A seasoned figure in the world of underground dance, Mike Griego makes his Meanwhile debut with the typically impressive “Placebo / Angel Stab / I Only Really Care About Music”.

An artist with more than 150 production credits to his name, dating back to a 2009 debut on Atlantdigital, Mike Griego is a renowned figure in the world of progressive house. Able to carve out a sizeable niche with a smooth and dynamic sound, the Argentinean has found his music favoured by a host A-list DJs. Over 15 years a slew of high-profile releases have found themselves at home on such esteemed imprints as Cid Inc.’s Replug, Darin Epsilon’s Perspectives Digital, Guy Mantzur’s Plattenbank and Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music.

Now making his Meanwhile debut, the Buenos Aires-based artist has excelled once again with a wonderfully sculpted musical triptych. Opening proceedings, “Placebo” is characterised by heavy beat and a clicking, popping groove. Full of percussive energy, a smoothly bouncing bassline is then juxtaposed against a lead synth line full of melancholy and beauty. A syncopated motif then picks up the pace through to a beatless breakdown where new melodic elements come to the fore alongside pads and white-noise washes. These then play out in a magical second half reprising earlier melodic phrasing.

Redolent in the same rhythmic brio as its predecessor, a gloriously dark and immaculately placed sub-bassline pattern emerges from “Angel Stab”. Waves of undulating pads wash over the 9-minute piece as it builds in intensity with multi-faceted layers of modulated sounds that twist and transform. At the mid-point, a shimmering melody makes its free-flowing entrance, drenched in reverb and delays that cascade into the breakdown as the rhythmic elements are gradually stripped away. Dropping back into its impressive rhythmic and bass groove in the third movement, the track extols the virtues of Griego’s production skills and dancefloor knowhow.

The final track sees “I Only Really Care About Music” showcasing Mike Griego’s varied and plentiful skillset. The sublime rhythmic narrative is continued as a light percussive melody can be found over a huge glissando bass pattern while a tumbling synth sequence flows freely over the mid-range, full of stereo-panned delays that fill the breakdown with beauty and poise. Exploding into the second half, a pulsating bassline and rhythmic top-line drive the hypnotic melody forward, creating the perfect vehicle for the rich melodies to shine in a carefree and club-friendly sonic environment.

Generating a Meanwhile debut of epic proportions, Mike Griego’s passion for his craft shines through “Placebo / Angel Stab / I Only Really Care About Music”.

Clubsonica Records opens the spring season with a new collaborative project from Andre Moret and Mariusso. As one of Brazil's most highly regarded progressive house artists, Andre Moret has achieved many successes across his seven year career. World class DJs Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren have been regular supporters, while his inimitable productions have found a home on Mango Alley, Plattenbank, The Soundgarden and Warung Recordings, amongst others. Also an accomplished DJ, the Campinas resident has taken his impeccable taste and smooth programming skills around the world, performing in Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay, while also being a fixture of Brazil's vibrant nightlife, through his highly regarded gigs at D.EDGE, Club 88, Clash Club, Gate22 and more. Meanwhile, also hailing from Brazil, Douglas Mariusso aka Mariusso made his mark as a DJ first, gaining recognition early on for performances at both clubs and festivals, most notably Alakazam, NuGarden, Tulum Open Air, Vozz and Warung Tour. Eventually gaining traction as a producer as well, the Balneário Camboriú resident managed to craft his own unique amalgamation of progressive, organic and afro house, leading to projects for long-standing imprints in Droid9 and Transensations, amongst others. Having been previously paired for well-received releases via Fractal Noise, Nature Recordings, One of A Kind and The Purr, Andre Moret and Mariusso continue to build on their creative partnership into 2025, adding Clubsonica to their resume with ‘Cygnus', alongside remixes from Cosmonaut and Abity.

The release concludes with Abity returning to the label for the second and final interpretation of ‘Cygnus'. Hailing from Argentina, José Duque and Bruno Signorelli make up the Abity production team. The Rosario natives have been collaborating and creating their brand of progressive music for well over a decade. Laying claim to a discography of close to 300 credits, the Nick Warren favourites have showcased their music via Higher States, Or Two Strangers, Proton's Particles, The Soundgarden and Univack. Also finding a home on Clubsonica, the duo's creative partnership with the label began in 2022 with the release of ‘Sinerxia | Lotus', an EP project which would lead to their first remix for the label in 2024, a groovy progressive rendition of ‘Ambar' by Clubsonica boss Juan Pablo Torrez and Jossem. With 2025 getting underway with a single for Paul Hazendonk's 90watts imprint, Abity continues to flex their progressive minded approach, returning to Clubsonica with a powerful rendition of ‘Cygnus'. Striking a balance between deeper monochromes and supreme club dynamics, Abity takes the original's colourful cosmic vibe and remodels it against waves of unpredictable synth phrasing and haunting vocal choirs, all while percolating lines and soaring atmospherics continue to deliver much-needed curveballs for the more adventurous selectors out there.

The fight against the restless mind
Faithless's "Insomnia" directly exposes the impact of sleep deprivation, transforming Maxi Jazz's personal experience into something universal. The vocalist drew inspiration from his own insomnia, caused by a tooth abscess, to create a narrative about the constant struggle against relentless thoughts and the search for relief. Lines like "I struggle, fight dark forces / In the clear moonlight / Without fear, insomnia / I can't get no sleep" demonstrate both the physical exhaustion and the mental struggle that intensifies during the night.
The lyrics blend desire, frustration, and failed attempts to find peace, as in “Insomnia, please release me and let me dream of / Making mad love to my girl on the heath / Tearin' off tights with my teeth / But there's no release, no peace.” The use of sleeping pills, mentioned in “kept takin' sleepers / But now I keep myself pepped,” shows the transition from despair to restless resignation. Even creativity, as in “that night I write by candlelight / I find insight,” emerges as a result of forced wakefulness. The chorus “I can't get no sleep” reinforces the endless cycle of insomnia, making the song a faithful portrait of the exhaustion and restlessness of sleepless nights.
