As part of our celebration of 21 years of club culture, we're featuring some of our favourite DJs from around the world, highlighting the parties and clubs most important to their lives in dance music. 

The Loft is one of the most storied and sacred spaces in dance music history. Founded in Manhattan in 1970 by the late David Mancuso, The Loft was a party unlike any other: relaxed and gently psychedelic, with pristine audiophile sound played at a medium volume level kinder to the ears. You didn't need to blast the music to appreciate the sonic perfection of the music and the system it was played on. Over the decades, Mancuso invented his own influential style of DJing, letting the records breathe rather than mashing them together. Mancuso, who died in 2016, had many acolytes over the years, perhaps none more prominent than Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, who provides our final 2122 birthday RA Podcast: a tribute to The Loft.

Murphy has an impressive resume without The Loft: she's a long-time radio DJ, founded the Classic Album Sundays series and started her own Lucky Cloud Loft Party in London, in collaboration with Mancuso. Her DJing style, slow, steady and respectful of the music, channels those years spent at The Loft, and her RA Podcast embodies the disco-influenced sounds that define the party, played with care, love and reverence.

In hour 2 we welcome one of Detroit's finest, Scott Grooves to Solid Steel. He was part of Kevin Saunderson's Inner City project, released his debut album for Soma and collaborated with many legendary figures, and here he delivers his latest concept 'Overdubs' featuring live percussion, Keyboards & mixed together by Scott along with Ian Finklestien (keyboards & engineer). This is what he had to say;
 "The name is fitting because it simply explains the function with just 2 words Over..Dub. Also I would like to add a few more elements to the Overdubapproach in addition to my djing and venture out later this year to a ear near U. I would like to further acknowledge the original composers for providing some true inspiration & musical direction"

Solid Steel (23rd January)DJ Food returns to the Magpie Music theme he started last year with a second mix collecting a host of his favourite tracks from 2014 in an extended mix. Heavy beats, fuzz bass, rockist guitars and analogue synths are the rich pickings that the Magpie furnishes its nest with as well as a healthy dose of underground Hip Hop. Food favourites Jane Weaver, Temples and Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger get several selections as well as Gas Giant (friend of Solid Steel, Bristol's Awkward under an alias). Solid Steel (23rd January) Our guest in Hour 1 is Legowelt, a man of many guises,  but it's his most well known alias that delivers an exclusive mix for Solid Steel. He said this about his mix;
"A lot of unreleased stuff all over the place, mixed on the fly in a crude energetic manner on my old 80s Inkel mixer with built in analog delay recorded on a reel tape deck on slow speed. The music is a bit melancholic, a bit romantic, for grim overcast days of snow and rain with some sun rays coming in occasionally…. a prelude to the spring. Slowly mixing towards a happier vibe. No shallow dumb inbred shit for "Blokes" this is for mad dealers and freaks!"

In Hour 2 this week we kick off a new regular feature for Solid Steel - Record Store Residency. Launching off the back of our successful RSD 2014 special, each month we’ll be asking some of the best record shops from around the world to contribute a 60 minute mix, showcasing the music they love. First up it’s Drift Record Shop from Devon in the UK, who deliver us a mix and told us "The shop curation is pretty scatty, so to avoid too much of a discordant listen we focused primarily on drum machines, synths, pianos and organs." Music on offer from Oneohtrix Point Never, Romare, Martyn, Radiohead, Four Tet and The Gaslamp Killer for your Friday afternoon listening pleasure.

Last year we spent some time in Bali at Potato Head (@potatoheadmusic). Alongside my night time gig I asked them if I could play a "sunset set" by the beach. Instead a biblical thunderstorm rolled through and we all huddled under the covers. 
Some records I have played before, some I haven't all of them special to me in some way.
