Strangelove’s personal inventory of NZ 1980’s odd pop; ‘Kiwi Animals’ recasts the local charts in a parallel universe of misfit melodics, gonzo-tronics & strange waves. Channeling South Pacific voodoo and edge of world melancholia, the album highlights electronic tangents from iconic NZ groups Blam Blam Blam & Headless Chickens. It dredges the cassette revelations of art avante-gardists’ Drone & Kim Blackburn, alongside bittersweet moments from Rupert & Norma O’Malley. There’s the infectious minimal wave of Ballare and a reprised electro-boogie dance suite (?!) from Tom Ludvigson & Graeme Gash. The furthest depths of Flying Nun’s catalog are also plundered- a brilliant earworm from Stiff Herbert and a mysterious “Roger” Knox birthday promo. Mining disparate seams of a local indie label awakening, the various tangents of ‘Kiwi Animals’ congeal with a future/primitive sensibility and an underlying Antipodean mischievousness…

Martin Rev’s fifth solo album – Strangeworld – was released on the cusp of the new millennium. The label responsible was Puu, a Finnish imprint belonging to Tommi Grönlund and Mika Vainio’s Sähkö Recordings which came to fame in the 1990s on the strength of its uncompromising minimalist sound.
Four years earlier, in 1996, Rev had unleashed See Me Ridin, an album which surprised its listeners with keyboard melody sketches and distilled doo-wop compositions. It was also the first solo album to feature Martin Rev on vocals.
Strangeworld started where its predecessor left off. Melodic passages dissolved into a thicket of fragments and set pieces, coalescing in a celestial shimmer between rhythm loops and Rev’s voice, which assumed the role of an additional instrument rather than a standard singing part.

« This time last year I was focusing on my travel to Japan. Never thought it'd sound so unreal one year later. Most of the time I was travelling with 10 kilo records on my back, to sell and trade, and sometimes I had to take secondary subway lines to non-touristic areas. Seeking record shops in Japan can be a tough task, because they're often hidden into buildings with only a small store sign. You can easily spend 10 minutes finding the entrance while being at the correct address. Sometimes I met an owner who knew my record label. It's always special to meet someone who appreciates your work that far away from home. It gives you the energy to go on. »
