I think it’s important to say that a lot more women than you think have had one or multiple miscarriages. It’s just that it is a subject not often talked about because of the very personal pain that the couple go through. The unborn life has no contact with anybody else except the mother and the emotions are often only remembered by the mother and father.
When Jo and I were expecting our second child we were very excited and looking forward to having another Reeves in our growing family. I will never forget the day that we were told we were going to lose the baby and once told, left sitting in an open A & E waiting area having to cope with all our raw emotions and the prospect of the impending loss amongst the rest of the other patients.
Jo had to go through a painful operation to terminate the pregnancy and it is a day she will never forget. We were a family of three planning being a family of four having now to plan being a family of three recovering from an invisible loss and explain it to our young son.
It was an extremely difficult time but we were fortunate that after a few years we did have two more children. Jo tells me that although it is difficult to explain the connection she had with the unborn child that the presence of life inside her will never be forgotten.
I felt I couldn’t let this moment in our lives pass by without acknowledging our unborn child in some way. The rollercoaster of emotions we shared at that time from euphoria at increasing our family to devastation and bereavement at our loss were felt intensely only by Jo and myself played it’s part in forging the strong bond we have had throughout our relationship. 2024 has seen Dani and I getting to play in a room that just happens to have a full size grand piano. Its called the Organ room due to it housing a 200 year old pipe organ but we have kept our dirty little hands of that instrument. Ambergris is a 30 minute live performance based upon a 3-minute composition commissioned for the exhibition Apologue Isle, shown at Contemporary Art Tasmania in October and November 2024. The performance combined an extrapolated version of the original composition ( built from field recordings) with improvised bass guitar. Apologue Isle
An apologue is a moral fable, often using animals or non-human entities as the primary drivers of narrative.  The ‘apple isle’ was a nickname given to lutruwita/Tasmania to highlight the importance of the state’s apple export industry; with the first apple trees being planted by colonist William Bligh in 1788. These trees mark the beginning of industrial agriculture and extractive industry, and their subsequent impacts on the landscape and original inhabitants of lutruwita.   From these converging starting points, Apologue Isle aims to reframe the human perspective and create new stories that propose a world inhabited not by humans battling nature, but a complex, entwined system of objects, beings and space.  After many conceptual iterations, the project eventually began as an invitation. Five writers were asked to create a new story, with two simple requirements: it must refer to the natural world, and at least one character must be non-human. These stories were then transformed into sets, puppets were built, music composed and narration recorded.     The project unfolded like a surrealist exquisite corpse, each person building on the work of the one before, whilst retaining creative control over their own work. This aimed to enhance a sense of trust between collaborators through the giving over of ownership and acceptance of the other’s intent. 
The result is five unique stories, told through an unexpected array of characters, that reflect on what it means to live in our world at this moment in history. And alongside these stories is a burgeoning community of creative individuals, brought together through the shared ideas and ethics of the project.

Reaching the age of 60 can signal a difficult time in one’s future life but may also, if you so choose, be a time when there is much to which you can look forward. My wife Jo was 60 earlier this year and wasn’t wholly enamoured with the idea so, as a family, we decided to make it extra special for her. If anyone deserves to be spoilt rotten it is she, having had to put up with me for 37 years along with being the most wonderful Mother to 3 fantastic children. Our family means the world to her, especially since we were blessed with 2 beautiful grandchildren and what she loves most of all is having them gathered around her. Over the years, we have followed the Reeves’ tradition of making Christmas a time to push out the boat in right royal fashion and as soon as December begins our house is festooned with lights and decorations, creating a party atmosphere that stretches right into the early days of the New Year.
In the lyrics, you’ll find many references to moments that always bring a certain Yuletide brand of merriment. For example, our Golden Retriever, ‘Prince’ Marvin The Magnificent’, makes it his exclusive responsibility to collect Jo’s slippers as soon as her back is turned. Try as you might, he won’t let you have them back until He decides the time is right (see cover pic). For myself, I take on the combined mantle of Court Jester - without fail, the same jokes every year folks - and Dextrous Magician (hence ’Abracadabra!’). I have recently discovered a new audience for these sleights of hand (of which they never seem to tire) in the shape of said Grandchildren, Richard and Theo.
We eat and drink our fill, we laugh and we sing, for even in a world as mad as this there is always room for a month of unbridled fun, so you’ll certainly get no apology from me! If you can imagine such a thing, this year we have decided to crank things up a little to make it extra memorable for Jo, starting with this special song to celebrate all of the Christmas days she has known. She doesn’t know about it yet so let’s hope it’s the catalyst for her best one ever. For me, I’m sure they must all have been memorable, merely because Jo has been there to see them.

Être libre 

Je suis libre de penser de partir dans mes pensées
De me dépenser sans penser à demain car désormais je vibre
De plaisir quand je vois la liberté que j'attendais devenue réalité
Comme dans les livres que je lisais adolescent
Qui n'étaient pas indécents car ils évoquaient ce moment
Où l'homme aspire dans sa vie à être libre 
Loin des règles établies où l'on perd l'équilibre 
Mais je suis libre en fait de chanter à tue-tête
Et de prendre part à la fête si l'envie intrinsèque
Me prend soudainement je savoure pleinement 
Cet instant magique qui me libère en même temps

À l'idée d'être libre
Es-tu libre ? 

Je suis libre et m'émancipe depuis que j'ai compris
Que la vie était courte et que le périple 
Que l'on choisit de faire était pénible 
Si l'on vivait pour la gloire éphémère et terrible 
Alors j'ai décidé d'aller sur des voies difficiles
Plutôt que d'emprunter le chemin docile
Où la morale voudrait qu'on s'engage 
Et qu'on finit  par regretter quand on arrive à l'âge 
De raison car on voit bien les saisons
Qu'on a passé loin des siens et c'est alors que l'horizon 
S'éclaircit mais il est trop tard 
Pour remonter l'horloge et dissiper le brouillard

Je suis libre de trouver ce temps qui me délivre des tensions
Depuis que je prête attention à ma façon de vivre à ma façon de voir
Et à ma façon d'écrire vu que l'on embarque à bord de vaisseaux sinistres 
Qui laissent des marques en nous rendant si tristes
Car jamais on ne se démarque en étant défaitiste
Ainsi les bras ballants quelque part on ne résiste 
Plus à la pression car l'oppression nous terrorise 
Et on s'enlise dans une vie grise 
Dénuée de saveurs et d'aucune maîtrise 
En termes de choix  qui nous déséquilibre
En nous interdisant enfin d'être libre

Before the Storm

Live Reflexion #029

When https://soundcloud.com/dneye asked me for a track to play his fantastic guitars on, I brainstormed this 5/4 piece with odd chord set in order to make it difficult to him and thus get the best from his skills. After programming it, I added some organic solos (yep I played keys) to make it seem more friendly ;))))

And he... succeeded in the challenge, overcoming all my expectations !!!
