Local Suicide and Skelesys join forces for the 9th release on London clubnight and record label, Snap, Crackle & Pop, delivering a throbbing, hypnotic dive into the darkest recesses of electro and techno. A hard-hitting remix from Autumns provides a more club driven assault on title track You are Mine whilst The KVB glide through a new-beat influenced take on Naked and Confused.

Of the release, Local Suicide sum up the chance writing process with Skelesys: "The second time we ever met up with Skelesys was a few years ago at a party at Griessmuehle. After the party - although we hardly knew each other - slightly intoxicated we decided to come back to ours and make a track. The story of Frankenstein as a dream girl was born, You Are Mine.
The second track was created after a Sunday afternoon at Berghain. There was a power cut that lasted pretty long and everyone was Naked & Confused.
Built To Fail is one of the last tracks we created together. It’s about living in Berlin, not fitting into the notion of what successful or normal people are supposed to be like, but not giving a damn.
Making music with Skelesys is always so much fun and effortless. We share the same vision and music taste and when we’re together in the studio everything makes sense."

Escaping was a necessity; living in a concrete jungle made her feel trapped, at times as though she were fighting for breath. Whether it was the peace of the countryside or the paradisiacal surroundings of the beach, these places gave her a sense of renewal, refreshing her mind and her senses. This would only last as long as the trips did, it was a sad truth that the rejuvenation would soon dissipate as she stepped back into the rat race. 

As is their annual tradition, in December Leipzig's R.A.N.D. Muzik Recordings marked the end of another year with a VA compilation featuring music from fresh faces and old friends. Swirling around the sounds central to the label - breaks, house, electro and techno - the four-track EP calls on the talents of R.A.N.D regular Tim Schlockermann and new blood Adam Strömstedt, Barney In The Tunnel and Olsvangèr.

Fleck E.S.C - Rough Silk [Central Processing Unit]

For more than a decade now, Fleck E.S.C. has marked himself out as one of the most playful and prolific producers in the electro game. Across dozens of releases for labels including Bass Agenda and Science Cult, the France-born, Japan-based artist has made his name through a production style which balances limber beats with exploratory textural work.

Fleck E.S.C. debuted on Central Processing Unit in 2018 with the Discrete Opinion EP. Now, after stopping by the Sheffield label last year on a Silicon Scally remix job, Fleck E.S.C. delivers his second EP for CPU in the form of Rough Silk. The record’s intriguing title proves an apt introduction to this four-track affair. These cuts are at once sleek and abrasive, anchored by robotechnic machine-funk grooves yet also full of strange, shifting shapes.

The opening title-track expertly sets out Rough Silk’s stall. Heralded by gurgling synths and all manner of whirring percussive tones, ‘Rough Silk’ blossoms around the minute mark with the introduction of a wickedly buoyant lead synth. This is music at once visceral and full of mystery, the sound of wending through the back alleys, and the feeling carries through to the following cut ‘Hat in the Cat’ - as the synth pads spool out overhead, the machine-funk snap of the beat has an almost aquatic quality that links it back to Drexciya.

Much like ‘Rough Silk’, the record’s first B-side ‘Faking Sweet’ also shifts gears. The opening strains of the track seem to be preparing for another insistent, expansive broken-beat pulse, but it stiffens its neck around ninety seconds in. Programmed drums whirr around a jittery machine-gun bass while discordant synths pull at the edges of the track, all of which brings a strong dystopian energy that increases further as the percussion sounds become increasingly bug-eyed.

After so much excitement, ‘Digger Play’ closes out the EP with a softer touch. There’s still plenty of low-slung bounce to the beat, but the track runs a little slower, and there’s a warm wistfulness in the synths which gives ‘Digger Play’ a painterly, almost poetic feel. However, while it may take its foot off the gas, the production here is as deft as it is everywhere else on Rough Silk.

With new EP Rough Silk, electro whizz Fleck E.S.C. brings the sort of casual mastery to proceedings that has characterised his career to date.

Back in 1968 a pair of Germanic behind-the-scenes sound librarians called Horst Ackermann and Heribert Thusek left a tiny, but indelible, pinprick on the history of German pop in the misshaped form of a sexy horror cash-in concept album called Dracula’s Music Cabinet. Shelved at a micro-cosmic axis where Krautrock meets lesbian vampire Horrortica and easy listening meets psychedelia the delayed reaction of this mutant concoction eventually exploded in the mid-1990s in the hands of a generation of ‘record diggers’ sending currency- crushing tremors through the wallets of mods, rockers, hip hoppers, psych nuts and kraut kompletists around the plastic-pillaging planet. The vinyl junkies had resurrected a monster, but, like addicts do, they ravenously sucked it dry and moved on looking for the next fix to feed their habit.

Luckily for some, Ackermann and Thusek were also creatures of habit. And it wouldn’t take a genius to figure out that they were holding the next dose, but by the turn of the millennium the mad scientists had been given a thirty-five-year head start on the pop archeologists and their mythical sequel was literally light-years ahead of their previous draconian installment… Encouragingly the unclosed cabinet left a shiny white clue in the form of it’s closing track Frankenstein Meets Alpha 7… Perhaps space was the place.

Always read the label. The Ackermann and Thusek duo were far from dynamic. They were undercover agents hiding behind user-friendly mock-rock monikers and, like most B-Musicians, the only way to sniff them out would be to read the small print. But when an unidentified record on an unknown label with a title like Science Fiction Dance Partycrops up in the Eins Deutschmark crates it’s not exactly rocket science – although the track titles might suggest otherwise. The End Of A Robot, Monster On Saturn 1, Galactic Adventures Of The Outer Space Fleet , The Whistling Astronauts, Death Rays Out Of The Universe… The telltale signs are all there and if that vintage psycoplasmodic coloured vinyl didn’t clench the deal then what will. When rumours about a space age follow-up to Dracula’s Music Cabinet hit the straße Deutsche-o-phile diggers fingers started twitching nervously.

Science Fiction Corporation - Man Out Of A Test Tube

LDI Records serves up a celebration of The Hague’s famous electro sound with native Cliff Dalton aka Sander Evers behind four originals and fellow West Coast legends Legowelt and Rude66 both remixing.

Cliff Dalton is a relatively new project from a long-time Dutch music great. Sander Evers is the drummer in psychedelic stoner rock band Monomyth and has played with other notable groups including 35007 and Gomer Pyle. Next to those projects, he has always had his ear tuned into the region’s enduring techno and electro scene and now offers up his own fresh take on it. The EP’s title refers to the fact that all these artists are bound by geography, but is also a nod to the fact that The Hague is the largest Dutch city by the sea.

The opener ‘We Are The Little Ones’ is about an evil robot factory in a futuristic dystopian city. It is a coruscated electro-funk workout with crisp analogue drums and nimble bass overlaid with withering sci-fi melodies. ‘We Don’t Need A Real World’ is a superbly cinematic eight-minute excursion with widescreen synth work taking you to the stars as you ride an elastic bassline. The majestic ‘City Under The Sea‘ then layers up neck-snapping snares with cosmic arps and plunging bass and ‘Cleopatra’s Matrix’ soundtracks an ancient Egyptian city with its mystic leads and eerie pads luring you into a late-night electro trance.

West Coast pin-up and hugely prolific electronic innovator Legowelt remixes ‘We Are the Little Ones‘. His version has plenty of his textbook intrigue, lo-fi texture and magical synth charm, and finally key Bunker Records associate Rude 66 flips ‘City Under The Sea’ into a snaking dub rhythm with hypnotic acid lines and seductive vocal whispers woven in deep.

The Blue City EP is a timeless package of West Coast electro direct from the source.

Microfeel

Fanzine Records proudly invites Nullptr, the alter ego of Eddie Symons, to the label. We are happy to have him on board to deliver our 10th vinyl release. The Brit has a career that spans over two decades, and he currently heads his own label [d]-tached, while co-promoting Cambridge-based electro night Motherchip Connexion.

The 5-track project kicks off with EP title sharing doozy "ALOPEX". The cut has an underlying dub sound and snappy claps and hits. A futuristic synth comes in that sounds like an emotional robot. It progresses nicely, with a broad range of elements including modulated toms and cymbals, before flipping into a revolving melody and fleeting flicks.

It is followed up with "CN2", and you can feel from the get-go a track with a little more Tabasco sauce. It has a bit more energy and that gutter sound, which is very prevalent. Again, the piece has those snappy electro hits and has this mischievous synth oscillating in the background. The main squeeze here though is the gutter.

Things seem to lighten up with "GeneRec" as it is introduced with an ethereal synth with some deep chords. Elements gradually get introduced as a bit more pace is added with the hats. It has subdued electro vibrations and swirling modulations. A bit of a deeper cut, it could be dropped at any early morning rave.

Before the finale, we have "Wake-Sleep" which has a very sweet synth hanging over it. It has high pitched keys and bumpy rolling beats. It has modulated plucking's which are nearly akin to an early beastie boys sound, it's texture with aspects being taken in and out.

Last, but certainly not least, we have "HEXQ". This cut has a hallowed synth that floats over the electro elements. It has a bit of everything, tinging hits, gutter vibrations, robotic stabs, and melancholic chords in-between that add a speckle of emotion. The synth gives it a down-tempo feel, but make no mistake, it's a layered production that any electro fan would dig.

We already knew Mufti's impressive skills for rework and edit original tracks that's why we  suggested him to edit the original masterpiece from Topo & Roby "Under The Ice". 

"In this edit I filtered some stuff out of the track and added some new beats, new bass and some synths. Had a lot of fun working on this hit by Topo & Roby".
