Back at the end of 2006, when Trevor Jackson's Output Recordings folded, I put together a 3 hour tribute mix of my favourite tracks. This went out as 3 separate mixes on Solid Steel and I even made a very limited number of facsimile Output CDRs of the mixes. I've recently had requests to upload it again so, by the miracle that is Soundcloud, it's available. I've also edited it into one piece finally and the track list is embedded in the Lyrics section of the mp3.

Solid Steel (30th August) Coldcut presents 2 Hours of Sanity Pt. 1 Love - This is Part 1 in a new Coldcut series of mixes.

The mind map lists the bases we want to cover, and some part of the links between our lifelong music experience and the electronic scene of today.  It's partly about playing with the interface between DJ mixes of other peoples tunes, and producer/studio mixes creating original tunes. Using micro slicing and multi threading of material, with an ear for the magic moment of harmonic mix beauty and eye for mix aptness. 
The project is also about celebrating the history of musical experimentation, featuring innovators ancient to the future. Using spoken word from Sun Ra's Arkestra as a leitmotif, it's a tribute from Coldcut to some of the artists we feel have both moved us and changed the game.
You can catch Matt Black from Coldcut celebrating 25 years of Solid Steel alongside DJ Cheeba at We Love in Ibiza on 1st September.

Solid Steel (25th July) We start this week with Leeds based producer Bambooman who has his EP 'Dulcet' out on Sonic Router. He has also released on Brownswood and Project Mooncircle, and this is what he said about his mix:
"I tried to make the mix as summery as possible to go with the great weather we've been having; so here's hoping it gives of that vibe! I included a few old favourites - tracks that inspired me to make music in the first place from people like Edan, Moondog and Storms and Stress - alongside some new stuff I found that I've really been feeling from Lonnie Holley, Mo Kolours and Connan Mockasin before tying it off with 'Like A Hawk'; a track by my good friend's band, Golden Teacher. The rest of the mix is all my own material: Bambooman tracks (some released, some not) alongside tracks I've produced for London based soul singer, Segilola and bits from my side project Grouphums and 'Ferric' from my Rhodo Dendron collaboration alongside producer Venuq.
Best served with sunshine and an ice cold juice..."

Solid Steel Radio Show 25/7/2014 Part 1 + 2 - Bambooman

Solid Steel (9th January) DK is back for his first mix of 2015 and after a brief intro from Doug Carn, it's straight into a batch of forthcoming music from Glenn Astro & Max Graef, Dan Snake and Anthony Naples from his album coming out on Four Tet's Text label. It's another spin for the huge Roots by Romare and classic deep house from 1995 from Marc Kinchen and Chez Damier under his Andthoney alias. 
Mix of the Year winner Clap! Clap! is remixed by Lurka Obeah, followed by a host of giveaways from Seven Davis Jr, Alex Patchwork, Photay and the Hudson Mohawke remix of Four Tet. Then more new music with Soundbwoy Killah and Beat Spacek with a track from the Modern Streets album out in 2 weeks, plus there's always time for another Fela Kuti track.

Solid Steel (23rd January)DJ Food returns to the Magpie Music theme he started last year with a second mix collecting a host of his favourite tracks from 2014 in an extended mix. Heavy beats, fuzz bass, rockist guitars and analogue synths are the rich pickings that the Magpie furnishes its nest with as well as a healthy dose of underground Hip Hop. Food favourites Jane Weaver, Temples and Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger get several selections as well as Gas Giant (friend of Solid Steel, Bristol's Awkward under an alias). Solid Steel (27th March) DJ Food returns with a second instalment of his Future Shock series - mixes with a bias towards the purely electronic and largely instrumental end of the spectrum. Ninja Tune acts Machinedrum, Falty DL and Martyn rub transistors with Sinoia Caves, Pye Corner Audio and Silent Servant. Old hands The Human League, Carpenter & Howarth and Psychic TV are present, even Queen get a look in. Sandwiched in the middle is a lengthy excerpt of Tangerine Dream's 'Tru Metamorphic Rocks' in dedication to founder Edgar Froese who passed away recently.

Solid Steel Radio Show 27/3/2015 Part 1 + 2 - DJ Food

Solid Steel (31st March) We're delighted to welcome Little Dragon to Solid Steel this week. The Grammy-nominated band have announced their long-awaited new album ‘Season High’, which is out on April 14th on Because Music http://little-dragon.net They recently dropped the track 'Sweet' from the album and before that the track 'High', which saw the remix by Michael Uzowuru & Jeff Kleinman getting it's Premiere by Pharrell on his Beats 1 show. The band are set to embark on an extensive World tour in support of ‘Season High’, which includes Coachella, Parklife, Sonar, Bestival and a date at the Roundhouse in London in October. Music featured in the mix includes Big Sean, Jimi Hendrix, Johnnie Frierson, Martyn, the Kaytranada mix for Teedra Moses and Bryson Tiller.
