Using Serato's Video-SL plug-in for Scratch Live, they mix, scratch and blend the sound AND vision for each track they play. Months were spent creating videos for each piece of music, either using the original source material or, in most cases sampling footage to create a new video entirely. Described as 'Video Turntablism', it has become a way for Food & DK to visualize their already legendary DJ sets. 
As usual, it's the diverse mix of music that they love and are known for, taking in current faves from Foreign Beggars & Noisia, Joy Orbison and Dorian Concept, but also plenty of classics that have kept dancefloors rocking from TTC, Pendulum, Luke Vibert, Think Tank and Z-Trip. Solid Steel in association with Serato (13th November) This week on Solid Steel we feature the recent Radio 1 Essential Mix from Coldcut and DK, minus the talking and available to download. As part of the Ninja Tune 25th Anniversary, Matt Black said "We wanted to represent as many of the current Ninja Tune roster as possible and also throw a couple of classics from the archives into the mix, in addition to some influential and inspirational tracks" 
We start with the brand new single from Roots Manuva, plus music from Ninja Tune artists Romare, Beat Spacek, Bonobo, Machinedrum, an unreleased track from Illum Sphere and 'Glassbeadgames' by Martyn and Four Tet, with classic tracks from The Bug, Squarepusher remix for DJ Food, DJ Vadim and cLOUDDEAD remixed by Boards of Canada. Meanwhile Dream Continuum grab a cheeky sample of Coldcut's People Hold On and we hear the Eddie Kendricks track that lyrically inspired said tune. 1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I'm Strictly Kev aka DJ Food, I've been DJing for over 30 years now and collecting vinyl for longer. I've no idea how many records I have but it's probably in the region of 10,000 7", 12" and LPs plus lots of other odd formats that I collect as well as just the music. It's housed in my studio in custom built shelves that include drawers for 45s, cassettes and CDs. 2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I like that the songs are short and sweet, there's no chaff so the track says what it needs to and then it's done, which is essentially what a DJ needs in today's ADD society. I like the size and weight of them compared to 12"s and LPs because I've used digital means to DJ for 8 years now and, when I do go back and play vinyl, I don't want to break my back like I used to lugging a 30 kilo record box around. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

There's a lot of guitars, fuzz and distortion in this one, lots of solid drums too, I'm really digging a lot of the funkier side of rock and psyche in my 45 sets and this comes out here.  Some of it is where rock and electronica cross over though so you'll have DJ Shadow remixing John Spencer Blues Explosion, Brendan Lynch's dub mixes of Paul Weller or Graham Massey's Toolshed project. There's also straight up rock by The Zutons, The Go! Team or Primal Scream and more diggers delights like The Protein Bros, Chaps and Alan Copeland. I try and have a good mix of contemporary stuff in there too, the 45 format shouldn't always be about old, hard to find stuff from the 60s and 70s, there's plenty of great new music around, just as hard to find too.

Solid Steel Radio Show 6/4/2018 Hour 1 - Dan The Automator (Dr Octagon)

DJ SHADOW & DJ KRUSH - HEADZ TOUR (9 11 94) - PT.1

Back in the late 90's we were touring in N. America and Japan a lot and mixtapes were a small, cheap piece of merchandise to sell at shows so I put this collection together. Using scraps of turntable jams from Stealth, Solid Steel and various other gigs we'd been recording over the preceding years as well as answerphone messages and other miscellanea, this ramshackle collection resulted.
It's all live, virtually all improvised, there are mistakes, needle skips, sloppy scratches and bad sound quality (sound sources were from cassette or portable DAT generally). There were possibly around 500 copies made but I only had one myself. The audio for this rip was taken from the master DAT though and EQ'd and balanced in places to make it a nicer listen. The cover image of a John Coltrane painting was taken in Tortoise's kitchen in Chicago, one Sunday on a day off when PC and I were there with Bundy K Brown, hence the title.Sunday At Bundy's - DJ Food's Audio Scrapbook (side A.)
