I produced this piece for the "Creatures" Episode of BBC Radio 4's Short Cuts. It features Samar Nasrullah Khan, whose History and Philosophy of Science Master's thesis is titled "Listening, with dairy cows".

For Samar’s final research project in the Netherlands they asked to be supervised by a linguist, Leonie Cornips, who had recently turned her attention towards studying the language of animals – cows in particular. Over the course of six weeks of fieldwork at Dutch dairy farms, Samar was surprised to find themselves being involved in the conversations the cows were having and set out to philosophically investigate how this is possible, and what this means for our relationship to agricultural animals and land.

What does it mean to use our bodies to listen? How does our idea of language limit or expand our understanding of who (or what) we can and should be listening to? Who and what do we deign able to "speak", to have a voice?

Sit back, close your eyes and picture yourself in a mixed woodland by a small pond at dawn. 90 minutes of dawn chorus from 3rd May 2020 edited to 11 minutes. A very faint tawny owl and a couple of mallard can be heard just before first light followed (I'm told by those who know more than me) by robin, blackbird, thrush, blackcap, wren, goldfinch and blue tit with pheasant, herring gull, carrion crow, jackdaw, wood pigeon and moorhen pitching in also.  A pair of swans make a guest flypast at the end. Still some rough edges to smooth out.
