Trance Classixx Part 10

2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's.

Your favourite Coldcut mix was the 'Journeys by DJ Special' from 20th May 2002. The original '70 minutes of Madness' was released in 1995 and often considered "the best DJ mix album of all time" and this mix coincided with it's reissue in 2002. It features extra tracks that didn't appear on the original CD including the Coldcut rework of 'People hold on'

Unsurprisingly, the most popular mix for DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot and DJ Food was their epic version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album from 31st August 2012 made entirely from the original sample sources titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ . Each of them took a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

Finally it was the Hexstatic mix from 28th January 2011 which was your favourite, with the classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. SBTRKT's remix of Modeselektors 'Art&Cash' leads perfectly into material from Robin Hexstatic's project, plus music from  Magnetic Man, Andreya Triana and Dave Angel.

Congratulations to Daniel Westlake from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, who was the winner picked at random in the competition and will receive prizes from Novation, AIAIA, Serato and Solid Steel.

Solid Steel (28th March) In the latest instalment, DK has put together a mix unveiling some of the latest gems from the Ninja Tune family of labels. This includes an EXCLUSIVE play of Machinedrum’s stunning remix of 'Runnin’ by Kelis -  available on the special, indies-only, limited edition version of her album 'Food', alongside the other remixes in this show from Breach and Will Saul. 
Then it's the turn of Machinedrum to be remixed by Seafloor, two from NameBrandSound, the VIP mix of 'Hardcourage' from Falty DL, a track from the forthcoming Mr Scruff album 'Friendly Bacteria', Teebs, classic Roots Manuva and two more for Record Store Day, from Illum Sphere and a Psych classic from The Animated Egg, released alongside If Music.

DJ Food 'Children of the Sun' Farmfest Mix 2014

This is a mix I put together to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Massive Attack's third album 'Mezzanine', focusing mainly on tracks & breaks used on the Bristol group's first three albums.

This was broadcast on The Huey Show's Block Party on BBC 6 Music, Sat 22nd April 2023 (Record Store Day). This version contains the 27 minute mix that was aired, as well as an additional segment at the end that was chopped for time.

In Hour 2 DJ Food takes up the 25th Anniversary slot with volume 8 of his Kraftwerk Kover Kollections in time to celebrate the band playing 8 nights at the Tate Modern in London. These mixes have become a regular feature on the show over the years, unearthing incredible and bizarre cover versions of Kraftwerk tracks. A Bollywood version of The Man Machine, The Model played on church bells, sung by a choir and covered by comedian Adrian Edmondson are just some of the treats along with jazz, piano and acoustic versions of their classics and a couple of comedy skits commenting on the ticket meltdowns surrounding the band's shows.
