CTHULHU MYTHOS - LIFELESS

What if sonic practice were not only artistic expression, but a mode of critical reflection — a way to generate knowledge about the positionality of both producer and listener?
To explore this, I invited the artists I interviewed to contribute sound samples — fragments from their production process — to build a collective sound “database.” With this samples gbw9, Melag0m, Kurzschluss, Mahée and HAUSVRAU produced soundpieces - which are released in the format of this compilation.
Here, sound is activated as a method: both a tool of knowledge and a relational medium. The resulting sample pack reflects diverse sonic practices and acts as a collaborative, affective archive.

Infestation as Sonic Resistance
I use the term infestation to describe how certain practices — deemed disruptive by dominant standards — disturb normative structures, much like weeds invading a manicured garden. Infestation stands for persistent, collective disruptions that challenge the status quo.
This concept ties into anti-capitalist modes of music production. By embracing collaboration, shared authorship, and relationality, the sample pack resists neoliberal values of individualism and competition. It becomes a sonic commons: a space for co-creation, not extraction.
INFESTATIONcan be thought of as a harmful seed, a seed that grows subtly, slowly. The sounds creep in sideways — rough edges, broken rhythms, distorted textures. Infestation is when sounds start growing in the cracks. Cultivated through collaboration, Infestation values disturbance, tension, connection, shared creation and finding new paths.
Some artists in this compilation are boycotting Spotify due to its investments in the arms industry. In solidarity, we are releasing the project exclusively via alternative platforms like SoundCloud and Bandcamp.

Born Of Stars by Alchemeon, from Alchemeon Live In Session Winter 2008-09.

The audio file for this song was plagued with hundreds, maybe thousands, of corrupted waves. These ranged in sound from a very big click at the small end of the scale, to something akin to trousers being ripped when bending over in a Carry On movie at the large end of the scale.

The audio file is now massively better than it was. A few blemishes and some sounds not unlike that of a scratchy old vinyl record still exist in places.

Repairing the damaged audio file for this song was an incredibly time-consuming and tedious task. It required massive amounts of the wave forms to be redrawn by hand in tiny, tiny detail.

The first time we attempted to repair it, the work was almost finished when the main hard drive on the mastering machine lost the will to live and mangled itself beyond all recognition. We had to buy a new one and completely reinstall the entire system.

All the repair work already done to Born of Stars was therefore utterly destroyed. It had to be done again from the start. Fortunately, as we are reasonably diligent with regard to backing up our work, no other files were lost.

This is why the Winter version of Born of Stars appeared two years after the rest of the album was released!

* Born of Stars is a highly rifftastic space rock song in the key of E.
* Several sections are deliberately left quite loose to allow for improvisation.
* The lyrics also tend to vary from one version to another.
* Born of Stars was performed by the Spacegoats, including in their brief “Electric Elves” manifestation.

Prayer For The Departed

I like recording short snatches of radio from my Fieldkit and I used one for this week's project. The brief asked for a tortured sound so I performed a variety of mashing, slowing and speeding up, saturating and reverbing until the string sample became a dirty wall of noise. The track starts with the end result and then morphs into the original sample. The audio degradation then proceeds in the order they were applied with the resulting wavs overlapping a little to give a sense of continuity.
