfway through another one so my focus is on finishing that. Doing some live Off-Kilter shows next year so I’ll also be planning and preparing for those.

First up for The Mix is Danny From Miami 🌴

@dannydaze takes us on a trip through Miami dance music history, diving into the irregular rhythms he grew up with and nodding to the new wave of flag-bearers. It also features an in-depth interview, exploring  his journey from childhood DJing to time in prison to rising up as Miami’s favourite figurehead, and the first explanation of the concept behind his long-awaited debut album ‘::BLUE::’.

"With this mix, my intention is to show a side of the IDM world I grew up with, steering away from the misconception that IDM is chaotic kitchen utensil-like sounds. I wanted to show a softer side focused on “danceable IDM” and electro. Music you can still bop your head to. As a youngster, I grew up dancing to non-traditional rhythms coming out of labels like M3rck, Schematic, and Beta Bodega, so I wanted to represent quite a bit of this Miami-infused sound along with some newer acts I’ve been immensely into at the moment," he says.

The Mix is our new online mix and interview series, dedicated to the spectrum of electronic music from around the globe, exploring sounds and stories from the early days of rave to the future. 

Mixmag has a long history of publishing mixes, from our legendary cover CDs accompanying the print magazine to our worldwide video streams in The Lab. Last year we celebrated 40 years in the game and The Mix now arrives as a fresh outlet to document DJs and the musical movements they represent, showcasing their sound alongside an in-depth interview. The design pays homage to a previous Mixmag logo from the ealy ’90s, nodding to our heritage while using the square and rectangular building blocks to construct an aesthetic that works cohesively with contemporary design elements and digital motion systems. 

We’ll still be bringing you the Cover Mix, The Lab and occasional sets in other formats, with The Mix is taking the place of our In Session and Impact features, intending to bring an updated look and vision to our flagship weekly DJ profile and sequencing them into one place, without separation. We hope you enjoy.

In Hour 2 we hand over to the Bristol based Banoffee Pies label run by Ell Weston & Sandy Hagenbach. The label started in 2013 as 'a platform for music with no signature sound - for the lovers and listeners' and their vinyl mix features music by Jedi Knights, Fred Prest, Little Tokyo, Matthew Brown and Johnny Blas remixed by Carl Craig. Solid Steel Radio Show 5/1/2018 Hour 2 - Banoffee Pies

Solid Steel (5th January) In Hour 1 we welcome Tee Mango, the alter ego of Millionhands head honcho Tom Mangan. Tee releases records on his own Millionhands imprint, as well as on AUS, Clone Royal Oak & Local Talk. His first album IMPERFECTIONS VOL. 1 - made several end of year lists in 2016 and a cracking remix of The Invisible ft Connan Mockasin followed. His follow up album is in the works with more samples and a host of live instrumentation, and even some vocals from Tee himself. He told us;
"This mix was recorded live on CDJs and a trusty old 1210 in one take. My goal was to make something that i could happily listen to in a few years and still enjoy. Selfish, but true :) I've included records that make me smile, as opposed to make me look cool. There's a few new things and a selection of old goodies in there too. The mixing is not faultless, but that's OK i think. Hope you like it."

In Hour 2 we hand over to Sunil Sharpe, one of Europe's most renowned and well-loved techno DJs, with a mixing style that is distinctly his own. Gaining an enviable reputation for his DJing in the early '00s, he was soon invited to play at Berlin's Tresor Club, marking the start of an intensive involvement in the scene. He has recorded for labels such as Black Sun Records, Rave Or Die, Mord, Trensmat, Inner Surface Music, Violet Poison and perhaps most notably Blawan & Pariah's Sheworks. His latest release is a split 12" with Minimum Syndicat  called 'Joyless Euphoria' and his collaboration with fellow Dublin-based producer DeFeKT saw the release of Tinfoil 6 last month. He told us;
"My aim with DJ mixes like this is to make something that'll stand up in the long-term, kind of like a good record. The majority of records I played here are new or recent while the rest are mostly made up of music from the '90s, and a few from the '00s. There was no set theme but as it came together I guess it was about representing techno and some surrounding styles through a range of rhythms, moods and eras."

Solid Steel (12th January) As we enter our 30th year of broadcasting, it's timely to feature the legendary Kevin Saunderson as our guest in Hour 1. An artist whose music appeared many times, including the first Solid Steel show in 1988, which also featured an interview with his fellow 'Belleville Three' member Juan Atkins. Alongside Derrick May they changed the face of electronic music and the genesis of today’s enormous techno scene can be retraced straight to Kevin, Derrick and Juan, as their formative experiments on rudimentary hardware sketched a blueprint for a genre that was yet to exist. Along with his successful project Inner City, Kevin Saunderson is the man behind the excellent KMS label that started in 1987 and has releases from Chez Damier, Carl Craig, Ron Trent, MK and Bicep, as well as a number of his own aliases.

Solid Steel Radio Show 12/1/2018 Hour 1 - Kevin Saunderson

Solid Steel (19th January) In Hour 1 we're joined by Steven Rutter from B12, the label and production duo that also features Mike Golding, who were at the forefront of the UK Techno scene in the early 90's, inspired by the sounds coming out of Detroit at the time. They were signed by Warp featuring on the seminal Artificial Intelligence  series (alongside Aphex Twin, Richie Hawtin, The Black Dog and Autechre) and their classic Electro-Soma from 1993 was reissued last year and he has a new album coming out on his FireScope label in March. He told us;
"When I was asked to do a mix ; I got kinda nervous as I have never done one of these before .. I am only a bedroom mixer … and certainly doing something like this was a bit frightening. I don’t pretend to be cutting edge or really listen to much new music. Although I own and run my label FireScope Records, this is not an issue for me personally. Anyhow, so I just allowed my mind to go back to the days of standing by the window in my bedsit, situated in Walthamstow east London and I dug out the tunes that I loved then and still love today. I also cheekily included 3 FireScope records tunes too :-) but none of my own recent solo releases !!!
I was no longer 51 years old ; but a bright eyes bushy-tailed music nut, and the mix just put itself together as my hand and ears were once again guided by my higher power. I hope you will enjoy this selection. Thank you to each and everyone that has supported me through the years as I start developing my own solo identity going forward.
I just played Berghain New Years Eve ; a massive club, it was wonderful and the people loved it. It was in the Halle AM ambient room and there were some B12 beats going on in there. In contrast to this, I will be playing a very small gig in May for my friends at Touched music where all proceeds go to McMillan Cancer Support - Touched is a cause I am constantly working with, having given them their first vinyl release last year :-)
November 2017 was a good month for me ; I released FS009 - Steven Rutter - From Me To You - on my FireScope records label and for the first time I used my name as the artist name it was well received ; and sometime probably March ; my solo album (cat no. FS012) will be out there."

Solid Steel (23rd February) In Hour 1 we welcome Marcel Vogel who runs the Lumberjacks in Hell label, which has his 'Brown Curls' and 'If You like' 12" releases forthcoming over the next couple of months. He told us;
"One of my earliest influences as a DJ and record collector has been Journeys By DJ: Coldcut - 70 Minutes Of Madness. Almost naturally that led to digging into the early DJ Food Jazz Breaks. That's over 20 years ago. From there I have departured into house and later into Disco and Funk. Around 2004 Madvillainy resparked my interest in Hip Hop and Rap. I suppose living in Berlin from 2003-2007 and being exposed to Jazzanova and their extended circles exposed me to somewhat a more ecclectic approach of Djing, cominbining Nujazz and breaks and everything that's available from the palette of dancemusic. And to round it up my relocation to Amsterdam in 2010 is also my most recent and on going step of evolution as a collector and DJ. In a time where every DJ seems to be able to bang it out and play every aspect of rare leftfield music at the same time. The development of the internet, the availability of music literally without limits and the possibilities of CDJ's and USB sticks made it so much more interesting and rewarding to be part of the nightlife and share musical stories with the world. In 2018, and that's the bubble I live in, every Doner Kebab vendour, every shoe store and every bar seem to have access to the coolest Spotify list and the craziest mixes on soundcloud and mixcloud. The unheard is being unearthed with a much faster pace. Common nerd-knowledge is shared on a global level like viruses in 12 Monkeys. Youtube and Boiler Room and online radio stations can't keep any secrets for long. It's wonderful, it's competetive and it creates forms of unity and belonging. I suppose we have been dreaming of this. To be pulled down a rabbit hole of music that doesnt know any limits or boarders. That was the promise when I started to buy records and it has been fulfilled beyond my wildest dreams. Maybe we'll encounter a sort of hangover at some point but at the moment it looks like we'll just keep re-disovering only madder and madder forgotten tunes from all corners of the world.
And this is what this mix is about. Heritage, belonging, unity. My family and my bonds have been created in our common passion for this sort of music. Call it freestyle if you want. Call it Disco. Or rare groove. Most days I dont have a name for it. But it is still exciting and it makes me get up every day and do my research. Online and in the record stores. Who knew there was seemingly no end to it?"
