Bucky Skank is my hobby. I've loved Jamaican and Jamaican inspired / influenced music for nearly my whole musical life. I don't consider myself an expert in any way but over the years I have amassed quite a lot of this music and it is one of a very few forms of music I can listen to all day without getting bored.

I have played about a half dozen full sets of this music and it has been like learning how to dj all over again. All those sets had a slightly shambolic edge to them as I found my feet but have been wonderful, if nerve wracking fun as I scrambled in the dark to find the right 7" to play next. It's definitely not something I'd like to do all the time but doing it one or two times a year is a true joy, so a big thanks to those who have come along and danced. 

There is also the Bucky Skank label, again very much a hobby which releases a couple of 12"s each year (the first one now sold out, the second one due shortly).

Anyway, here's a two hour mix featuring some of what I played at this year's Bucky Skank in Glasgow. Half of it was recorded on the night and half after the fact, at home. Hopefully the joins aren't too noticeable. A tiny handful of the tracks were on the mix I put up a couple of years ago (The Upsetters' "Bucky Skank" will of course appear in every Bucky Skank set I do and bookends this mix albeit in different versions). if you are looking for totally obscure, ultra rare Jamaican music, this is probably not for you but if you want to hear some of the myriad sounds that have come out of that small island or that it has inspired, hopefully it will be enjoyable; plenty of hits and lots of personal favourites from across 50 years (1964 - 2014), ranging from Barrington Levy, Bim Sherman, Prince Far I and Tenor Saw to Kahn, Cutty Ranks and Lady Saw.

The mix is "augmented" with my dub siren, some space echo and Maschine being used to trigger some additional sounds and samples.

The mix is a little over two hours long, is a downloadable 256kbps mp3 and is 230mb.

The next Lobster Theremin podcast comes from West Coast producer, Grant, who will be gracing our Mörk sublabel later in the year with a 3LP of his signature warm house and vintage-sounding rolling 4/4 jams. There's even a proper Gatecrasher piano 'n' violins number in there, proper 90's bizz incoming!

With his LA imprint The Lauren Bacall firing on all cylinders, and his newly enshrined Temporary State label mixing up a woozy mix of clean 'n' clattering house-infused techno we decided it time to let him loose in the mix. 60 minutes of clean, rolling and sunshine-lased house to hopefully kick off the European summertime. ⛅

In Hour 2 it's fellow Canadian Gene Tellem who released her debut EP “Who Says No” on Project Pablo’s label SOBO (Sounds Of Beaubien Ouest) last month. Her mix takes in music from Lola Allen, Sean Smith, LK, Morgun, DMX Krewcharles Trees and Bradford James. She told us;
"Mixes are a great way to give certain songs another life after seeing their effect in confined space. Often those will be put aside to be rediscovered later on. A mix is also a great way to introduce new pieces that i’m excited about, in hopes to create some familiarity for them with the listener that may find themselves hearing it out in the clubs and dance parties of the world."

Solid Steel (8th December) We're delighted to welcome an extended set from Jayda G who has been lighting up dancefloors with her music selection plus her passion and enthusiasm. The Canadian producer and DJ shares her time between Vancouver and Berlin, in between running her label Freakout Cult with DJ Fett Burger, which released her 10" Monroe Bumpa / 186 Haylin' alongside Laylay in the summer, followed by a Rudow 12" in September. She had this to say about her mix;

Solid Steel (5th January) In Hour 1 we welcome Tee Mango, the alter ego of Millionhands head honcho Tom Mangan. Tee releases records on his own Millionhands imprint, as well as on AUS, Clone Royal Oak & Local Talk. His first album IMPERFECTIONS VOL. 1 - made several end of year lists in 2016 and a cracking remix of The Invisible ft Connan Mockasin followed. His follow up album is in the works with more samples and a host of live instrumentation, and even some vocals from Tee himself. He told us;
"This mix was recorded live on CDJs and a trusty old 1210 in one take. My goal was to make something that i could happily listen to in a few years and still enjoy. Selfish, but true :) I've included records that make me smile, as opposed to make me look cool. There's a few new things and a selection of old goodies in there too. The mixing is not faultless, but that's OK i think. Hope you like it."

In Hour 2 it's Los Angeles based Alpha Pup Records who have served as a record label and distribution network for over a decade now, bridging gaps between a multitude of genres and lifestyles.
