For their next release No.19 Music look once again to UK producer Eric Volta, who repeats his ‘Master of Puppets’ success by further collaborating with vocalist Gretz. The record features three stunning tracks and one reprise, all of which deal in Volta’s usual sense of keen synth artistry further enhanced by Gretz’s emotive vocal performance.
The title track ‘Blood Burgundy’ goes first and is a deep and emotional affair with low swinging claps, heart aching vocals that express serious emotional pain and plenty of rueful synth lines to tie it up in style. It’s a magical bit of music that is seriously melancholic at the same time as making you want to dance.
‘Concrete Jungle’ is a cut inspired by a Volta and Gretz shared, twisted night on Berlin’s streets. It’s a more experimental affair than the others here, with arpeggiated, pixelated melody lines, stepping beats and rubbery kick drums. Pained vocals float in the midst of the quickened groove and ethereal harpsichord notes linger in the background, drawing you in.
‘Against the Rain’ is a beautifully beatless affair filled with ambiance and a keen sense of loneliness. All sorts of glassy keys and slithering percussive sounds warp around each other, as do spraying bass synths, tinkling piano lines and feathery hi hats. It’s a turbulent brew full of atmosphere and it really draws you in to Volta’s unique world of sound.
Finally, ‘Blood Burgundy Reprise’ ends on another heartfelt note. This version of the track is much slower and more purposeful, almost collapsing under the weight of its own remorse. The vocal is placed front and centre and is expertly delivered for maximum emotive impact.
The music on this record has been dedicated to Eric’s uncle, and comes with this note from the established No.19 Music artist which gives some insight into the powerful blend of dancefloor sensibilities and emotional outpouring expressed on the release:
“This EP is for my Uncle Farid who heavily inspired my life with music. He was an amazing musician who lost much, including his ability to hear, yet regained it all with his big heart and courage. ”
‘Blood Burgundy’ is a truly heartfelt EP that expresses plenty of pain in beautifully musical ways. It’s rare that dance music reaches such solemn heights, yet Eric Volta does so with an expert ear and lingering sense of emotion that stays with you long after the EP finishes playing.

Art Departments Natural Selection album is the gift that keeps on giving, with recent stunning remixes by DJ Tennis and Chaim of Walls now followed by an excellent mix package of Kisses for Roses. The remix duties for this latest offering come courtesy of US house stars The Martinez Brothers and Bostonian funk masters Soul Clap. First to step forward on this new Kisses for Roses remix package are Objektivity aligned pair The Martinez Brothers, who also run their own Tuskegee Music label with Seth Troxler. Energetic and hugely talented in the booth and the studio, there are few hotter acts in the world right now. Their take on the Art Department original is a robust, kicking house track with tons of kinetic energy, barreling drums and spritely synths that squelch about at a high tempo. Its a big hitting, high impact version with a real sense of emotion coming from the pained vocals and is sure to soar this summer. Little needs to be said of funk champions Soul Clap, who as well as running their own label, being part of Crew Love, releasing on Wolf & Lamb and collaborating with George Clinton are also revered DJs who have spun at every party worth its salt. Here they turn out two versions, the first is a loose limbed, soul infused and mid tempo house jam with muffled voices adding plenty of atmosphere to the track. Funky drums, crisp percussion and squelchy synths all make for a charmingly steamy yet sensitive rework and the spoken word vocals really finish it off in style. Their second version is a dub that is even deeper, more sensuous and seductive with its humid pads and gloopy, snaking synths.

The fourth of Art Departments Natural Selection remix packages is set to drop in August with the arrival of Crazy. This time, those chosen to add their own unique spin on the huge and still popular original are none other than Jamie Jones and Dennis Ferrer. First up is Jamie Jones, the king of his own much loved musical empire in the form of Hot Creations. As well as being an award winning DJ and producer, he also performs live with Hot Natured and runs his own key night at DC10 in the form of Paradise. Here the Welshman lays down one of his fat trademark basslines and injects trippy, colourful melodies. Classic sounding, airy hi hats and subtly worked vocal patches add plenty of heat and drama to the groove, and a sci-fi breakdown is sure to send the dance floor wild, especially once Jones drums kick once more. On the flipside US musical heavyweight Dennis Ferrer takes the reigns as he delivers his own take on Crazy. The New York based DJ, producer and label owner has truly left his mark on the dance music landscape over the last two decades with his Objektivity imprint kick starting the career of the Martinez Brothers and his own records helping to define house music. Here his remix is an expertly stripped back, shuffling house number that goes deep. Synths spiral around, the bass comes on from way down below and Ferrers treatment of the vocals adds an air of mystery that is genuinely hypnotising

The vital No.19 Music continues to serve up essential club weapons, this time with a hotly anticipated offering from the legendary DJ Sneak.

DJ Sneak is an original Chicago house gangster who pioneered the filter house sound and has continued to evolve and adapt over the ensuring years. His I’m A House Gangster label is a go to outlet for high quality, ‘floor rocking grooves and his own powerful sets continue to blow crowds away around the world. Now he’s back with what is sure to become a surefire summer anthem and one of his biggest tracks to date.

The brilliantly frenzied ‘Psycho Killer’ features re-recorded Talking Heads vocals by Franco- American Charlie Sputnik. His standout delivery captures the tortured, freaky feeling of the original as gliding drums and hits form the groove below. Overdriven percussion adds to the intensity of a cut that is guaranteed to make a huge impact in any set. The track has already been creating quite a stir, featuring in the sets of Jamie Jones, Ricardo Villalobos and Art Department at the likes of Amnesia and Kappa Festival, whilst Eats Everything has given the record an early preview on BBC Radio 1.

Alongside the original is an excellent raver dub, which is more stripped back with the focus on the driving house groove and a free roaming, brain-melting bassline that snakes down below. It’s another high-octane track that will blow up the party. A radio edit is also included with some wild guitars layered in for extra madness.

The influential No.19 label will kick off 2019 in style with a fantastic new EP from respected Russian artist Tripmastaz.

Hailing from an industrial region known as the Detroit of Russia, this artist serves up non-standard grooves on labels like Cocoon, Minus and Desolat. He also runs four of his own hotly tipped vinyl labels and has worked in the studio with giants like DJ Sneak and Ricardo Villalobos when not playing headline gigs at the world's finest clubs, or on platforms like the recent Boiler Room in St. Petersburg.

Opening his latest and greatest EP is ‘Dimaggio’s Black Hole’, a nine-minute opus that locks you into a slick and nimble electronic groove. Dubby chords bring warmth and razor sharp hi hats cut up the drums and keep you on your toes. It’s one to build the pressure and send the floor to the next level. The equally excellent ‘Mr Ohh’ is built on chunky, heavy drums, with a mind-melting lead synth line burrowing deep. The intensity grows throughout and is sure to have a rapturous effect on the crowd.

Tripmastaz’s uniquely stylish aesthetic shows up again on ‘Dreezy Benz Dubb’, but this time in more playful fashion. The drums skip and the percussion is loose, with molten keys ringing down the face of this lively and house leaning weapon. Last of all, ‘Reminiscin’ (Dub)’ is a perfect slice of deep and dubby house music, a timeless piece with precision sound design and an understated yet infectious groove.

With this release, No.19 Music continues its hot streak, reminding us all of why its unique brand of house music has stood at the forefront of the scene for a decade.

Jonny White’s acclaimed Art Department alias continues to serve up essential house music with a new package featuring a standout original as well as remixes from Damian Lazarus, Clive Henry and Nitin & Down 2 feat. Lorenzo Dada.

Art Department continued to light up the world’s best clubs and festivals throughout 2018 and into 2019. He also served up vinyl chart topping EPs on No.19 and Kerri Chandler’s Kaoz Theory that showed his style is constantly evolving, always connecting the dots between the past, present and future, finding fresh new ground in the house sphere. This new track comes as a fantastic live version with a typically on- point selection of remixes.

The lead single, ‘Normalizm,’ is a brilliantly elastic piece of house music, with infectious and busy drums setting a playful mood. Fat synths warp around the beats and the whole thing has a restlessness to it that cannot fail to make you move. Scene mainstay and Crosstown Rebels’s driving creative force Damian Lazarus steps up with a remix that fantastically reworks the track into eight darkly involving minutes of synth laden intensity. The drums twist and turn, and the pads bring real late night emotion to the groove.

Circoloco resident and producer of some of house music’s chunkiest sounds Clive Henry then steps up. His well-constructed remix flips the track into something deep, liquid and stripped back. It’s a fluid groove for intimate after parties that really gets under your skin.

Last of all, label co-owner Nitin joins forces with the enigmatic Down 2 for a remix that features keys from classically trained pianist, and respected producer in his own right, Lorenzo Dada. Recorded at Zee’s infamous studio facility in Toronto, this perfect final piece of the puzzle is beautifully spaced out and delicate. The keys are tender and emotive and the rolling drums get you lost in a cinematic and widescreen reverie.

This is a wonderfully varied package that covers plenty of musical ground, and marks another high point from the always on point Art Department and No.19 Music.

Hot on the heels of the recent Normalizm EP and 4-tracker that topped vinyl charts for Kerri Chandlers Kaoz Theory, Art Department drops a 3 track vinyl-only offering for this year’s Record Store Day, simply titled ‘A Record For Records Sake’. The release kicks off with a warm, filtered and looped sample work out featuring disco guitar licks and a simple, infectious key melody executed in typically raw Art Department fashion. The song comes with a “Dolled Up Mix” which sees subtle changes in filter work and mixdown to extract  a different emotion from the record. The EP closes with a straight forward house offering in “d’igualada “, a stripped back and deep affair with muted jazz undertones and relentless rhythm section. A perfect vinyl contribution to celebrate Record Store Day from the veteran Art Department.

Renowned international craftsman Maher Daniel returns to No. 19 Music with a fantastic new EP that also comes with standout remixes from Art Department, plus label regular JADE (CA).

Daniel has been building his own vinyl only label, The Other Side with a series of slick releases that come after other outings on the likes of Circus, 8Bit and of course No.19 Music. He has taken his label to showcases everywhere from the Caribbean to Beirut and always cooks up infectious club sounds in the studio. Alongside this he has a vinyl only edits series called Creature that has consistently sold out upon release. Aside from his production and DJ work he is a central figure in the industry and has a long standing history with the No.19 crew.

Here he opens with the excellent ‘A Heart That Beats You’ which is utterly captivating across ten minutes of sleek minimal house. It’s a deep track with rubbery drums and spooky synth designs that hook you in and never let you go. Steamy vocals layer in another element that makes it all the more standout. ‘Hidden Messages’ is another expertly intricate track with slippery synths and drums, minute little effects and drum fills and a restless groove of which Villalobos would be proud.

The first of the remixes comes from label boss Art Department, who is enjoying a superb run of releases of late, including standout records for Cassy’s Kwench and The Martinez Brother’s Cuttin’ Headz label. His version of ‘A Heart That Beats You' is a superb late night house cut with warm, colourful chords and a soulful vocal that build the tension until the whole thing drops and sets the club alight. Canadian DJ/producer JADE (CA), a long-time friend of the label, then steps up. Deep, dark bass lines accompanied by solid hi hat patterns sink you into a state of hypnosis and make for another one of this fine talent’s trademark tracks.

This is a forward looking house EP of masterfully cultured club sounds.

Maher Daniel - A Heart That Beats You (JADE (CA) Remix) PREVIEW

No.19 Music welcomes back long-time associate Louie Fresco for a first solo EP since 2014, with standout remixes from Bas Ibellini and Shaun Reeves making this another fantastic package.

Fresco debuted on this label in 2012, and since then has served up the essential Autophobia album in 2014 and two further EPs. After a couple of quiet years, the Mexican tastemaker is back with more of his hard to categorise house and tech tunes, once again bringing plenty of quality to the table.

Fantastic opener ‘Black Wax’ is a heavyweight deep house tune with swirling pads and edgy stabs. A muffled vocal adds an old school feel and this one really builds the mood nicely. 'Aliens (Black Wax Pt.2)’ is another super fresh offering, this time with a slinky, futuristic and upbeat tech feel that has a spaced out vibe and killer bassline. The excellent ‘Between Boroughs’ then layers up punchy broken beat patterns with romantic sax lines and crisp hits into a timeless house track perfect for intimate clubs who like their music to have a real sense of heart.

First to remix ‘Black Wax’ is Bas Ibellini, the Tuskegee and Crosstown Rebels artist and founder of the Peculiar party. His version is filled with subtle tension, leggy drums and deep looping bass that keeps on pulling you in as the pressure mounts. Last of all, Visionquest man, Detroit tastemaker and key underground figure Shaun Reeves reworks the same track into something superbly deep and horizontal, with echoing hits and distant, spooky pads bringing a heady, cosmic feel.

These are five first class house tracks with a real sense of style.

G Flame aka Cisco Ferreira, is the solo artist behind the legendary project, The Advent, which originally included former production partner Mr G. He has long been a pivotal player in the development of house and techno, as a DJ, producer and also an engineer working with greats like Larry Heard, Derrick May and Adonis. Cisco has released on seminal labels such as Jack Tracks, R&S, Novamute and Tresor, has remixed New Order and always brings a unique musical vision to his work.

The legendary G Flame moniker was originally used for Ferreira’s more house infused, techno sound, something he developed in the early 90s. Says the artist, “Back then there were very few tech house tracks being released. At the time I called it 'house techno’ as my main vibe was always house music first, with added techno spice and faster BPMS for DJs.” That description is a simple but effective one that sums up the visceral power of this new record, a record which features tracks predominantly written between 1992 and 1999.

The first two cuts are previously unreleased gems, opening with the ducking and diving drums and intense synth work of 'I Want You', and followed by the old school 909 workout of piano-infused house, ’Freetown.’ The buzzing low frequencies of ‘Broken’ burrows deep into your brain and was released as a single on this label this summer, then come previously vinyl only classics ‘Thoughts’ which brings brilliant dynamics and a pulsing bassline that is overlaid with trippy melodic motifs and sci-fi details, and 'Up All Night,’ which is ghetto house perfection with its bristling drums and percussion, knotted bass and frenzied vocal stabs.

The final four previously unreleased tunes kick off with ‘Lynn Grooves’, a perfectly reduced piece of rubbery techno to get you in a sweat, and ’Stringer,’ another urgent and compelling house cut that races along on slapping drums and scraping hits while subtle vocal sounds add soul to the power of the machines. The stellar ‘Turnmills’, is a loopy, chunky and futuristic wedge of sci-fi tech that is sure to make you march and last of all, the fantastic '6am' is a zoned out affair with far sighted cosmic chords, bumping kicks and more tender vocal sounds that finds, like the rest of the album, a perfect sweet spot between house and techno.

This is an essential collection of music from an artist who has been at the very heart of the house and techno scene for the last three decades, and is sure to enthral both his industry acolytes and new fans alike. It also marks another high point for the ever impressive No.19 Music as we close out 2020.
