Noémi Büchi’s debut album ‘Matter’ captures the tension between growth and decay, consonance and dissonance, mirroring Büchi’s own catharsis through music. Her most personal material to date, ‘Matter’ is an opus of refined, sculpted beauty, one that aims to blur the distinction between ephemerality and physicality. Inspired by late romantic classical music and early 20th century contemporary music, ‘Matter’ is driven by the compositional methodologies of Igor Stravinsky, Alexander Skrjabin, Gustav Mahler and György Ligeti to modern sound forms, adapting and expanding upon their ideas in an awe-inspiring exploration of cutting-edge potency and tactility.

Büchi structures the electronic works that constitute ‘Matter’ in movements, stratifying myriad instrumental parts like the constituent sections of an orchestra. During her work on the album, Büchi engaged in extensive research, obsessively studying specific chords and progressions, and searching for transcendent intonations with resonant properties; complexions of sound with the ability to connect with the listener’s body. Transforming our inner worlds into zones of suspension and levitation, Büchi exposes the listener to intoxicating slipstreams of sound. Prominent voices ascend, tectonic disturbances threaten the foundations, perception and sensation becomes subject to elemental countercurrents and inversions. ‘Matter’ illustrates the fraught pursuit of momentary equilibrium, and makes the fragility of euphoria tangible.

Composer & sound artist Noémi Büchi creates electronic, symphonic maximalism. Her music is defined by delicate electronic-orchestral forms and textural rhythms. She strives for a combination of harmonic and dissonant sonorities, to evoke both intellectual and emotional euphoria. Büchi has appeared on the Light of Other Days and Visible Dinner labels, and is now an affiliate of -OUS, releasing ‘Hyle’ her debut EP on the label in spring 2022. As well as her solo output, Noémi Büchi is currently working with Feldermelder on their collaborative project Musique Infinie. Their debut album will also be released via -OUS in the near future.

Following her recent album ‘Does It Still Matter’, Noémi Büchi returns to -OUS with ‘Liquid Bones’, a five-track EP that interlaces sound and poetry, inspired by a verse written by her mother, artist Marie-Christine Büchi:«In the heatgesticulate elasticallytheir bodiesdisappointing the desire to last.»With ‘Liquid Bones’, Noémi Büchi lays her focus on simplicity. ‘Liquid Bones’ marks a directional shift in Büchi’s approach: while her previous albums put structure in the foreground and distinguished themselves through high density, the new material seems lighter and even playfully teases the listener with pop elements, albeit without loosing the conceptual depth that has carved out Büchi’s singular position in today’s musical landscape.

The piano, an instrument Büchi has been embra-cing for the better part of the past two decades, serves as a recurring theme on the five-track EP. Serving as a form-giving and shape-shifting instrument, Büchi extracts a diverse range of sounds: a leading motif, a voice-like element, percussive patterns, atmospheric textures. These are combined with mi-nimal electronics, orchestral sounds, crisp digital textures and Büchi’s signature method of punctuating the compositions with noise accentuations, thus creating a highly dynamic listening experience.

The closing track, finally, introduces Joséphine de Weck’s poetic voice, adding an intimate layer to the EP. Actress and writer de Weck has been the ‘face’ of Büchi’s current audiovisual live show, in which she grants a seemingly intimate view into the actress’ mind. Their track ‘Fair Enough’ expands this collaboration to the next stage.As a whole, ‘Liquid Bones’ continues Noémi Büchi’s study of matter, form and structure. By examining their im-permanence and transience, Büchi emphasises the temporary nature of being.

Noémi Büchi is a Swiss composer and sound artist that creates electronic, symphonic maximalism. Her music is defined by a delicate synthesis of textural rhythms and electroacoustic-orchestral abstraction. 

Büchi explores the potential of consonance and dissonance, contrasts rhythmic physicality with disruption and playfully emphasizes irregularities, creating an expansive listening experience marked by detail and elevation. 

"My piece Paroxysm starts from a puristic dry rhythmic structure. The second part then goes into a fusion of rhythm and harmony. The question that preoccupied me was on one hand how these two main elements of music relate to each other and what shapes they can create together. On another hand I was preoccupied by how the listening behaviour adapts and changes to the compositional structure and sound events. 

The sound world in this piece is characterised by warm, dense, orchestral and at the same time by very filigree, dry, electro-acoustic sounds. I also used my own voice in interlaced harmonic shapes that are made rhythmic, giving the overall mood an almost sacral character. My voice appears fragmental and tries to assert itself in the complexity of the rhythm. Slowly everything degrades into polyrhythmic structures, with harmonic components taking the upper hand more and more. The listening behaviour is redirected here. The harmonies are repeatedly broken abruptly by the rhythm.

I work across genres in my music. Familiar elements from classical music, jazz, folk and also techno can be recognised. There is nature, and the outside world to hear, made of plastic, metal, wood, water and earth. The subject of matter continues to occupy me in my musical work, and I try to get as close as possible to the physical world through sound.

I’m very concerned about the method of reduced listening. It is a way of listening that focuses on the character of each individual sound shapes without carrying about their sources or meanings. Also, this kind of listening is about specifically picking out the individual elements, distinguishing them from each other, and understanding their relationship to each other. I cultivate a special interest in such listening techniques because on one hand I really appreciate to create structures that make sense to me in a very raw compositional understanding, and on the other hand these kind of techniques teach me to go within and focus with deep conscious concentration. It is very similar to meditation and trains and shapes our whole consciousness, and thus our connection to reality. At the end what interests me precisely how the listening behaviour changes according to the sounding event. I find it fascinating how sound guides us and how we unconsciously adapt our perception to the sound happenings. With deep listening, one can consciously focus on such phenomena and suddenly explore and get to know previously unexplored things about the unconscious. It is as if one gets to know oneself in depth during this process, like in a deep meditation."

Noémi Büchi is a Swiss/French composer and sound artist that creates electronic, symphonic maximalism. Her music is defined by a delicate synthesis of textural rhythms and electroacoustic- orchestral abstraction. She explores the potential of consonance and dissonance, contrasts rhythmic physicality with disruption and playfully emphasizes irregularities, creating an expansive listening experience marked by detail and elevation.
After her studies in electroacoustic composition, musicology and german literature, she already played at various festivals and was awarded a culture prize of the city of Zürich. Her 2019 debut EP ‘Matière’, released through Light of Other Days, drew widespread acclaim. In 2020, she released a second EP ‘Prismic Passages’ on the Leipzig- based tape label Visible Dinner. -OUS Records will be releasing her debut album ‘Matter’ and its prelude ‘Hyle’ in 2022, as well as the debut album of Musique Infinie, a collaboration between Noémi Büchi and Swiss/Italian composer and installation artist Feldermelder.

The 10-minute electroacoustic piece "Reality is the shining of a gem through the chink of a door" is conceived like a painting, without linear progression, without climax, existing rather as a state of perception. Inspired by Francis Bacon’s dissociated bodies, the ambivalent longing for intimacy, and fragile silence, the piece shapes itself into a multi-layered sonic surface. It works with inner tension, voices, noises, and silence pulse beneath the surface, yet no gesture rises into a scream.
The work is conceived as a complex sound collage, built from fragmented recordings sourced from social media, with a particular focus on the human voice. It is not the content itself, but its presence, textures, proximity, and distance that are brought to the fore.

Chains of communication do not appear here as linear conduits of information, but as fleeting, porous spaces in which meanings blur and shift. The overabundance of data is not staged as overload, but as a dissociative state.

Reality appears through cracks, freed from the shackles of mental captivity, which is nourished by the “Passions Tristes” amplified by social media: envy, fear, hatred, absurdity, and pressure.
