Solid Steel (13th February) DJ Food - Selected Aphex Works

Unless you've been living under a rock recently you'll have heard the news that Aphex Twin unexpectedly uploaded 155 of his old and unreleased tracks to Soundcloud and made them downloadable for free. Starting from his earliest demos through to known live tracks, later jungle experiments and beyond, this is the motherlode that his fans have always wanted. DJ Food, a long-time Aphex fan, has been through the entire collection with a fine-toothed comb and selected his favourites for the first half of the show this week. The hit rate was high but he's has managed to cram 31 tracks into 85 minutes to mark this unique occasion and peppered the mix with vintage interview clips of Richard James talking about his music.

Tripped-out excursions through percussive club music with the Nowadays resident.

Ayesha Chugh, AKA Ayesha, makes club music that activates the body. The Brooklyn-based artist has spent the last few years carving out a distinct lane in modern club music. Her fusion of dubstep, techno and essential '90s rave elements into dynamite club tools that test and support dancers in equal measure. This time though, for her RA Podcast, Chugh purposefully tilts in a "more colorful wonky direction."

Since first turning heads with releases on labels like Fever AM and Kindergarten Records, she’s continued to refine a sound that feels both playful and punishing, marked by writhing basslines, rumbling drums and an innate ability to make bodies move. Her productions capture a kind of kinetic precision—tracks that are slippery yet forceful, balancing psychedelic textures with dubstep-like physicality and club-focused power. As Andrew Ryce wrote of her debut, Rhythm is Memory, her skill is "full of textures that wrap around the otherwise thudding, sub-heavy kick drums." After a serious accident in 2024 stopped her in her tracks, this year marks a full return to global touring with a new vantage point on life and the sound she seeks to push.

RA.983, clocking in at nearly two and a half hours, finds Chugh flexing that club muscle once again. Offering a tour through global club music both old and new, it's based around a set at her home base Nowadays this February. It's a patient but relentless ride: from deep, tunneling psytrance, progressive techno and slippery electro before really turning on the gas at the half mark, moving into slanted UK techno territory.

As she explains in the Q&A, it's a carefully curated selection of tracks that probes "what we perceive as tasteful." It's a mix that speaks to her deep knowledge of dance music’s lineage—and her intuitive ability to push it forward.

Solid Steel (26th May) In Hour 1 we welcome Djrum to Solid Steel, a producer who has been turning heads since 2010 with his early productions on Smokin' Sessions, On The Edge and his Mountains EP on 2nd Drop Records. Some of his best mixes have been a soundtrack to an imaginary movie and it's no exception here, with music from Bjork, Randomer, Lurka, Gila, Colin Stetson, Kowton, Trus'me and Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto included to accompany a film in your mind. He told us;
"This mix has been conceived as a soundtrack to an imaginary movie. It differs from the kind of mix that i would do in a club, as the focus is more on creating an atmosphere or mood than it is about rhythmic drive."

Solid Steel (7th December) We finish our week of celebrations for 30 Years of Solid Steel where it all started, with a mix by Detroit Techno legend Juan Atkins and Ninja Tune founders Coldcut. Juan Atkins was the guest on the first Solid Steel show in December 1988 and you can also hear that mix and interview by Coldcut at http://solidsteel.net/broadcasts/916

Recalling his experience appearing on pirate radio station Kiss FM, Juan told us: “I remember doing the show with Coldcut in 1988 from someone’s apartment, like on the 9th floor or so in what seemed to be a huge apartment building. I was amazed by all of the pirate radio stations in London that were introducing the UK to all the new music, music styles, and genres. We had nothing like that in the USA. Pirate radio stations in the UK were responsible for this music making it into the charts as well” 

“Interviewing Juan Atkins was a buzz” recalls Matt Black from Coldcut. “Not only for the fact I had never interviewed anyone before, let alone a don of his calibre. I was a fan of his work as one of the Belville 3 (Atkins, May, Saunderson), but also earlier as Cybertron, whose Kraftwerk-meets-hiphop-electro excursions had reached and rocked us in the UK early 80s with his space-out sound. I relished the opportunity to get a direct line on the origins of electro and techno from key originator Mr Atkins, and also found out some of his thoughts on the birthplace of much music - Detroit. He expressed wonder at being on pirate station Kiss and how the UK's pirate radio supported new music and DJ culture. Juan is a beautiful guy and I well remember his soulful natural charisma and down to earthness. His DNA runs prolifically through modern music.”

Juan Atkins recently announced that he will perform the first-ever Cybotron live show on a new tour, launching in April at the Barbican in London. There's also a new album from the influential electro project on the way
