New EP out from Los Chicos Altos "Palo q'sea", the Barcelona-based duo, Los Chicos Altos, team up with Afro-Colombian folkloric group Palo Q'Sea to deliver a brand new EP on UrbanWorld Records. After highly successful contributions to compilations on Wonderwheel Records, the new EP entitled El Diablo Alegre continues the bands' collaboration which mixes indigenous South American and traditional Afro-Latin music with modern electronic production including a Novalima remix by yours truly Mr R.

"Crazay" is the main track here, where Art Of Tones delivers once again his unique sound signature. Evolving around a funky bassline and classy guitar licks, and with its familiar, soulful vocal snippets, the track has an usual, slightly aggressive colour that makes it sound truly different from the usual disco tunes heard here and there.

Cult sensation Gloria Ann Taylor, who in the early 1970s laid the groundwork for much of disco, R&B, and modern soul as we know it, sees her posthumous release 'Be Worthy' reimagined by renowned producers Flying Mojito Bros into a euphoric, gospel-piano-house-esque West Coast disco cruiser.

PREMIERE: Gloria Ann Taylor - Be Worthy (Flying Mojito Bros Dub Refrito)

Whisper it quietly, but Andrew Meecham’s ninth album as The Emperor Machine, Island Boogie, may well be the long-serving producer’s strongest set to date. Of course, all his albums ripple with vintage synth sounds, colourful lead lines, dub-flecked electronic disco and lashings of cosmic intent, but this one just feels a little more special.

Island Boogie is certainly special. Meecham’s “most personal” full-length to date was inspired by his experiences at the Rotation Garden Party – a beloved micro-festival promoted by a group of friends (including sometime Bizarre Inc and Chicken Lips partner Dean Meredith), renowned for the quality of its custom-built Klipschorn soundsystem. “The album’s title sums up the vibe that you get from Rotation,” he explains. “It may be held in a landlocked venue but it gives a wonderful sense of isolation – it is an audiophile paradise.”

Meecham road-tested rough versions of the album’s eight tracks at Rotation 2023, with the feedback and dancefloor reaction guiding the sound and arrangement of the final mixes. Fittingly, Meecham will return to the event to showcase the album at Rotation 2024 this July. Given the inspiration he’s drawn from previous editions of the festival, that will be a very special occasion.

Musically, Island Boogie offers the most fully functioning and expertly constructed expression of The Emperor Machine sound yet, a style Meecham describes as “electronic cosmic disco-boogie”. It’s a sound that takes cues from early ‘80s NYC punk-funk and dub disco, vintage electro, proto-house and left-of-centre synth-boogie, but one that’s instantly recognisable to those who have followed Meecham’s career over the last three decades.

Island Boogie also sees Meecham continue his blossoming working relationship with Séverine Mouletin, whose stylish and distinctive vocals previously graced his popular ‘Dance Par Amour’ and ‘Your Own Style’ singles. Here Mouletin features on four tracks: the acid-flecked retro-futurist wave-boogie of ‘La Cassette’ (featuring additional percussion by Rupert Brown); the infectious, bleep-sporting headiness of recent single ‘Dévoilez-Vous’; and the squelchy analogue synth-funk of ‘Wanna Pop With You’ and ‘Vas-y-Le Chat’.

Meecham also finds space for a cover of Fox’s 1976 pop-rock classic ‘S-s-s-single Bed’, one of the Stafford-based artist’s all-time favourites. His version, featuring lead vocals by Michelle Bee and guitar from Dave Atherton, re-imagines the track as a subtly Chic-influenced slab of infectious electro-pop rich in kaleidoscopic synth sounds, sing-along choruses and shuffling drums.

The instrumental foundations of the classic Emperor Machine sound come to the fore on the album’s three other cuts. There’s the jazz-funk-flecked warmth of the LP-opening title track; the sparse squelches, bleeps, TB-303 style bass and brightly coloured electronics of ‘Walk The Dog’; and the exotic, slow-motion cosmic electronica of ‘Cha Murrah Etem’, a warm but poignant affair dedicated to his late father. Heady and intoxicating, with hints of Balearica and digital reggae, it offers a fittingly beautiful and tactile conclusion to Meecham’s most expressive and accessible album yet.

Emperor Machine - Vas-Y Le Chat feat. Séverine Mouletin

Emorold Anthony Phillip was born on the 7th of July 1941 in a little place called Cherry Hill in Grenada. He came to Trinidad at the age of five, on a Carnival Monday. Philip lived at Long Circular Road, Bel Vue in the capital city of Port of Spain. He attend the Mucurapo Boys RC primary school and later spent one term / semester at a private secondary school before his father died and he was unable to continue paying the tuition.

Phillip would pass through a number of odd jobs before settling on a career as a calypsonian. From a short stint at a Printery on Marine Square, to an electrician, then a mechanic and most telling a tailor, for it is here he was exposed once more to the calypso music his father had weaned him on, the tailors always having their radios on in the background while they worked on their profession. He started his illustrious career in a Calypso tent by the name of the 'Big Bamboo', which was on Park Street in Port of Spain. The Calypso tent was for guys who couldn't get into the big tents The Calypsonians who performed then, were 'Skipper', 'Creator' ,'Lord Inventor', 'Conqueror', and 'Young Creole', some of the top Calypsonians. This was in 1961 and his name then, was not 'Valentino' but 'Robin'.

The Robin would get his new name in December of 1965 when after an audition at Kitchener’s Revue Calypso tent, he announced to the gathering that he had no name, another calypsoninan having appropriated the name Robin earlier that year. Thus it was the great Lord Kitchener who bestowed the name Lord Valentino on Phillip. Later in the 1970’s during the revolutionary days of the Black Power movement, he would change his name to Brother Valentino. It was during this period too that fellow calypso stalwart, five time national monarch, the Black Stalin would give him the title ‘the People’s Calypsonian’.

Though only three times a national monarch finalist (and never winning the coveted crown) he would become the true spokesman for the people , the true opposition, the voice of conscience. His hits over the years include the immortal Life is a stage (1972), Barking Dogs (1974), Dis place Nice (1975), the best selling ‘Stay up Zimbabwe’ (1979), Birds that fly high (1982, Time and Space (1986),) Calypso in Trouble (1992) Time to love again (1996), The Radio (2001) and Where Kaiso went (2004) Valentino, now a veteran among calypso bards, is enjoying his second marriage, this time to former national netball played Peggy Castanada. He continues to be a role model for the new generation of younger singers who see him as the epitome of social consciousness, a direct descendant of the great chantwells of yesteryear – Executor, Atilla, Tiger and the beat goes on & on & on.

The Alkebulan Project is on a mission to change the perception of Africa an it's citizens.

Nigerian artist Villy and his group "Villy & The Xtreme Volumes" are on a mission to educate Africans with their message calling for a revolution in Africa, politically and socially in all aspects.
Philou has a combination of Congolese, Nigerian and Sierra Leonean heritage and it is in these roots that he has built his sound.

His passion for the continent of his ancestors is fervent and his projects are challenging commonly held preconceptions about Africa. His goal is to challenge negative stereotypes, by making African cultures more approachable through music.

Mating Ritual Recordings chief @martinhayes returns to RNT and once again shows his knack for simple yet effective selections and slices. Leaning a bit more toward up-tempo material than his previous RNT EP, “Turn You On” does indeed burn relentlessly hot, while “Love Shine” cruises along, alternating between an infectious electric piano vamp and driving percussion. “Easy Come Easy Go” strikes an optimistic and orchestral tone, sending us blissfully into space, and then “Tiff” rounds out the EP with it’s slow and soulful lilt.
