2 hours of (mostly) afro/afro-infused/afro-inspired music broadcasted in January from The Other Radio, Cape Town. As with most our mixes, expect things to heat up along the way :)

The Other Radio is part of The Other creative studio and music institute from Cape Town founded by Aaron and Johan. I got chatting to Johan at their record shop, "The Other Records' and he kindly invited me to their studio. Perched upon a rooftop of a high-rise in the heart of the city with views of Table Mountain. Despite the fact they've only been operating since last September, The Other is definitely a music & cultural gem of the city. If you're in town, be sure to get in touch with them.

This week we introduce Félix Barancy, a French collector, DJ and disco enthusiast living between Lyon and Paris. Félix has been collecting records for the past ten years, focusing mainly on soul, disco, jazz, and everything in-between. More recently, he’s been a lot into African music as well. 

Since 2017, he has been sharing his discoveries in radio shows and on his IG account @felixbarancy. Félix is currently a resident DJ at Root Radio in Istanbul, where he runs a monthly show dedicated to West-African music. 

Here’s what Félix had to say about the mix..

“This mix reflects the diversity of my musical interests, sifting through soul, disco, reggae/lovers, gospel and jazz. It features some of my all-time favorite songs, on my most beloved format - 7-inch vinyl records (and a few LPs), all OG pressings. I tried to include some famous party anthems (eg Skyes's "Aint No Need") as well as lesser-known dancers like Jan Davis Group's "Boogie Down". It was recorded and played through a Condesa Lucia mixer, Klipsch speakers and an Audio Van Asltine tube amplifier. I hope you'll enjoy it!”

The Guest Mix 029: Félix Barancy

Qwanah (The Original Incense Burner) started to collect vinyl records more than two decades ago, which also means he has been through a whole lot of different music genres during the years. Almost as many different dj names he’s been through. Known for mixing multiple genres when he’s DJ’ing at his own club night “Coco’s Special Order”, all though mainly focused on dance music.

“Spinning at Nitty Gritty is like playing at home, I don’t need to cater to a dance floor, I can express my current mood and feelings through my selection and hopefully connect with somebody. Thank you for having me!”
